HEXQUISITE CORPSE COLLAB
The Field
(http://pixelation.org/upload/hexquisite/hexquisite_final.gif)
Progress animation will be added sometime later when I will find time do do it.
The Rules:
Claiming:
- Only green tiles can be claimed. Always write the number as the first thing in your post. First come first served. You can only claim one tile at a point.
- A tile being green does not mean it has not already been claimed. Please always check the posts of the people before you.
- Red tiles have been claimed and are being worked one (hopefully).
- After claiming a tile it has to be done within 72 hours of the claim post. Failure to do so leads to freeing of said tile. Complaining won't get it back. Tough cookie.
- You can not claim a tile which is adjacent to one you made earlier.
- Finished tiles are PMed to me, ptoing (http://pixelation.org/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=79), NOT posted!
- When you pm'ed me your finished tile, update your initial post with a DONE!, for the record
- DO NOT post your tile anywhere else for CC or after it is done (like on PJ for example). The point is that no one sees it until all tiles are done.
- Of course the whole point is to use the little bits of what you see from the finished adjacent tiles as a starting point for your tile.
- There is no set perspective. As long as you line your work up with the adjacent tiles all is well. Go wild.
- Only use the 16 colours in the palette provided in the top left (the first 16 indexes in the palette). Make sure you do not use other colours. This happened in the iso collab and it was annoying to run after people
- I then will put a masked version of the tile into the field (as shown in the image below).
- FUN!
-
Just to make it clear, the green tiles are the only ones which are claimable atm.
-
Alrighty then, I'll claim tile 16. DONE!
Is this a top down view of a world (like in Settlers) or can the graphs be anything, lacking any angle?
-
No set perspective. Updated rules.
-
Do you need to use all the colours?
All 16 i mean in your picture.
-
No.
-
I claim #1. Therefore, I win.
DONE
-
Number 26 please ;]
DONE!
-
Sounds cool, I'll take 6! ;D
DONE!
-
11 be mine.
DONE!
-
I call #21 :D
DONE!

