I've been pixelling for a while now but i'm still not as good as i'd like (but hopefully i'm getting there). Anyway heres a little cartoon creature i did to practice light sources and shading. Done in MS paint, took about an hour and a half, idea first thought up in a german lesson (not strictly relevent lol)
Crits?

An hour and a half for this is pretty bad, but considering the quality of the piece, it's probably not important at your skill level.

Pretty horrible edit of the piece, but it shows some important things.. You have way too many colors in here, especially ones that are almost identical. I did a bit of AA'ing, increased contrast, dithered around a bit..
-
He didn't have far too many colors, they just needed a bit more contrast ^^
-
Quick 15 minute edit:
Here's what I did;
-I AA'ed just about everything except the background, I think it's fine.
-Added a buffer tone between the darkest and the second darkest.
-I lowered the saturation. You had almost every color set to 100.
-The left foot was pilow shaded, so I fixed that.
-
I think that's nice for an hour and half, I would take more than that to make something on that level. But I'm just a noob, anyway... =\
It looks good, only thing I was gonna say is that it didn't look so roundy, but now with the edits it is nice.
-
forget the background work on shape and form first.
yay for 2 minute purple shadowed oekaki edits:

Sorry, I meant that too many of his colors were pretty much useless. Minced my words up or however you say it.

I had added AA, and moved light source. Spikes are now replaced by 'hair'. :P

I dnt think your edit makes the most of possible AAing TeenIce I'd personally do this..

Yea, your right. It was just a quick edit, I dont have time to play with it seriously right now. ;)

Ok had 10 mins to try editing it.
Increased contrast between the main colours.
Tried a bit of dithering
Quickly changed some colours in the eye.
When get more time im going to AA. Then if i get the hang of that i'll go back to the lines and recolour it with the light direction TeenIce suggested (love that shading!)
-I lowered the saturation. You had almost every color set to 100.
Hehe, paints telling me it was set to 240, ill tone them down so they dont burn your eyes out in the next edit XD
-
I think you should chose colors before shading and adding AA (at least that one you will use as basic color). ;) Btw. read topics about AA practice.

On my slider, it's just 0-100 in percentage.

KK, What program do you use? im told paints crap...
I've tried a few colour variations but im not happy with it yet.
-
You can use Graphicsgale or Promotion. They both are good and have trial verions ^^ (GG's being nearly complete)
-
I prefer Graphicsgale. I was using Promotion but its only 30 day trial and there are some problems with saving to GIF files.
If you're having problems with colors - copy them from someones work :P

Because we need more people following this philosophy. ::)

oh wow I didnt read the whole topic I jst editted someone elses edit. sry bout that. :-[
well Omegasonic I wouldn't be atall concerned about AAing at the moment, your work needs more contrast imo, not to say everything you do needs high contrasting colours just especially with pixel art it's nice to see a bit more depth. there's hardly any difference between each shade with just gives it a flat look, whether your shading/lightsource is correct without the contrast there just isn't any depth.
You've used a straight forward dithering technique to smoothen the transition of each shade, which isn't atall necissery I like the phrase 'only dither where absolutely necissery'.
looking good though that edit should help. But don't be too concerned about AAing, its more for finishing pieces imo, your main concern should always be shape, lighting and colour.

I use Pixen. But it's only for Macs.

I prefere graphics gale because its easy to learn and it is much faster than MS paint :)
-
I'm gonna check out graphicsgale, ty.
Went back to the lines and heres my attempt at shifting the lightsource. I also toned the colours down. I havn't done it all yet because i want to know if the lights right before carrying on shading it.

Don't bump your threads if you have no update on your artwork, this is bad form.

i'd personally change the eyes to make them more...cute.. :P

There is plenty to learn even if you haven't received comments on your latest update. You haven't really seemed to take much of the advice posted above into consideration. Numerous edits have been made which illustrate how the piece lacks depth, volume, and contrast. Looking at the update and the first image you started with, there is little difference. If you aren't diligent with it, don't expect to get much better.
