Title: RAMPAGE!! >:@
Post by: Chris2balls on November 16, 2008, 02:38:36 pm
Hello!
I'm making a Rampage engine in SDL (I'm not programming, I'm only spriting), which will be a cross between Rampage and Rampage World Tour.
Here is a sheet with all my work for now:

I'm trying to keep a cartoony feel to the game, and I've added a character of my own design... the hamster. I don't know if Ralph should be grey or blue (I'd go for blue). I'm not sure if I should make animations fluid or keep the blockiness of the original (2-3 frames). I've made most items, and projectiles, but I've still got to do people, soldiers, and more vehicles. Talking of which my car looks strange, but I think that's due to perspective. I tried to set a light source hitting the characters from the right, but I don't know how consistent my lightsource is. Thank you for C+C! Ideas and suggestions are very much appreciated!

First thing that really stands to me is the car.

Looks like you took a 2d view and added an overhead view. Not only does it look wrong, it does not fit with everything else.

I completely agree with you :D... that must be my 3rd try, and the perspective's... wrong.
I also tried to get the same angle as in the first, but I did not manage. For instance the helicopter's tilted very, very slightly. And my car... well I'll fiddle around with it. Thanks :)
Edit: I've also carried on George's looking up. I'll send a pic after I've corrected the car.

I think you can get away with having just a straight side view of the car, maybe you could have a slight tilt.

Okay. I've restarted from scratch.

Yeah dude in a perspective like the buildings, you wouldnt see the roof of the car. Just a side view of it, just like you don't see the roof of the buildings.

Mmmmh... Okay.
This means the road will need to be flat.
What about the style of the characters? Do you agree with my stylistic approach? Or is there something you think I could incorporate or change?
Thanks!

Maybe it's a bit too far along, but I always thought it'd be cool if the different rampage character had different hitboxes. One character could be taller than average, another might be smaller than avg. You could even design the maps to allow new way to doing the level if you're small enough to fit through certain crawlspaces. Kinda like only tiny mario can fit through certain crawlspaces in the early marios. I've always though it was a shame to have all these different characters that in the end are little more than skin swaps of a single character

Also, don't think that because it's a rampage game you have to be 100% true to the original. Don't be afraid to put your own personal stamp on it and evolve the concept.

i'm a bit uncomfortable with how you did all the monsters on the same template (the gorilla, obviously), while i'd have expected some of them (obviously the hamster) to have different proportions.

That's a great idea, crab2selout.png. :D
The only thing is that this is going to be a clone, on only one level, with a level editor... but with this level editor and unique characters you could make awesome levels! So I'm going to seriously consider that :)
->PypeBros: what do you mean by different proportions? Head/body scale, amount of fat, limb length?... I actually found what I did with the hamster quite funny <:(, but I'll see what I can do.

Yes, you have to remember this is an engine for now, and my deadline's the 11th December...
Thanks! Looking forward for more of your opinion and advice from all of you :D

both limb and body length, mainly. I mean, a hamster which stands with a hand touching the ground is imho a gorilla who put a hamster's mask on. (no offense intended).

As i scan the 4 characters, i could initially not tell that zilla and werewolf used the gorilla template (though changing sizes might be a good idea there too), the hamster just couldn't sound right and revealed the truth for both 4 guys: re-colored gorillaz with another head.

I know of deadlines, engines restrictions and so on, but what about making the hamster actually have the shape of a hamster, the zilla having a larger tail (to keep balance) and maybe have each character having its favourite attack (zilla might give tail shots rather than punching, etc). That would make the game more interesting as the alternate characters would mean a (slightly) different gaming experience. Think of it as how flat Street Fighter would be if all characters had the same abilities.

(just 2 cents)
