You’re playing GTA 5 wrong.
Seriously. Most people finish the main story, see a few million dollars in their character's bank account, and think they've made it. They buy a hangar, maybe a nice car, and then they're broke. They missed the entire point of the stock market Lester missions. If you do these missions as soon as they pop up on your map, you are essentially setting fire to hundreds of millions of dollars. It's the biggest mistake a player can make in Los Santos.
The trick isn't just "buying low and selling high." It's about market manipulation on a massive scale. Lester Crest isn't just giving you hits; he's giving you insider trading tips that would make a Wall Street hedge fund manager blush. By the time you finish the "Big Score" heist, you should have around $25 million to $40 million per character. If you save Lester's assassinations until after that heist, you can turn that "small" fortune into a staggering $2.1 billion. That is the hard cap. The game literally cannot handle more money than that.
Why You Must Wait to Start the Stock Market Lester Missions
Look, the temptation is real. You see the "L" on the map early in the game and you want to progress. But here is the thing: the return on your investment is based on a percentage.
If you invest $100,000 into a stock that grows 80%, you make $80,000. Not bad, right? But if you invest $30,000,000 into that same stock, you walk away with $24,000,000 in pure profit. This is why timing is everything. You need the capital from the final heist to make the math work in your favor.
There is one exception. You have to do the first mission, "The Hotel Assassination," to move the story forward. That's fine. Use what little cash you have then, but save the rest. Every other hit—the Redwood hit, the Facade hit, the Vapid hit—needs to stay untouched until Franklin, Michael, and Trevor are sitting on their end-of-game payout. If you've already finished them, honestly, you might want to restart your save if you care about buying every property in the game.
The Mechanics of the LCN and BAWSAQ
You've got two markets in the game. The LCN is influenced by in-game events and is strictly offline. The BAWSAQ, historically, was tied to the Rockstar Social Club and the collective actions of all players.

For the stock market Lester missions, you'll be hopping between both. The UI is clunky, sure. But the logic is sound. When Lester tells you a CEO is about to have a "sudden health crisis," the competitor's stock is going to skyrocket because they're about to swallow up market share. It's predatory. It’s mean. It's also how you get rich.
The First Hit: The Hotel Assassination
This is your primer. You're targeting a guy staying at the Von Crastenburg Hotel. His death is going to tank Bilkington and send Betta Pharmaceuticals (BET) through the roof.
Before you even start the mission, open your phone. Go to the LCN website. Put every single cent from Michael, Franklin, and Trevor into Betta Pharmaceuticals.
After the hit, you’ll see the stock climb. You're looking for roughly a 40% to 50% return. Don't be impatient. Sometimes it takes an in-game day or two. Sleep in your safehouse (without saving, if you want to be careful) to advance time. Once it peaks, sell everything. But wait—there's a second move. Bilkington (BIL) will have bottomed out. You can actually buy Bilkington while it’s at its lowest point and wait for it to recover over a few days for a secondary profit, though the return is much smaller than Betta.
The Multi-Target Assassination and the Redwood Crash
This one is fun. You're taking out four corrupt jurors. The target company here is Debonaire (DEB) on the LCN.
- Before the mission: Invest everything in Debonaire.
- After the mission: Sell Debonaire when it hits about 60% to 80% return.
- Immediately after selling: Put all that money into Redwood (RWC).
Why Redwood? Because you just ruined them. Their stock is in the basement. But in the world of GTA, no giant corporation stays down forever. It takes about 48 to 96 in-game hours for Redwood to bounce back. When it does, it usually yields a massive 300% return. This is the moment where your bank account starts looking like a phone number.

The Vice Assassination: I-Fruit and Facade
Everyone loves an iPhone, right? Well, in Los Santos, everyone loves the iFruit. In this mission, you're hitting the CEO of Facade to clear the way for Fruit (FRT) on the BAWSAQ.
Same drill.
Buy Fruit before the mission. Sell it once it hits around 50% profit. Then, look at Facade (FAC). It will have dropped significantly. Buy the dip. Facade will eventually recover, giving you another 30% cushion. It’s a slower burn, but at this stage, your 30% is worth millions.
The Bus Assassination: A Different Strategy
This one confuses people because the strategy is reversed. You aren't buying the "winner" before the mission. You are buying the "loser" after the hit.
The target is a billionaire who commutes by bus (weird, I know). You're taking him out to hurt Vapid (VAP).
Don't buy anything before you start. Complete the mission, then go to the BAWSAQ and look for Vapid. It will have crashed by exactly 50%. Sink every penny into it. Wait a few days. The stock will rebound to its original price, meaning you have effectively doubled your entire net worth in one transaction.

The Construction Assassination: The Final Payday
This is the big one. Gold Coast (GCD) on the LCN.
Before the mission, buy Gold Coast. After the mission, sell it for about an 80% profit. If you have done this correctly and saved these missions for the end of the game, this is usually the point where each character hits the $2.1 billion mark.
Critical Tips for Success
- Manual Saves are Your Friend: Always save your game in a new slot before starting an assassination. If the market doesn't behave or you miss the peak, you need a way to go back.
- The Sleep Trick: Saving your game advances time. Michael sleeps for 6 hours, Franklin for 8, and Trevor for a whopping 12. Use Trevor to speed through the days if you're waiting for a stock to recover.
- Check All Characters: I cannot stress this enough. You have to manually switch to Michael and Trevor to make them buy the stocks too. The game won't do it for you. If you only do it with Franklin, he’ll be a billionaire while Michael is still worrying about his mortgage.
- Ignore the "Average Change": The green and red arrows on the stock page are often lagging. Look at the actual "Current Price" versus your "Average Price" in your portfolio.
The $2.1 Billion Limit
You might wonder why $2,147,483,647 is the magic number. It isn't a random choice by Rockstar. It’s the maximum value of a 32-bit signed integer in programming. If you earn even one dollar more, the number could technically "wrap around" into a negative value, making you the most indebted person in history. The game prevents this by capping you.
Once you hit this cap, money becomes irrelevant. You can buy the Los Santos Golf Club for $150,000,000 and not even notice the dip in your funds. You can buy every plane in Elitás Travel. You can customize a thousand cars and leave them in the middle of the freeway just because you can.
Actionable Next Steps
If you are currently sitting in front of your console or PC, here is exactly what you should do:
- Check your map. If you see a green "L" and you haven't finished the "Big Score" heist yet, leave it alone.
- Finish the main story. Focus on getting the maximum possible take from the final heist. This usually involves picking the "Obvious" approach and using the best possible crew members (though they take a higher cut, they prevent you from losing gold during the escape).
- Complete the Epsilon Program (Michael only). If you need extra seed money before the Lester missions, Michael can earn an easy $2.1 million by completing the "Unknowing the Truth" mission and stealing the car instead of delivering it.
- Execute the hits in order. Follow the buy/sell instructions for the Multi-Target, Vice, Bus, and Construction assassinations.
- Diversify nothing. This isn't real life. Diversification is for people who want to protect wealth. You are here to create it. Go "all in" on every single trade.
By the time the smoke clears, the streets of Los Santos will be yours. You won't just be a criminal; you'll be the person who owns the city.