Ptoing, you come across Start A Story (http://startastory.com/) yet? This collab reminds me of it. Love the hex idea. I take it the name is based on this term (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exquisite_corpse). I didn't get it at first. At first I thought the collab had a holloween of horror theme, etc, but no. I take it there is no theme, this is totally open-ended.
So, this is designed so that only you get to see the picture as it's put together? The surprise will be massive once it's all done, can't wait! You've created a lot of anticipation - something the ISO collab lacked. It was almost dreary to watch that unfold because it starting taking so long and it got old, but this is idea addresses that well.
**. . . ok, I just now understood how you're handling letting artists know what the tiles adjacent to the one their working on look like - by masking the inside with a black hexagon. This will enable others to design tiles that seamlessly match the adjacent ones, but only technically, the content will be totally random. For instance, I'm almost posotive I know what your masked tile is, and so I may draw my adjacent tile, if I claimed it, to continue your drawing as best as possible, whereas someone else might interpret your masked tile, trying to deduce what's there by using the pixels visible, completely differently and therefore end up drawing something different and "wrong".
It's more work, but what if you sent artists that claimed a tile, only the completed adjacent tiles so they knew for a fact what was adjacent? I guess this would be a totally different approach. But I think I'd prefer it. If I was doing tiles.
Though, for people to not know what's really there will get some really crazy and random results, and I think that's probably what you're going for. Just throwing that out there.
I'm a little repelled by the C64 palette (I'm kinda of sick of it and wish to grow my pixel art skillz in other ways) but I still may try and get a few tiles. Thanks for taking the time to put this collab together.
-
Yes, the name is a play on the Exquisite Corpse game. Which had a high random result, hence the blackening out of the tiles. It is fully intended that the result will be totally random.
Also, I know, the C64 palette is getting old (pun not intended), and next time I will take the effort to make a custom palette.
-
Great collab, I guess I was a bit slow though =[ Could I preorder a tile?
If so I'll take 31. NO
But I have to agree with Mathias about the c64 palette...I look forward to the next collab with a custom Ptoing palette. ;D
-
Me gustaria 2 :D
Damn time zones.. I can't be the first to post. Should be done soon. Unless I should wait until number one is posted? ???
Read the rules again, THANKS!
-
I hope you guys choose side-panels after this is done so more tiles will be claimable. (Common, show a little love.) If you choose the ones in the middle, the other 2 next to it won't be claimable until they're done. Just saying.
On another note, this seems like it's going to turn out awesome.
-
I'm not seeign a theme or anything like that, so I guess this is completely open and upto the first tiles to set a mood and perspective. Interesting. Where does the corpse in the collab title play into this?
Probably a good idea to start off with a preset palette this time. I bet we'll still have a problem with people muckign it up though, hahah.
-
Don't know if you'll be able to determine a mood and perspective only by seeing a few pixels width 'border' of each tile. You won't be seeing much of any tile until the thing is fully complete.
-
I think half of the point is there will be no theme, and that (hopefully) other peoples tiles will be misread, and lead to some kind of really mismatched piece. The most interesting thing could well be the way that all the tiles will lead into each other, regardless of what the edge was supposed to be. I guess I'm saying, maybe it would be better if you didn't try to integrate your tile into the opposing ones, but the opposing into yours, if that makes any sense :-\.
-
calling #20. wouldn't mind seeing border of 21 but I guess it's not too important
Read the rules!
-
Originally it was a game with words invented by the french Surrealists afaik. Where someone would write the first word of a sentence, the next the 2nd and so on after a certain structure.
The beginning of the first sentence translates to "The exquisite corpse..." Hence the name.
-
Now you got me a bit confused with the rules here
You can't claim adjacent tiles
But after all 6 start tiles are done you can
Does this mean I can pick any tile not adjacent to another or do I have to wait for the start tiles to finish to pick another tile than the green ones?
Edit: Thanks for clarifying :)
-
Once I have all 6 start tiles I will upload a new image with them in place but masked so that only the borders are visible.
Then anyone who wants to can claim an adjacent tile, first come first served.
But as long as a tile is claimed but not finished (and the image updated by me) you can not claim a tile that is adjacent to it as that would create a break.
Freefloating tiles which are not adjacent to anything done can not be claimed.
This is why I want people to really look at the post of the other people and then think a bit before they might claim stuff that is either already claimed or unclaimable due to the rules.
-
Hi ptoing,
unless I'm overlooking something, here's a little suggestion to save you lots of headaches.
Since you committed to update the reference picture whenever required, while at it, you could just paint the newly claimable tiles in green so that the claiming rules could be restricted to these:
1. Only green tiles can be claimed.
2. Requests are satisfied on a first-come-first-served basis.
3. You can not claim a tile which is adjacent to one you made earlier.
4. After claiming a tile it has to be done within 72 hours of the claim post. Failure to do so leads to freeing of said tile. Complaining won't get it back. Tough cookie.
The only disadvantages are that:
* we aren't told expressly the policy applied to select the claimable tiles;
* theorethically, we can't make predictions about claimable tiles based on the "DONE" messages by others.
Sorry for adding meta-discussion to the thread, but I thought that this could make everybody's (and especially yours) life easier.

The problem is still that also tiles can not be claimed if a tile next to it is claimed but not posted yet.
So if i make all 3 possibly claimable tiles next to the starting ones green once I post them, that does not mean all 3 tiles are claimable.
In all cases the people claiming tiles will have to read what others wrote before them to check which tiles are currently claimed.
This also means there is a way for a bit of chaos to creep into this unless people use their brains a tiny bit and just make the effort to read what people claimed and then think which tiles are claimable. Actually I have an idea, but I don't know whether I can get it done.
Anyway, I just hope people will think a bit and have fun, that's all I want.

