Title: [WIP] Game art
Post by: HayovR on December 21, 2015, 04:58:16 pm
Hello folks,

After not doing anything pixel art related for a couple of years I just got back to it. I am working on graphics for a game and am in need of feedback.

I mainly seem to be struggling with a the palette. Sometimes the balance seems off and I am forced to use only really light (close to white) colours for the background for the objects in front to stand out.

Looks good to me although the background doesn't really match the rest because everything has 3 or more shades expect the background.

The background trees seem a bit too light.  And the yellow on the grass seems too saturated.  Although, I always struggle with greens and yellows.
Overall though, this looks great.

I think it looks awesome. As for the trees in the background, why not just make them appear "closer" and make them a few shades darker; almost near the color of the tree up front. Also, your grass/dirt tile's shadows that are admitted from the grass blades/vines feel a bit off, especially with how you have a gap down effect of the shadow.

Other than that I really love your background. I like the style of your cloud and the dirt is perfectly crafted. Your character is spot of too and completely definable. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks for the feedback guys!

In general, should the lighter shades be less saturated (as in the light parts of the skin and grass for example)?

Second version:

Made the grass less saturated and the background darker. Also added (tile-based) mountains.

Love the additions to the background! Those are some awesomely simplistic hills haha. I like your style and the addiitonal cloud really fills the rest of the sky nicely. With the sahdind you've done on the second cloud, I would go back and add some shading to the first cloud to keep with the new cloud-style you've shifted to. The trees look great! They appear much closer and are colored nicely. The fence now looks further away though, as you've lightened it up quite a few shades; I liked how close it felt before--gave it a stern sense of "this is where the doundaries are" with a firm side scroller style boundary limit. With the fence being lighter, it definitely escapes from from that. I believe the new hue of your grass feels a bit off. I tihnk it's too "minty" now and takes away from the warm feel you had before. The new color of the dirt compliments the scenery nicely; well done on that, too. All in all, It's coming to gether well and I'm looking forward to seeing any new updates that you'll share with us!

Thanks!

Another update:

Worked on the mountains a bit, added a barn and a layer of trees in the background.

That barn is really nice and the extra contrast on the fence pulls it together.

yeah the barn looks very good! I love the colors you used , also the background looks way better then before.
Only thing is the cloud in the middle looks kinda too big.

Wow, that looks phenomenal! Your background is great and adds a nice new sense of depth; especially with that new layer of tress. I agree with Pusty, however, the cloud in the middle is quite massive and distracts with its stupendous size. The cloud shadings look dope and are contrasted very well and have perfect values! I love the way the barn looks and feels with it being all gritty and dirty, but the shading on the upper window feels a bit off from your light source. The rest of the barn has  a sense of being flat, but that's just due to a current lack of shading and shadows--but I'm sure you're already already working on that... This is the kind of progress and skill that keeps me coming back to these forums day to day, thank you for sharing! Furthermore, I cannot wait to see your up and coming update!

This is looking really good. Just a few issues with your contrast that are probably making your life more difficult.

Dropped the contrast on the trees, and really dropped the contrast on your grass (read as: made the darker shade lighter).
Increased the contrast on your barn wall and added some shadows from the grass.
Added more shape to your farmer. I feel like he needs more love, because right now he's looking a little too square (and also too dark).

I would also suggest some more love to the Farmer. Unless I'm misunderstanding this, but the farmer looks more like a background piece, not a part of the intractable game. I literally love everything I see so far, though there's something strange for the barn for me. Maybe it's just how much more complex the shading is compared to everything else. The trees, dirt, grass, mountains, everything tie in so well together, and the barn seems like it's a different game.
