How to Kill Squint Without Ruining Your Save

If you’ve made up your mind and he has to go, don't just run in spraying bullets. The Lesser Zone is still populated.

  1. Check your surroundings. Make sure there aren't any heavily armed loners or Ward members nearby who might take offense to you murdering a trader in cold blood.
  2. Use a silenced weapon if you have one. It’s just cleaner.
  3. Loot everything. His PDA is the quest item, but his stash notes are where the real value lies.

If you kill him and find yourself regretting it because you realized you needed a place to sell your junk, you’re out of luck. There is no "resurrection" mechanic in the Zone. Once a named NPC is dead, they stay dead. You’d have to reload a previous save, which, depending on how long you spent fighting mutants on the way there, could cost you hours of progress.

The Verdict: To Kill or Not to Kill?

Most veterans of the original Shadow of Chernobyl will tell you to save your money. The Zone is a place where "might makes right." However, Heart of Chornobyl is a much more reactive game.

  • Save your game: Create a manual save before you interact with him. This allows you to see the outcome of the kill-path versus the pay-path without committing to a 40-hour journey with a choice you hate.