Managing the tiles internally allows you to choose freely, which means you are not forced to make all tiles adjacent to the complete ones claimable. F.ex., when tile #1 is done you can make available just the tile #31.
In short, give us a black box which exposes to us only the fact that we can claim green tiles. What happens inside the box is entirely up to you ;) I believe this would really avoid lots of mess.
saimo
-
Err and how about tile assigning? Because as far as I can tell all green tiles are now claimed, and since the borders haven't been filled in yet, I don't know which to claim? Is 'just give me one' too lazy?
-
Reread the rules. Don't claim things until the borders of the green tiles are posted, which won't happen until they're all finished. You can only choose adjacent tiles of the finished ones. "First come first serve."
-
Ha, Saimo, that actually sounds like a really good idea :D Should save me a lot of trouble indeed :B

It's actually turning out okay, though I actually did feel nervous. This is fun! C64 is awesome.
EDIT:
Oh, poop. I just realized I'm working off of Ptoings tile. o.o Sorry if I misinterpret it, Ptoing. :y: :D

Oh, poop. I just realized I'm working off of Ptoings tile. o.o Sorry if I misinterpret it, Ptoing. :y: :D
It's okay if you misinterpret, it's going to be hard not to, anyway. I think the point of this is to have something that is random and crazy, and does not exactly fit together.
But in the end, I think the wackiness will all work together and make something pleasant.
-
(3) done!
-
I claim 43.
Scratch that, I have to wait until 15 is done
-
As far as I can tell, 7 is not taken. I'd love to have a go at this, so if you don't mind, I'll take it. I'm a bit of an amateur though, are there any entry level requirements for this? ???
Unless I hear otherwise I'll assume I can proceed. :)
EDIT: Did I really only have one post? Hm. Did post counts get lost when it changed from purple pixelation way back when? Oh well.
EDIT2: Done!
-
Sure you can have 7. I marked it red, assuming you will do it :)
The blue/purple pixelation got hacked back in 2004 and all the database stuff from then got lost.

I claim 39 and win again, this time for no obvious reason!
DONE

You win because you're next to Ptoing's and my tile. :y: :D
EDIT:
31 please, if it's not too soon after 10. ;D Actually nvm. I don't really have enough time for that now. Also looks kind of hard. :blind:

Just finished my first tile (nr 3).
I'm not sure how different programs sort the palette brightness-wise (photoshop is different from promotion afaik), but the current palette is not correct sorted according to ProMotion 5.1. Maybe PM 6 uses a slightly different algorithmus, tho.
-
For some reason the purple and orange were switched around in the palette as far as brightness order goes. no clue why.

hey, just one though.. with the number of occupied tiles growing, it might get a bit timeconsuming to find out who is working where and who your neightbours are - signing the covered tiles would have been a good idea..
anyway, i went the extra-mile and made something like this for me. maybe someone else wants to be in the know =)

Nice looking tile, ilkke.

I decided to mask ilkke's tile again and really wait until the end to unveil everything :B
Due to input from several sides I came to the conclusion it would be more fun that way :)

I'm really curious to see how people that get bridge tiles - tiles in between already developed clusters, are resolving the differences and connecting the clusters together, such as was necessary with number 4.
(it would be helpful if the masked-off finished tiles still had their number visible. As more get covered up it becomes a greater chore to determine what each tile's number is)
*EDIT Oh geeze, duh, ptoing just put the names "layer" above everything in his master composite hexquisite file. I guess nobody thought of that until now. Tomic, I guess yer guide pic is obsolete now.

That definitely deserves the Worst Transition Award.
The real collaborative skill in this is seamless transitions. I especially appreciate ones where even the anti-aliasing style of an artist is carried over into another artist's tile, even if it differs from his, just to make a smooth transition.

There needs to at least remain a guide we can refer to, to know who did what. Preferrably, at the end of this, ptoing puts up an animated "progress WIP" of the whole thing so we can see what order the tiles were done in. It matters, because then we know what each tile's author had to work with. Tiles totally surrounded by already-complete tiles will be particularly demanding and I think it's important we know who based theirs off of what.
-
Yah, there will be a image of the finished unveiled thing and at least an animation (probably veiled) of the steps.

umm, 82 doesn't blend with any of the other tiles? Sorry to be rude, Lollige, but I just don't see it. Might snag a last tile. :D
Actually, 69 was done first, then 83, then Lollige's 82. So most adjacent tiles weren't done yet. Just check the previous versions, they're all right there.
So both of my tiles next to his don't seam real well, but it was very difficult to rectify the differences of tiles around both of those that I did. I actually focused more on pixel tech than really meshing perfectly with the scene, although my tiles should be decently blended once this thing gets totally revealed, can't wait. Somehow I learned a lot about the C64 pal doing my 3 tiles. I'll now refocus on my developing game (http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=7814.0) and apply that learning to it's GFX. I guess this collab demanded a different approach, using the C64 pal, than I'd been faced with before. And hey, my pixels got fused with some great pixellers here; everybody wins.

