If you don't have a plan, you're going to get stuck. I’ve seen people wander these icy floors for forty minutes just trying to find the exit, let alone Articuno.

Why the Seafoam Islands Map is a Total Nightmare

The layout is a vertical labyrinth spread across five different floors. Unlike Mt. Moon or Rock Tunnel, where you basically just walk until you find a ladder, Seafoam requires you to manipulate the environment. You see those Strength boulders? They aren't just for show. If you don't drop them down the correct holes, the water currents on the basement floors will remain too fast to swim through. You’ll just get pushed back over and over again. It’s frustrating.

The "map" isn't really a map in the traditional sense; it’s a series of interlocking puzzles. You drop a boulder on 1F, it falls to B1F, you push it again to B2F, and so on. If you mess up the order, you have to leave the cave and come back in to reset the boulders. Total time sink.

Breaking Down the Floors

The Entry Level (1F)

When you first walk in from Route 20, things look simple. There are two boulders here. Your primary goal on this floor is to get both of them into their respective holes. If you’re coming from the east (Fuchsia side), you’ll encounter the first boulder almost immediately. Push it into the hole nearby. Don't overthink it. Just get it down there.

The Middle Basements (B1F and B2F)

This is where the Pokemon Leaf Green Seafoam Islands map starts to get claustrophobic. These floors are mostly transit zones. You’ll find trainers—mostly swimmers and sailors—hanging out here. The Wild Pokemon levels jump up a bit too. You’ll start seeing Seel and Zubat (always Zubat), and maybe a Krabby or Horsea depending on your luck.

The trick here is tracking where your boulders landed. You need to keep pushing them down the holes until they reach the very bottom. If you skip a hole, the "plug" won't work later.

The Bottom Floor (B4F) and the Current

This is the "basement of champions." It’s freezing, it’s blue, and the music is legendary. This is where the fast-moving water lives. Until you drop the two boulders from the upper floors into the designated spots on B3F, the water on B4F will sweep you away toward the east exit before you can reach the northwest corner.

That northwest corner is the prize. That’s where Articuno sits.

The Articuno Factor

Let's be real. Nobody goes through the Seafoam Islands just for the shortcut to Cinnabar. You’re here for the bird. Articuno is a Level 50 Ice/Flying type, and in Leaf Green, it’s a tank.

To get to it, you need to navigate to the far west side of B4F. Once the boulders are in place, the water becomes still. You can then Surf across to a small island in the top-left quadrant.

Pro Tip: Bring Ultra Balls. Lots of them. And a Pokemon that knows False Swipe or a sleep-inducing move like Spore or Sleep Powder. Parasect is actually surprisingly decent for this if it’s leveled high enough, though its 4x weakness to Ice makes it a risky play. Honestly, a high-level Butterfree with Compound Eyes and Sleep Powder is a more reliable bet for hitting those 97% accuracy sleeps.

Common Mistakes People Make

Most people forget to bring Strength. It sounds stupid, but imagine getting to the third floor and realizing your HM slave is sitting in a PC box in Fuchsia. You also need Surf. Obviously.

Another big mistake? Killing the boulders. If you push a boulder against a wall in a way that it can no longer be moved toward a hole, you're done. You have to walk out the door, watch the screen fade to black, and come back in to find them reset.

  1. Don't use Escape Ropes until you've caught Articuno.
  2. Don't forget that the Seafoam Islands is an excellent place to grind for your Fire-type or Electric-type Pokemon before the Cinnabar Gym.
  3. Keep an eye out for the Water Stone hidden on B2F. It's incredibly useful if you’re running a Staryu or Eevee.

There are actually two separate sets of "current puzzles" in the Pokemon Leaf Green Seafoam Islands map.

The first set is on the east side. This is what you use to exit the cave toward Cinnabar Island. If you just want to get through the story, focus on the holes on the right side of the maps.

The second set is on the west side. This is exclusively for reaching Articuno. Most casual players get confused because they drop one boulder on the east and one on the west and then wonder why the water is still moving. You need pairs of boulders to block the flow. Two boulders for the exit current, two boulders for the Articuno current.

Wild Encounters and Logistics

The encounter rate in Seafoam is high. Like, "every three steps" high. If you aren't trying to level up, buy 20 Super Repels. Don't bother with Max Repels; they cost too much per step. Super Repels are the most cost-effective way to keep the Seel and Golduck off your back while you're trying to solve the boulder puzzles.

If you’re playing the original Leaf Green on a Game Boy Advance or an SP, the screen can get a bit dark in these caves. Make sure you're in good lighting because some of the "holes" in the floor look a lot like regular dark tiles if your brightness is low.

Actionable Strategy for a Smooth Run

To master the Seafoam Islands, follow this specific sequence:

  • Enter from the Fuchsia side (East). This is the natural progression of the game.
  • Clear the trainers on 1F first. This gives you room to breathe while pushing boulders.
  • Focus on the Northwest boulders first. If you want Articuno, you have to prioritize those holes. There are two boulders near each other on the lower floors that must be dropped into the two holes side-by-side.
  • Check the current. Before you Surf, look at the water. If it’s moving, don't jump in. You’ll just end up back at the ladder.
  • Save your game. Save before you push the final boulder into the B3F holes, and definitely save before you interact with Articuno. One accidental critical hit and that Bird is gone forever.

Once you’ve caught Articuno and blocked the currents, the path to the Cinnabar side exit is a straight shot. You'll emerge on Route 20, just a short Surf away from the Pokemon Lab and Blaine’s Gym.
