Title: [CLOSED][PAID] Redesign and Animate Our Player Character!
Post by: ImpInt on October 12, 2016, 04:49:47 pm
Huge thanks to everyone that applied - we're super impressed by all the talent here!  We've closed the application period for this request, and we'll reach out to everyone that applied!

Hi all,

I’m Tom, founder of Impetuous Imp, a scrappy indie developer in California.  We’re currently developing a 2D, Metroidvania-esque action/puzzle platformer and looking for a pixel artist to help redesign and animate our main character over the next few weeks (can be one-off, but with the potential for much more paid work as the project evolves!).

The Job:
For the initial project, we’re looking for an artist to help us redesign, polish, and animate the character.  We’ll need the full range of animations (e.g. idle, running, jumping, attacks, etc.).  We already have an initial set of sprites we’ve been using in our prototype build (and a few new design concepts), including many of the core animations, so the artist won’t need to start completely from scratch.  The original character design is about 24x32; we’re looking to increase the size/height a bit to add a little more detail, but not to exceed a 32x48 frame for the base character.  The game resolution is 480x240 for cut scenes, 640x360 for most gameplay.  Ideally, we're looking for an artist excited to help develop the character and look of the game and try out new designs!

Style:
Stylistically, for the overall project, we’re going for a Medieval/Steampunk (with a hint of HP Lovecraft for the enemies) vibe – for reference, think:

Marvel 1602 (https://www.google.com/search?q=marvel+1602+iron+man&hl=en&biw=1634&bih=1223&site=webhp&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwirs6Wp1dXPAhXliVQKHUz2CcoQ_AUIBigB)
Army of Darkness (https://www.google.com/search?q=army+of+darkness&espv=2&biw=1634&bih=1223&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiytNn71NXPAhXkxlQKHRWKDnAQ_AUIBygC)
Berserk (https://www.google.com/search?q=berserk&biw=1634&bih=1223&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjg4eDG1dXPAhVhlFQKHe7qAIsQ_AUIBygC)
Fullmetal Alchemist (https://www.google.com/search?q=fullmetal+alchemist+steampunk&biw=1634&bih=1223&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&sqi=2&ved=0ahUKEwjqmv3u1dXPAhWorFQKHQPIARMQ_AUIBigB)
Last Exile (https://www.google.com/search?q=last+exile&biw=1634&bih=1223&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwil7sSL1tXPAhUrqVQKHSQpDs8Q_AUIBigB)
Steamboy (https://www.google.com/search?q=steamboy&biw=1634&bih=1223&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiloMzO1tXPAhWJxVQKHVfiA6UQ_AUIBygC)

Pixel art-wise, we’re big fans of the more minimalist styles used in games like:

Gods Will Be Watching (https://www.google.com/search?q=gods+will+be+watching&biw=1634&bih=1223&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&sqi=2&ved=0ahUKEwiOoZ_d1tXPAhVowlQKHbQYCZQQ_AUIBygC)
Risk of Rain (https://www.google.com/search?q=risk+of+rain+pixel+art&biw=1634&bih=1223&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&sqi=2&ved=0ahUKEwiqtqb81tXPAhUIqVQKHSsBB4kQ_AUIBigB)
Hyper Light Drifter (https://www.google.com/search?q=hyper+light+drifter&biw=1634&bih=1223&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj5oOvK19XPAhWIh1QKHW2jDzUQ_AUIBygC)
Superbrothers Swords and Sworcery (https://www.google.com/search?q=Superbrothers+Swords+and+Sworcery+character+art&biw=1634&bih=1223&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwifz-7q19XPAhUnw1QKHe-ZCKwQ_AUIBigB)

Here a few concept images that capture the sort of feel we want from our redesigned main character (we’ll also provide all of our original artwork, including all of our current animations):

Our Old Design (a bit too small, not steampunk enough):

This project is paid, but right now our art budget is limited, so we’re looking for an artist who can work efficiently.  That said, we’re currently soliciting additional funding, and planning on launching a crowd funding campaign later this year, so we expect our budget to expand for additional artwork/projects (more characters, tilesets, etc.).  We’re open to project rates, hourly rates, and/or revenue sharing (including a bonus based on successful Kickstarter/Indiegogo funding), so please let us know your rates and preferences.

Prospective artists, please link us to or submit a sample of your work, and your current rates.  You can contact us via email (tom@impetuousimp.com (tom@impetuousimp.com)) or message on the forum!  Thanks everyone!
