You’re staring at the screen, heart hammering against your ribs, watching the Knight’s white shell crack as a Great Husk Sentry swings its heavy blade. One hit left. You’ve been there. We’ve all been there. In Hallownest, survival isn’t just about how fast you can dash; it’s about how many hits you can take before the screen fades to black. That’s where hollow knight mask fragments come in.
Most players think of these as just "extra health." Sure, that's the basic gist. But honestly, the math behind these shards is way more interesting than it looks on the surface. Getting your first upgrade to six masks isn't just a 20% health boost. It’s the difference between "I can't believe I died" and "I have one HP left to pull off a miracle heal."
The Math of Survival: It's Not Just +1
Basically, you start with five masks. You need four hollow knight mask fragments to make a whole new mask. Total, there are 16 shards hidden in the world, which means you can end up with a total of nine masks.

But here is what most people get wrong. They think if a boss deals double damage (two masks), going from five to six health doesn't matter because it still takes three hits to die. Wrong. Think about healing. If you take two damage and have five health, you’re at three. You heal one, you’re at four. The next double-damage hit puts you at two.
If you had six health? That same scenario leaves you with a "buffer" mask. That extra shard often saves your run during those frantic boss staggers where you’re trying to focus soul as fast as humanly possible.
Where Sly Hides His Goods
Sly is a greedy little bug. We love him, but man, he makes you work for it. You’ll find him shivering in a hut in the southeastern corner of the Forgotten Crossroads. Once you snap him out of his funk, he heads back to Dirtmouth and starts charging you premium Geo for those shiny fragments.
- Shard 1: 150 Geo. Buy it immediately.
- Shard 2: 500 Geo. Still a bargain.
- Shard 3: 800 Geo. You need the Shopkeeper’s Key from Crystal Peak first.
- Shard 4: 1,500 Geo. This is the big one. Also requires that key.
Honestly, don't sleep on the Shopkeeper's Key. It's sitting in a room just northwest of the first bench in Crystal Peak. Just grab it. It unlocks the most reliable health upgrades in the game.
Combat Rewards and Hidden Nooks
If you aren't into spending Geo, you’re going to have to fight for your life. Some of the most satisfying hollow knight mask fragments are locked behind bosses that will absolutely wreck you if you're unprepared.
Take the Brooding Mawlek. It’s tucked away in the western part of the Forgotten Crossroads. It’s an early-game boss, but it hits like a truck if you haven't mastered the pogo. Kill it, and a shard is your prize.
Then there's the Enraged Guardian. You’ll find this guy sitting on a bench in Crystal Peak. Once you beat his first form, you can jump up to a hidden room above him. He’s faster, angrier, and deals double damage. It’s a hectic fight, but the mask fragment waiting behind him is worth the stress.
Don't forget the Hive. Deep in that honey-soaked hellscape, there’s a breakable wall. You have to bait a Hive Guardian—those big, round, bouncing bees—into smashing into the wall for you. It’s sort of a "nature's wrecking ball" situation.
The Quests That Break You
Some shards aren't about combat; they’re about patience. Or lack thereof.

- The Grey Mourner's Flower: This is the most infamous quest in the game. You have to carry a Delicate Flower from the Resting Grounds all the way to the Queen's Gardens. If you take damage, the flower breaks. If you use a Stag Station, it breaks.
- The Seer's Reward: You need 1,500 Essence. That means hunting down Dream Warriors and hitting trees with your Dream Nail until your eyes bleed.
- The Grubfather: Rescue five grubs. Just five! He’s so happy to see them he’ll toss you a fragment. It’s probably the easiest one in the game.
- Bretta's House: You have to save Bretta first. She’s stuck in a fungal cavern near the Dashmaster statue. Once you rescue her, she moves to Dirtmouth. Go into her basement—there's your shard.
Missing the Easy Ones?
Check the Queen's Station. To the right of the stag station, there’s a platforming section with some thorns. It’s easy to walk right past it if you’re rushing to the Fungal Wastes.
Also, look under the False Knight's arena in the Crossroads. There’s a room with Goams (those big rocky things that slam down). If you have the Mantis Claw, you can navigate the gaps to find a hidden alcove with a shard.
Stone Sanctuary is another one people miss. It’s in Greenpath, but it’s dark. Like, really dark. You’ll want the Lumafly Lantern before you head in there to find the shard sitting near No Eyes’ arena.
Actionable Strategy for Your Run
If you're struggling, stop throwing yourself at the bosses and go on a scavenger hunt.
First, unlock Sly and buy the 150 and 500 Geo shards. That's half a mask right there for basically no effort. Next, rescue five grubs. You probably have three or four already if you’ve been exploring at all. That’s your third shard. Finally, head to the Forgotten Crossroads and take out the Brooding Mawlek.
Boom. Six masks.
This early-game power spike is massive. It allows you to survive the Mantis Lords or the Soul Master with a bit of breathing room. Once you get the Monarch Wings later, you can clean up the harder ones like the Hive and the Enraged Guardian. Hallownest is a brutal place, but it’s a lot less scary when you aren't constantly one hit away from a "Game Over" screen.

Next Step: Head to the Forgotten Crossroads and locate the Grubfather's home in the northwest corner. Check how many grubs you've saved; if you're at five, you've got a free health upgrade waiting for you right now.