It was good fun, I learnt a lot too. Mostly about implied colour. This pallette forced me to do things I wouldn't try normally. Just hope nobody hates me for my efforts! :p

hey, I just noticed something. Ptoing, which tile are you going to make green next and why?
-

79 (again) probably. deadline+1
-
Indeed. I see what you mean, the match is hard to find on 82 vs 81, but mine was there first ;)
Hehe, yup, well I had a hard time interpreting the edges of 82 as anything other than the fringes of an abstract swirl of pixels, it has an obvious clockwise motion to it. So, my 90 came out pretty realistic, but my 81 more abstracted, though I was up until 5:30am rushing to get it done, constantly checking here to make sure my time hadn't ran out. Technically it's not even finished, but I had to get it turned in, it'll work.

Hahaha, I see what you mean now!
But thats all just done by accident, the image is by far not a swirl!
-
there is a free tile.
-
Ah fine, one more. 63!
Edit: oh and I will do it very fast! Happy?
-
Do it well.
-
It's great. Just not sure yet what to do with the green thing. Spaceship? Large fish? Alien rain cloud?
-

Bwahahaha har, wouldn't you like to know
-
Bwahahaha har, wouldn't you like to know
Or I might turn it into an island that will turn out to be attached to something part fish, part spaceship.
-
Oh, Ptoing. When I claimed 89 there was a gray line where 89 and 82 met, so I worked with it. Now you've removed it, it no longer blends as well. It might have been a mistake, but would you mind putting it back?

What gray line?
You mean that dotted line of black pixels? I doubt that they 'blend' into anything. Must be som eother gray line that I don't see?
-

Eh, I'm pretty certain ptoing isn't editing tiles at random. Looking back at previous versions I see no such grey line, Masna.
EDIT* oh I guess ilkke found it.
Bwahahaha har, wouldn't you like to know

do a unicorn. double-dog dare.
-
Yeah it did get removed when he colored the tile red for Masna. I remember it being there because I was thinking "What the heck would I do with that" when I first thought of claiming it. Should go back imo, since that's what was there when Masna started working on it as well as since when Lolige placed his tile.
-
That grey stuff was my fault, no clue how it happened.
-
can I have 78? ;D
-
*explodes*
The suspense is killing me! It just looks so.... epic!

Indeed! What surprises me the most is the participant roster, there was a great turn-out for this. Some real talent in it.
-
I don't envy whoever gets that last tile... looks hard :hehe:
-
*gets ready to pounce* >:3
-
DONE!
-
DONE!
Are you sure?
-
DONE!
Are you sure?
I'm with Mathias on this, there sure was some selective blending going on with your tile. Even with the accidental black pixels that were removed from Lollige's tile that wouldn't mesh. *tsk tsk*
-
Yeah, I guess I'll remove all of that. The only reason that blackis-gray part is there is because it blended with the black line. But sure, I'll go in and butcher it up again. I admit though, that the blue blob doesn't really blend, either. On it now, though.
-
wtf masna, 5 out of your tile's 6 sides have clashes. :mean:
guys, don't screw up the whole thing in the final moments, please. it was too much fun.
-
I know, I know! I'm sorry. :'(
It should be done soon. And it blends MUCH better now.
EDIT: DONE!
-
blarg, I have to attend to a different project :'(
78 is free
-
78 I snatch. c:
-
79 Please
If it is free. It looks like infinity had it but ran out of time. Hopefully I didn't miss out on this, it'd be sad.
-
Gotta wait for 78 before 79 can be jumped on now that it's become free and claimed AGAIN. These tiles are cursed, somebody for the love of god, please finish what you claim! haha
-
It should be done soon. And it blends MUCH better now.
blends better. dunno about "MUCH better" though, but meh, i don't wanna be the guy bitching around
anyway guys,
just asking cause i'm generally interested in ppls modus opperandi (also concerning older projects like the isocollab):
do you (A) think about possible executions of a tile prior to claiming it or do you (B) just claim it and try to improvise with the option of giving it back or start some trade?
i'm type A
-
yeah, i submitted my tile a day too late.
i'm a jerk.
i'm really excited to see this finished though.
when it's all said and done, maybe i can throw mine up here for all to see.

