Title: [WIP] Set of the Doomguy smiles
Post by: Jabberwock on May 02, 2011, 05:05:51 pm
Some of them seems not so cool as I wish. How do I fix it ???
Any other critic?

Your template is wrong. Its doesn't leave nearly enough room for facial expressiveness.

If you want to know if you did a good job, give the pictures to someone without the words and see if they can get them right.

That's what the Doom Guy's helmet looks like.

Thank you, I'll try. Don't look at the edges, these smilies are made for black background. Maybe I will made it half-transparent.

Of course!
It is for Doom-related forum. I'll try to change template if there will be many errors with recognition.

So, you're saying this project is inherently flawed?

Jabber, why not use other enemies/characters from the DOOM series in yer emoticons? Couple barons, couple caco's.

The huge challenge is that the whole expression has to be carried by 3x3 pixels per eye.
The three with (nn) (oo) (xx) work pretty well, others are not as immediately readable.
For the crying one, I'd put tear eruptions on the sides of the helmet. Same idea for an angry smiley: red zigzaging lines in the 'background' would convey the emotion. I don't know if animation can be used.

A more radical change, maybe reducing the contrast between face and helmet would help : it would avoid interaction of the '3d edges' lines with the pixels of the expression.

You need to get rid of the black lines for eyebrows on number 8, they make the eyes too cluttered.  I'd also get rid of the highlighted areas above the eyes on number 3, they make the eyes seem to bulge.

I agree with Mathias, This is not working.. why? the expressions is hardly readable coupled with flat /sellout "gray" Helmets with brighter colors at the middle of the small sprite!  It's like trying to guess a ninja's emotions through his hooded face   If i would do an edit I'll most likely change the light source of the helmet and  color palette (even that would most likely not help). But alas I have some health issues at the moment.

And awesome emoticons need mouths
:) ;D :mean: >:( :hehe:  :yell: :blind:

Also... the "asshead" Icon is rather disturbin, alone the name is really really low... not only the quality

Rethink your concept and adapt your smileys to certain...uhm, I don't know how to call it.

The ones that needs the most work, imho, are "crying", "cool", "sad", "bleeding eyes" and "pirate".

- the tears colours is too dark. Use lighter blue, and possibly add a tears pool under the "smiley"
- the temples for the sunglasses on top of the helmet do not work. You may want to oversize the glasses, but do not try to show the temples. Or you may want to use another FPS-guy that would be identified as "cooler than the Doomguy" and who wears sunglasses.

Wow, so many answers!

Sorry, I was offline few days and didnt recieve all your advices in time. But I did a new template and still experimenting.

Now I must decide, which variant is better:
1. could i make faces with oversized eyes (http://doom2d.org/jab/smiles/hm-2.png)
2. or use more traditional anatomy  (http://doom2d.org/jab/smiles/hm-1.png)

Of course! Caco have the best smile from all game monsters. But I'll do it later, my current target is Taggart (Doomguy).

I will try it all. But can you make a sample of "red zigzaging lines", 16х16? Didnt understand what you mean.

You need to get rid of the black lines for eyebrows on number 8, they make the eyes too cluttered.  I'd also get rid of the highlighted areas above the eyes on number 3, they make the eyes seem to bulge.
I'll try.

Also... the "asshead" Icon...
Really, Asshead was born from face template with adding only three pixels, at this time i was bored and it seems drolly for me. There is no Asshead in second version.

I'll try it. And, remember, there is no FPS-guy "cooler than the Doomguy"! (http://doom2d.org/jab/smiles/cool.png)
