Title: Manta-Ray Ship [Space Invaders-ish/Galaga project]
Post by: Sinistral Erim on October 13, 2009, 02:55:46 pm
I'm not good at machines. First attempt that looks somewhat right... and yes, mirrored.

EDIT: added an explosion and another ship. I'm using a palette of 18 colors that I would like to cut to 16.
EDIT2: added enemy ship & mockup time.
EDIT3: Added the WIP window borders & stuff. I had no idea about how to do techy stuff so I went to look at old 8-bit games, and according to R-type, squares and circles connected with lotsa wires and pipeage = techy. Yay.

Explonsions don't collapses in a sort of black hole.
You should have the smoke fly around in a centrifugal motion.

Explosion timing is a bit weird. Seems to take a long time to appear, and not long enough to disappear. Sometimes I make them doughnut shaped so they don't sort of change direction. I've made a quick example of this technique for you:

Hope that helps! The ships don't look bad - being mirrored is all that I don't like about the blue one, the one with red is a little flat in comparison.

I changed the barrel around to look more 3D to go along with the perspective of the rest of the ship.
I suck at explaining so please just look at what I did.

I very rarely seem to do anything like 'spaceships' etc so I thought I'd have a closer look and play with yours - keeping the same design (well.. adjusted slightly) and same palette (though in Z-2 I altered the colours slightly)

My aim really was to try and add some solidity to the ship instead of it seeming like a wafer thin and flimsy looking ship (especially as the player would want to feel powerful in it) However, in playing around with the shading etc I think I have altered the viewing angle too much. Still.. it was mostly a self-test to fill a few spare moments, but thought I'd share my results with you in case in gave you some ideas or whatever.

This is very cool - but I do miss the shinyness of the dome!

I think you should add planets to the background universe to give a specific lightsource on the spaceship... :)
not always but yeah... ^^

Had another try at my wafer-ship (now teapotship?). Eh, I still messed up the shading in the wings -- Zoggles excellent edit is way better.