well, why wouldn't you be? I know for me, the hardest part of anything is the beginning ;), and with something like this, it's already done. sweet.
-

For 2 of my tiles it was A. But for my other two it was mostly B, except without the option of giving it back or trading for the purpose of challenging myself further.

I hate to be negative too, but there's no excuse for such poor blending. This is just a community collaboration, and meant to be fun, but that doesn't mean you can just slap down some quick crap just to be a part of it, c'mon. I tried to treat this very seriously. Still though, I'm glad so many different people particpated. Including Masna. He'll only improve.
As for your survey, which I'm really curious about too, I'm a mix, yet I never considered admitting failure and reliquishing the tile, I forced myself to stick with it -
--(A) #31's concept idea jumped out at me instantly and I knew I had to do it, I couldn't and didn't want to do anything else. And that was before ilkke's #1 got revealed. I think it'll make good sense once revealed, like a wierd continuation of ilkke's character above.
--(B) #90 was a battle to figure out. #'s 85, 83 and 82 where there already; dark on one side, light on the other. I wanted to hurt JJ Naas for that gradient! haha, in the end it worked out, but I think I cheaped out with how I married the light and dark areas. Very curious to see Tocky's interpretation although it already looks he completely violated my main subject matter haha, but hey that's what it's all about, man. Violating others' art, right? ehrrrr
--(B all the way) #81, uhggg, no joke I spent hours just trying to figure this one out. By that I mean figure out what to do with it, not figure out what was actually in the neighboring tiles, you really can't. And in the end what I submitted is cliché garbage, as well as rushed and unfinished due to deadline -BUT- I feel that my pixel tech imrpoved quite a bit so I'm still happy.
Then I'm also curious if anyone cheated and PM'ed they're tiles to buddies so they could design with continuity, not an acqusation, just a wonder, hehe. I didn't do it, it would decrease the spontaneity, the essence of 'exsquisite corpse' activities.
-
(B) for mine (mainly cus i wanted to be next to Reo), although as i was looking for others to pick (none of which i actually had the guts to pick in the end) it would have been (A).
Being the last tile 79 has a very pleasing placement, don'tchya think? :)
-
78 complete
chiming in:
i had no plan whatsoever
guess we'll be able to see who's which type when all is revealed hohoho~!
-
79 for me please!
DONE!
-
ohboyohboyohboy :D
-
55 minutes, ndchristie!
Pleeeeaaaase say you're just finalizing your post to PM ptoing! ;D Yes?
-
76 is free again, argh. This will never be finished D:
-
I claim #76! DONE!
-
c'mon you pansies, push those pixels! hyaah hyaaahhh
-
aahhhhh!!!!!!!
if Mirre dont take it... i will!!! :P
i claim the 76 just in case (im on the waitlist)
... All our operators are busy, please keep waiting ...
edit ptoing: no such thing as waitlists :n:>:(
edit ui: jajajajajaja .... i said IN CASE and then i made a ""joke"", like i wasnt really serious  just clarification in case ppl see me like a dump or asshole
-
this is painful

i'm a jerk.
i'm really excited to see this finished though.
when it's all said and done, maybe i can throw mine up here for all to see.
Please do, it will be fun to see what you made out of the tile!
-
So is 76 taken?
-
yes
-
c'mon percival, mirre.
don't tell me you needa make use of the full 72 hours to finish this. :'(
-
I've found that a watched egg never boils. NEVER D:
Wouldn't y'all be much happier not waiting around impatiently?
-
If again one of the tiles fails, how about this:
The fastest tile maker gets it, not the fastest claimer? Which means, in order to claim it, you must send the finished tile to Ptoing? Yes, that might result in you working on the tile and then someone else finishing it a bit quicker, but it solves the current problem.
-

