You’ve probably seen them. Those massive, hunched-over stone slabs that look suspiciously like trolls, scattered across the Nine Realms. If you’ve spent any time poking around Midgard or Vanaheim, you’ve likely walked right up to one, mashed every button on your controller, and realized... nothing happens.
Kratos just stands there. Mimir might make a comment about them being "dormant," but the game doesn't give you a quest marker or a giant glowing "Press O to Wake Up" prompt.
Honestly, it’s one of the coolest "hidden in plain sight" secrets in the game. These aren't just background decorations. They are actual bosses, and finding all the God of War Ragnarok troll locations is the only way to get your hands on the Steinbjorn armor, which is basically the "God Mode" gear for anyone who hates dying.
The Secret Key: Grabbing the Mystical Heirloom
Before you go hunting, you need the "key." You can't just yell at these rocks to wake them up. You need a specific Relic called the Mystical Heirloom.
Here is the catch: you can’t get it until fairly late in the story. You specifically need the Draupnir Spear. Once you have that, head to Midgard. Just southwest of Tyr’s Temple, near the Lost Treasury, there’s a big block of ice with a glowing yellow crack. Pop that with your spear, and inside, you’ll find the heirloom lying next to a corpse and a lore scroll.

It does literally nothing in actual combat. If you equip it and use it (L1 + Circle), Kratos just claps it together and it making a little "clink" sound. It’s useless—unless you’re standing in front of a troll statue.
Where to Find All the Stone Trolls
There are technically four trolls, but they are tucked away in three specific spots. Here is where you need to go.
1. Midgard: The Derelict Outpost
The first one is usually Blodugr Steinn. He’s chilling (literally) in the Derelict Outpost.
- The Route: Head to the Lake of Nine and look for the canyon that leads to the Outpost in the southwest.
- The Spot: You’ll have to do a bit of climbing and swinging with the Blades of Chaos. Once you clear a small gap and reach the main "ruins" area, he’s just standing there.
- The Reward: Killing him gets you your first Slumber Stone and the Poison Protector enchantment.
2. Alfheim: The Forbidden Sands
This one is easy to miss because the Alfheim desert is huge and annoying to navigate during a sandstorm.

- The Prerequisite: You have to finish the "Song of the Sands" favor first to clear the storm. If you don't, you won't be able to see five feet in front of you, let alone a troll.
- The Spot: Go to the far west/southwest of the Forbidden Sands. There’s a raised platform you can grapple onto. Up there, you’ll find Bjarg Stormr.
- The Fight: He’s a big guy, but his moves are slow. Pop the heirloom, dodge his pillar slams, and collect your Slumber Stone.
3. Vanaheim: Noatun’s Garden
This is the "boss fight" of the set. You aren't fighting one troll here; you're fighting two at the exact same time.
- The Spot: Head to the River Delta and row your boat to Noatun’s Garden. It’s the area with all the poisonous plants and the ghost looking for her family.
- The Duo: Golrab of the Ashes and Golrab of the Frost are standing like guards near the large building at the back.
- Pro Tip: This fight is kind of a pain. The Ash troll is resistant to your Blades of Chaos, and the Frost troll laughs at your Leviathan Axe. You basically have to swap weapons constantly or just use the Draupnir Spear to poke them both to death. Focus on one at a time if you can, because having two pillars swinging at your head at once is a recipe for a quick reload.
Why Even Bother? (The Steinbjorn Armor)
You might be wondering why you’re wasting time waking up grumpy rocks. It’s all about the Slumber Stones.
Once you have all the stones from these four trolls, head to any Huldra Brother shop (well, Lunda or Sindri/Brok depending on where you are in the story). You can craft the Steinbjorn Armor set.
This armor is ridiculous. It has the highest Defense stat in the entire game. But the real "broken" part is the Bloodthirsty Retaliation perk. When you take damage, your successful attacks for a short time will actually heal you back. It’s very similar to the rally mechanic in Bloodborne. If you’re struggling with the endgame Berserker fights or Gna, this armor makes you significantly harder to kill.

The "Bonus" Boss: The Svartalfheim Dragon
While everyone looks for God of War Ragnarok troll locations, there is actually one more secret the Mystical Heirloom unlocks.
If you head to Dragon Beach in Svartalfheim, you’ll see a massive statue of a dragon. Most players assume it’s just cool environmental art. It isn't. Stand in front of it and use the Heirloom.
The dragon, known as The Everlasting, will wake up. It’s a much tougher fight than the trolls—it’s a full-on dragon boss fight like the ones you find in the Vanaheim Crater. Defeating it won't give you Slumber Stones, but it does drop Dragon Claws and a bunch of resources for your Dragon Scale armor.
Quick Summary Checklist:
- Get the Spear (Main Story).
- Find the Heirloom in Midgard (Southwest of Tyr's Temple).
- Wake Blodugr (Midgard - Derelict Outpost).
- Wake Bjarg (Alfheim - Forbidden Sands).
- Wake the Duo (Vanaheim - Noatun's Garden).
- Craft the Armor at any shop.
Once you’ve cleared these out, you’ve essentially finished one of the coolest unlisted scavenger hunts in the game. If you're going for the Platinum trophy, you'll need the armor for the "Full Girdle" trophy anyway, so you might as well get it done before you head into the final chapters.
Go to the forge immediately after the Vanaheim fight. Even if you don't plan on wearing the full Steinbjorn set, the wrist and waist pieces provide massive stat boosts that can be mixed and matched with other sets like the Lunda or Berserker gear for a more balanced build.
