The world literally ended. You’re Celes, you’re on a tiny island with a dying old man, and the soundtrack is a lonely, haunting oboe melody. Honestly, the first time I played Final Fantasy VI, this shift felt like a gut punch. Most RPGs let you save the world. FF6 makes you fail first.

Starting From Scratch in a Broken World
Celes wakes up after a year-long coma. It’s bleak. Your first "quest" is catching fish for Cid. Pro tip: if you want Cid to live, catch the fast-moving fish. If you want the more "canonical" depressing scene where he passes away, feed him the slow ones. Either way, you end up on the mainland near Albrook.
Don't spend too much time grinding here. You’re weak, and the enemies are weirdly aggressive. Head north to Tzen. You’ll see a house collapsing. This is a timed mission to save a kid. If you’ve got the Jewel Ring, wear it—petrification is a run-killer here. Sabin is holding up the house, and once you get the kid out, the brothers are reunited. Well, one brother.
You’ll hear rumors about a "King" in Nikeah. Take the boat. You’ll find Edgar, though he’s pretending to be a bandit named Gerad. It’s a pretty thin disguise. Follow him through South Figaro and into the Cave to the Sealed Gate. This leads you to Mobliz, where Terra has become a surrogate mother to a bunch of orphans. She’s lost her will to fight. You can’t force her back into the party yet. Just beat Phunbaba, get the Fenrir Magicite, and move on.
Rebuilding the Team: The Non-Linear Slog
Once you get the Falcon—the second airship—from Daryl’s Tomb, the game truly opens up. This is where most players get overwhelmed. You can technically go straight to Kefka’s Tower, but you’ll get absolutely demolished.
Setzer is mandatory. Celes, Edgar, and Sabin are basically your core. From here, I usually head to Kohlingen to find Setzer. Then, head to the Maranda area. You’ll find Cyan in Mt. Zozo. You need the Rust Rid to open the chest in Zozo that leads to the mountain. Cyan’s sidequest involves a lot of backtracking and a very annoying boss called Storm Dragon, but getting him back is essential for his "Bushido" upgrades.

The Gau and Shadow Dilemma
Gau is still on the Veldt. To get him back, just fight a battle with three or fewer people in your party. He’ll jump in. Simple.
Shadow is a different story. If you didn’t wait for him on the Floating Continent during the first half of the game, he’s dead. Period. If you did wait, you’ll find him in the Cave on the Veldt. After saving him, he goes to the Coliseum. Bet the Ichigeki (Striker) sword to fight him and get him to join for real.
Finding the Misfits
Relm is in Jidoor, inside Owzer’s Mansion. The lights are out, and the paintings are possessed. It’s a bit of a horror vibe. Look for the Emperor's letter. After you beat Chadarnook, Relm joins. To get Strago, take Relm to the Fanatics' Tower. He’s wandering around at the base, brainwashed by a cult. Seeing Relm snaps him out of it.
Umaro and Gogo are the "secret" characters. Gogo is found by letting a monster called the Zone Eater swallow your whole party on Triangle Island. Don't fight back. Just let it eat you. Inside its belly is a dungeon where Gogo hangs out. Umaro is in the Narshe mines. You need Mog in your party to recruit him. Mog himself is hiding in the Narshe caves, right where the Moogles lived at the start of the game. Check the wall behind him for the Moogle Charm—it’s the best item in the game because it disables random encounters.
The Most Overlooked Power Spikes
Most people think levels matter most. They don't. Magicite and equipment do.
In this ff6 world of ruin walkthrough, you have to prioritize the Phoenix Cave. You need two separate parties to navigate it. It’s tedious, but the reward is Locke. Once Locke is back, he opens all those locked doors in South Figaro and Narshe. More importantly, he gives you the Phoenix Magicite, which teaches Arise and Firaga.

Go back to Narshe with Locke. The weapon shop owner has a choice for you: the Ragnarok Magicite or the Ragnarok Sword.
- The Sword: Can be bet at the Coliseum for the Lightbringer (the best weapon in the game).
- The Magicite: Teaches Ultima, the most broken spell in RPG history.
Honestly? Take the Magicite. You can learn Ultima from the Paladin Shield anyway, but that takes 256 battles with the Cursed Shield equipped. That’s a lot of grinding. If you want ease of use, take the rock.
The Ancient Castle and Blue Magic
Underneath Figaro Castle, there’s a whole buried civilization. While the castle is traveling between Kohlingen and South Figaro, it’ll hit a bump. Stop and explore. This is the Ancient Castle.
You’ll find the Odin Magicite here. But wait. If you stand in the throne room and take five steps down from the right-hand throne, you’ll find a hidden switch. This opens a basement where Odin transforms into Raiden. Raiden is better for stats, but Odin is the only way to learn Meteor early. Decide if you want the spell or the strength bonus.
While you're doing all this, make sure Strago is in your party for the "Mighty Guard" Lore. It’s one of the best defensive buffs in the game. You can learn it from the Mover enemies in Kefka's Tower or by using Relm’s Sketch ability on various monsters.
Preparing for the Final Ascent
Kefka’s Tower is a beast. You need three distinct teams. If you’ve only leveled up four characters, you’re in trouble.

- Team 1: Needs your best healer.

Make sure someone has the Economizer (Celestriad) equipped. It reduces all MP costs to 1. You can win these from Brachiosaur in the Dinosaur Forest, but be warned: Brachiosaur can wipe your party in one turn with Ultima or Meteor.
Actionable Strategy for Victory
Don't just rush the end. The World of Ruin is about the journey of these broken people.
- Get the Falcon immediately. It’s the hub for everything.
- Rescue Mog and get the Moogle Charm. It makes exploring the harder dungeons like the Phoenix Cave way less frustrating.
- Uncurse the Shield. Put the Cursed Shield on someone with a Ribbon and go to a low-level area. Fight 256 battles. It’s a slog, but the Paladin Shield teaches Ultima and absorbs almost every element.
- Visit the Dragon's Den. If you’re playing the GBA or Pixel Remaster versions, there are extra challenges here, but the core game remains the same.
- Master the Coliseum. Learn what items turn into what. Betting the Elixir gets you a Renaming Card, which bets into a Marvel Shoes (Auto-Regen, Auto-Haste, Auto-Shell, Auto-Protect). It’s the best defensive accessory for casual play.
Kefka is waiting at the top of a tower made of garbage and gods. He’s got 62,000 HP in his final form, which isn't much by modern standards, but he hits hard. If you have everyone casting Ultima or using Sabin’s Phantom Rush (Bum Rush), the "God of Magic" won't stand a chance.
Go to the Veldt and spend an hour teaching Gau the "Stray Cat" or "Nightshade" rages if you want to see some truly weird combat interactions. Otherwise, stick to the heavy hitters and keep your Reflect rings off—you'll want to be able to heal yourself when the tower starts crumbling.