NO.

not to be rude, but sounds like a meritocracy, which ptoing possibly deliberately but either way managed to avoid throughout.
-

Rather the opposite, people who care less about finishedness would be submitting halfarsed hexes instead of doing any finer work (as much as that is possible with the palette & dimensions, anyway...) on it, with such rule.
-
A) This is not a competition for who gets the most tiles the fastest.
B) No.
-
Almost done now, go Mirre :)
-
Almost done, but finding it a bit hard to unify the four types of sky in the adjacent tiles... :blind: Please start with the middle in the next HCC!
-
I claim #76! DONE!
That post will echo an eternity! Now all we need is a ptoing to save the day. :B
Oh, and maybe I'm just overly observant (or unobservant if this has been pointed out elsewhere on the boards) or my browser is broken, but do you have some sort of script on your site where your avatar is hosted, ptoing? I've noticed that whenever you are not online, Memory bot doesn't bounce. Does your site monitor your pixelation online status? Are you overly OCD and swap out avatar GIFs whenever you go to bed in that directory?
-
I claim #76! DONE!
Whoa, 12:22:22, that's one number combination you managed to post at.
And ptoing's avvy always seems to bounce for me.
Anyways, I'm really excited to see it unveiled.
-
Wow, that one finished quickly! I hopped on earlier today thinking I'd have time for one and there weren't any left.
Looks incredible so far.

Pretty sure thats just you, it bounces constantly here.
-
It's worth noting that the bounce speed of ptoing's avatar is significantly different in different browsers. Opera plays the animation much faster than Chrome, for whatever reason. I'm not sure which of the two speeds is correct, if either.
I'm so looking forward to seeing this. ;D
-
That was fast, Mirre. :y:
F5, F5, F5... I bet it's gonna be awesome. Know any relevant C64 sites we should alert, so they can admire the C64 palette awesomeness as well?
-
That's an acid trip if ever I saw one.
-
Awesome!! I really liked! Congrats to all how could make the tiles!!! ;D
-
:awesome:
edit: I'm thinking about printing a nice poster sized copy of this out. does anyone have a reference for c64->cmyk conversion? these colours are all pretty desaturated anyway but I'm not sure how to go about getting the contrast right.
-
Wow, some of the transitions work really well and it's hard to tell where one tile ends and the next one begins. Good work everybody!
-

