Title: Pixel Paint program for Linux?
Post by: Lazycow on October 14, 2007, 05:40:37 am
Hi, does anyone know a paint program for Linux that is useable for pixeling?

I have found Gimp and mtPaint. Using mtPaint now, but its usage is somewhat "rough". (e.g. no keyboard shortcuts for line-tool or fill-tool, no paint raster, strange palette handling, etc.) I wish there would be a program more like Amiga DPaint...

any suggestions?

I'm new to Mac (OSX) since a few days and I tried Pixen, too. But my mouse control was very strange and the palette function is very counterintuitive. But a few minutes ago I tried DosBox for OsX and Grafx2b, works perfectly (in fullscreenmodus). Give it a try. It has no tile features (as far as i know), but the palette feature is quite cool (except that you can't use HSV color model).

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/dosbox/DOSBox-0.72_Universal.dmg.zip?download
http://pixel.scene.org/download/gfx2b965.zip

Copy both Folders into 'Applications', then you run Dosbox and a 'Z:' prompt shows up. Press [ALT]+[RETURN] (Fullscreen) type 'mount c: /applications/', type 'c:', type 'cd gfx2b' (or whatever your gfx2b folder is called) and type 'gfx2'. When you quit gfx2b, the dos prompt shows back. type 'exit' to finish your adventure ;)

If there's a Linux Version of DosBox ( http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/download.php?main=1 ), you could try do run it with Grafx2b (D/P ? -PaintClone).

A friend of mine uses WINE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wine_%28software%29) to run ProMotion, works perfectly when using the commercial version (wine), he told me.

Yeh, I tried ProMotion at a friend in Ubuntu Linux in WINE. It ran pretty much as you would expect it to.

Lots of promotion fans here.  ;) I have just downloaded the feature-restricted "proMotion 5 demo" with wine on Xubutu.
Unfortunately, it's way too slow (about 1 second delay after each mouse move). Also the tool-windows hide everytime behind the main window after I have moved the main window. Did you test a newer version?

Promotion 5.1 is what I tested at my friends place in vanilla Ubuntu, on a VERY good PC tho. Top of the range hardware. Was very fast, no complaints.
