Post by: Opacus on December 22, 2008, 07:00:56 pm
Here he is, revealed the number one Espada in Aizen's army:

Stark
I just had to make a pixel art of him.
Here's my references:
http://nekodan.wordpress.com/2008/12/19/bleach-manga-339-primera-espada/
http://meroko.freeblog.hu/files/stark.jpg

15 colours right now, don't plan on using more then 16.
I'm going for a painting-like look.
Critique very welcome.

Thanks :)
I think it's pretty much finished?

Why make his face so smooth? He looks like a manly man to me, which means a lot less baby but gradual shading and much more angular face planes. Good otherwise.

Colours look a bit washed too me, a quick go at changing the palette, I got rid of 2 colours too seemed a bit unecissery.  :P

Don't think you're done yet, make full use of your palette, atm some places are lacking that level of AAing because you're forgetting some colours you've used elsewhere. Did some quick alterations to places that stood out to me.

Don't know if it's too contrasting in your opinion but the lightest shade is pretty much white, and I don't feel your colours are giving it enough shape.

Yeah the contrast could definitely be upped a bit. I think you should try and see if Tite Kubo has any marker renderings of this dude, that would give you a much better reference than these black and white's. Heres a quick edit of what I was saying:

I'm with ryumaru's edit! More definition on the nose, with the more realistic shading you've got going on the anime-small nose totally takes away from his steamy manly beauty appearance.

With so many different shading hues, be extra careful with the shape of every shading "blotch" and their relationship to each other.

Oh, and I'm digging it (: Should get around to reading some more bleach, seems like a good shounen manga to keep track of when you like SWORDS and OVER NINE THOUSAND power-level plotlines (which I do, it's like candy; not a lot of substance but oh so good.)

Damn Jad, you have never made a single post that didn't make me atleast giggle.
I'm not to sure about the whole manly rough thing, but on the other hand I did make the shading realistic.
It's hard :(
Thanks for the edits and crits. Atleast I did up the contrast and make his nose a bit bigger (I'll define it more tomorrow, for now I must sleep)

There are some coloured pictures of him, but non of them have more distinctive facial features then my picture does.
I don't really think he is intended to have a very manly face, mainly because he's really lazy.

I like the newest version, but the eyebrows seem a bit wonky ::)

Since when did manly and lazy NOT equate? :3

Refering to yourself there? :P

Yeah well they do, but it's just it doesn't fit the character. I think I caught him quite well as it is.
As much as your edit makes more sense then mine, it's just not Stark.

Reo: Glad you like it, I'll fix the brows tomorrow.

Edit: (http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/6421/stark10uy6.gif)
There it is. I think it's done? I AA'ed as many parts as I could still find. I made his nose slightly larger, and hopefully I fixed the eyebrows.

The eyes and the eyebrows are a bit honkywonky. For eyebrows it's fine, but the eyes are asymmetrically placed on the head (just mirror the image, I'm sure you can see it). Then there's the roundness of the guy. In the manga the dude seems to be drawn quite edgy. Like the hairline is very square and angular and the cheekbones are very prominent. I guess the long face is a bleach cool-guy feature?

The evenly spaced colors segment the face in an unwanted fashion. You could tighten a few colors together and use a some close values to handle the flat areas.... or dither like a madman.

I can't get over the manga triangle nose on a realistically rendered dude, personally. There's a reason anime is cell shaded really. Not saying it can't be done with softer planes, but you'd need I think, to give him a real nose. Shout if you want an edit.

I think this is what huZba was mentioning:

I am with Helm on this one. It looks very nice overall, but the nose coming from a point at the top looks way odd. Noses do not taper at the top like that.

Get coffee, for there is critique.

Now here's encouragment: I am glad to see you try new things, even by way of anime. I think instead of following my edit you should look at it and think "had I not seen it, what skills should I have in order to have made these changes on my own? Do I need to study real faces? Do I need to study objects in 3d space hit by a lightsource? Do I need to read the prometheus tutorial again?" and so on, heh. I'm not saying don't reference from my edit, but try to understand why I changed things, that is, if you think I changed them for the better. Once you get over your pixel art extravagant phase you'll realize that actually a lot less is needed to make a picture successful than you initially thought. Once the forms are solid, the anatomy there and it emotes something, the rest are just coating.

BTW version 3 is a color corrected one, just to show that you need more dark tones than you need mid-tones right now. And you have waaay too much light, but overexposed is a look that some people like, what do I know.

Thank you Helm.
Why I have not read Arne's tutorials at all actually, so I'm doing it right now  :-[
Anyway, I will call this done for now. And I will study, study and study more.
(Oh, and don't worry: That's not an ear. His ear is completely covered by hair. My knowledge of anatomy is abysmal, but not that catastrophicly bad :D)

I didn't think it was an ear. I knew it was the jaw, but the jaw extended too far in the head, because you didn't construct before you put the hair on.