I totally agree! It's surprisingly great. Well done.
-
Wow, that's crazy cool. Well done everyone!
(Damn, my tile looks ridiculously bad next to most of those...)
-
awesomly awesome.
took me 30 minutes to stop looking at it and restart working again (we've got a deadline here today!)
sorry to philliptr for the bad transition with the blocks btw.
-
Haha, this is so awesome! Great effort and creativity everyone! There's so much great stuff to look at here, but I especially like Peach's little austronauts + Larwick's cans, JJ Naas' girl whose hair turns into spaghetti in big brother's tile at the bottom there, ilkke/huZba's robot and Perciv@l's monsters.
-
Incredible!
You just keep on finding more and more cool stuff!
:D
-
Bestestestest collab evar!
Now a new one :D
-
Wow! What a collab!! I especially love JJ Naas's pic of the girl at the bottom - it looks like she's thinking everything! X) Totally FANTASTIC. Well done everyone!
-
Glad this came out so cool and everyone had fun. If all goes well I will start a new one next month :)
-
I can't stop looking at it, so much detail, and I keep finding more. This is one of those things where you can't prevent yer eyes from bouncing around randomly, too much crazy visual interest everywhere; no priority but it's wonderful.
Sure there's a few tragically non-descript tiles but the really good ones more than make up for the imbalance. Some transitions are nicely surreal.
This was well worth it. I look forward to the next one, but I hope it's different somehow. Different palette definitely, although as it turned out the C64 pal looks great here!
I'm really impressed with the pixel tech effort put forth by tomic and big b, and others of course. I've learned alot from this.
-
Wow, this came out really great! Well done everyone! :y:
-
Holy shit, this is beautiful! I've made this my desktop wallpaper. I can't find any of my icons, but I don't care ;D
-
GREAT!
I love it
it's a nice trip to look at!
again ! another one !
-
It's awesome. Good work. My favourite bits are tomic's Ocean Liner, big brother's spaghetti hex, especially the hands and the glass and Mathias' Sphinks has some very smooth handling of the C64 palette.
-
pffffff man this looks AWESOME!!! :DDDDDDDD
the next one just 1 squere/hex for each person plz :DDD so let moar ppl join with a different style.
Tomic, that giraffe is really ROX!!! i love it :DDD
Ilkke, what about that dig/ass head at top! jajajajaj THE KING!!!
Arachne, those guys looks perfect in that specific parT :P
Argyle... WTF??? jajajajajajajajaj that fat mustache guy!! juasjuajajaja
Robotriot and Mirre.... AWESOME PART jajajaa it fix perfect
ptoing... jajaja what's that??? i have like 3 minutes trying to understand what kind of MONSTER is! he looks like he smooking a joint! and the ghost beside is saying... GIVE ME GIVE ME!!!
all that space part an bottom just rules
THX TO ALL FOR PARTICIPE!!!! I JUST LOVE IT!!!!!!
i will print a poster of this!
PTOING, thx for let it us participe :D and for this great idea and collab :D.... I WANT MOARR :ddd
-
I was thinking of doing the same when I get a chance to refill my cartridges - print out a blown up version of tile sections and lay them out as a wall hanging.
Words cannot describe how well this turned out. I just love them all. ilkke's creatures are all just so silly and fun, Mathias has reinvented the obsurd notion of what my mind pictured under his tile masks, Arachne went places with Snoopy's head I never could have dreamed could happen; This would just be a big post if I let it become one but wow. Deliciously excellent!
Argyle... WTF??? jajajajajajajajaj that fat mustache guy!! juasjuajajaja
:P The absolute weirdest part to me is that I claimed that tile specifically because the first thing I saw in the definition of robotriot's rocky edge was the outline of a fat belly, a mangled but extended arm with wrist bent, and a boob. It all fell together that way in my head oddly enough.
Running out the door to head home for the day but I had to say something. This was just so much fun and I really learned a lot. MORE!
-

Haha, this is also one of my favorite parts. Very imaginative :D
Among my other favorites are Arachne's retroish scifi scene, tomic's ship, big brother's spaghetti dish, ilkke's animal in #91 and the monsters in the sports arena by Perciv@l. But really, there are so many great areas and tiles by everyone, your eyes just keep jumping around from point of interest to point of interest.
-

I'm honored, JJ. Thanks!
-
I have to give you more props Mathias, you perhaps created some of my favorite pieces in the collab, your mastery of the palette is astounding. Just look at that skull, that AA is amazing, beautiful work.
-
I'm throwing together a WIP animation of the grid if that's ok. I'm just revealing the grid in the order in which it happened from start to finish based on each of the sequential images that you have archived in the image database. I will probably just be showing the images unmasked without names, nothing flashy.
-

Thanks, bro!!
With a new Hex collab on the way, all interested in participating need to go make their voices heard, over at the Hexquisite Corpse Suggestion Thread, (http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=8629.0) so it can be set up in a way everyone can enjoy contributing to the most, within reason of course (can't please everyone).
I'm hoping we at least put a new spin on this, one way or the other.
-
OMFG
I'm not one of the people to sit there, continuing to refresh browsers waiting for the image to be unveiled, but even as a latecomer (relatively) I'm god damn amazed!
IT KICKS ASS. I honestly was not expecting this good of a turnout. It's like post-modern art but awesome and c64y. I freaking love it, this is going on my facebook. Also this is the first time I've been motivated to save anything to my hard drive, challenge wise.

WIP animation constructed!
Each step is in 2 second steps, and it hangs at the final frame for 20 seconds and loops forevah!
Just pop it into your animation program if you wish to view each frame of the animation at your own pausable pace. If I were a greater man and didn't have a baby that enjoyed banging on my keyboard when I do stuff with her on my lap I would have considered scripting up a flash applet with mouseovers et cetera but this is more than enough haha.
Hyperlinked to it instead of posting it up so that it wouldn't be halfway through the frame loop by the time people scrolled down to it in the thread.

Very nice to view it like that.
However, tile 21 is moved down one pixel :P
-
I was skeptic at how well this was going to flow, but wow.
Also, I really like how the bottom-most tile is the girl, and everything seems to be flowing out of her head -- like they're all her ideas and such.
I think this is just going to be another one of those things from Pixelation that end up floating around the internet.
-

Great way for JJ naas to steal the thunder - I bet he knew what he was doing, too XD
I tease. That's one of my favorites. I love how BB turned her hair into a meal!
-
Thanks all for the comments about the girl. The hair flowing out of the hex wasn't what I initially started working on, I did her on a profile at first but figured after a while that it sort of just had to be that way.
The advantages of being the first to grab a hex. ;)
-
HOLY BALLS! :o That's more than awesome! Congratulations!
Pity I missed this one. . . :(
-
=D ptoing is a fuckin genius...hexagons are an excellent shape for an exquisite corpse ;D
-
awesomly awesome.

sorry to philliptr for the bad transition with the blocks btw.
Didn't give you much to blend with and your tile turned out awesome, so no hard feelings here ;)
-
as an innocent bystander I'd like to say I think the transition fits rather well with the blockyness..... :D
This is a very beautiful thing, I really like how by just giving everyone their space and letting them mesh with everybody else everything turned out soooo pretty. Like a little anarchic miracle or something =) it's really beautiful and I HAVE to be in the next one :o
The fact I just watched Synecdoche new york probably fuels my optimism here...but I really belive what I just said =)
I wonder if we could make one of these to tell a story...?
-
Looks great in print. Bit of a pain to trim, though!
It's about 35" (90cm) tall. Thanks for the great decoration, everyone.
*EDIT - changed "pixelation.net" to "pixelation"
-
:o that is incredible!!!! :yay:
And I thought I was clever for making it my desktop
EDIT: One thing I learnt from the HexCorpse collab......dont try to fit in :p I mean seriously in the ISO one we were all aware of what eachother was doing and tried to make things fit....the outcome was less creative in its use of color and everything (not to mention some overly obsessive individuals who dragged it on forever cause of tryin to force a plot on it :p )....here everyone did their thing only worryin about transitions and I even came to like the C64 pallete :D I wonder what an ISO collab would be like if the tiles were obscured
-
I always thought pixels looked very pretty when printed. A nice thing to have indeed! :yay:
-
That print looks totally awesome.
I say this collaboration is by far the most successful. And now I feel really lazy for only doing one tile :-[.
Well, there probably comes a next chance.
-
Every time I come to this thread, I become inspired and motivated.
-
Wow, astonishing work. Accolades to all those involved.
-
Awesome poster, Matt :)
An obscured isometric challenge sounds like it'll be crazy at screwing with perspective.
-
This was a great collaboration. That printed version is the tits. Good work, everyone.

How did you print it, anyway? Plain paper mounted on some thicker board material? Cardstock? In segments pasted together? It looks great, I was planning on doing the same if I had any damned tonor for the printer :'(
Oh, and it'd be wayofthepixel.net, not pixelation.net.
-
That's funny, I wasn't going to add ".net" to "pixelation" at first but ended up doing so anyway, but forgot to change it to the correct URL. I'll correct it Monday.
Printed on an HP designjet 5500, a wide-format printer which prints on a 42" (107cm) wide roll. Works great.
-
Looks great mathias. I sent mine to a print shop but it still came out looking dull and greenish??
-
I hate printers that can't print. I hope you didn't pay for it. C64 pal is very printer friendly. Every color is pretty much within any professional printer's gamut except maybe the bright green, but it's not that bad.
-
Congrats on all artists. That's a nice print too!
-
Holy krap, I just noticed 86 is that infuriating Thrustburst game. STUPID GAME
