You're wandering through the Dry Reef, your vacpack is humming, and suddenly you see it. A massive, wobbling mountain of pink goo just sitting there, blocking a cave entrance. That’s a Gordo. If you’ve played Slime Rancher for more than twenty minutes, you know these guys are the literal gatekeepers of the Far, Far Range. They don't move. They don't attack. They just sit there and eat until they literally pop into existence-altering rewards.
Most players think finding all gordo slimes in slime rancher is just about getting extra keys. That's part of it, sure. But these gluttonous behemoths are actually the backbone of your world progression, hiding teleporters, shortcuts, and those sweet, sweet Slime Keys that unlock the Ancient Ruins or the Glass Desert. Honestly, it’s a lot of food. You're going to need hundreds of veggies, fruits, and chickens.
The Logistics of Popping a Gordo
Before we get into locations, let's talk mechanics because people mess this up constantly. A standard Gordo takes 50 units of food to burst. However, if you feed them their "favorite" food—like Heart Beets for a Rock Gordo—that counts as double. You only need 25 of a favorite food to get the job done.
It’s basically a math game.
Do you spend the time gardening Cuberries for that Phosphorus Gordo, or do you just dump 50 random Pogo Fruits into its mouth because you have them lying around? Usually, the latter is faster if you're speedrunning, but favorites are better for inventory management. When they pop, they explode into ten smaller slimes of their type, some crates, and usually a Slime Key or a static teleporter.
The Dry Reef: Your Starting Obstacles
The Dry Reef is home to the first Gordos most players encounter. It's the "tutorial" zone, but the Pink Gordos here are essential.
There are actually two Pink Gordos in the Reef. The first one is impossible to miss—it’s sitting on a path near the entrance to the Moss Blanket/Indigo Quarry transition. It’s the easiest one to pop because Pink Slimes eat anything. Give it your trash. Give it carrots. Give it those weird hen hens you found behind the ranch. Once it pops, you get your first Slime Key.
The second Pink Gordo is a bit more tucked away. You’ll find it on a ring-shaped island. You actually have to do a bit of platforming to get to it, or just use your jetpack if you’ve already upgraded. This one is technically "optional" for a casual playthrough, but if you're a completionist, you can't skip it. It also grants a Slime Key, which is vital if you want to skip ahead to later zones without backtracking.
Then there's the Tabby Gordo. This one is sitting on a small island off the coast of the Dry Reef. It doesn't give a key. Instead, it reveals a static teleporter that leads directly back to your Ranch. It’s a lifesaver. You’ll need 50 meat items (Stony Hens are best) to move this cat.
The Indigo Quarry and the Rock Gordos
The Indigo Quarry is a blue-hued, jagged mess of caves and radioactive hazards. You’ll find two Rock Gordos here.
The first Rock Gordo is blocking a tunnel that leads deeper into the quarry. It’s grumpy. It wants Heart Beets. If you haven't started a garden yet, the Quarry is a wake-up call. Without those beets, you’re lugging 50 veggies through a cave full of Rad Slimes. Not fun. Popping this one opens a shortcut back to the central hub of the Quarry.
There’s also a Rad Gordo hiding in the Quarry. It’s inside a cave system, and it’s surrounded by a green toxic aura. If you don't have the radiation shield upgrade for your suit, you’re going to have a bad time. Feed it Oca Ocas. It’s worth the hassle because it guards a Slime Key, and you need those for the late-game vaults.
The Moss Blanket: Where Things Get Lush
The Moss Blanket is my favorite zone, mostly because the music slaps, but the Gordos here are a bit more spread out.

The Honey Gordo is the big prize here. It’s perched on a ledge overlooking a flowery patch. Honey Slimes love Mint Mangos. If you pop this guy, you get another key. Most players use this key to unlock the Ancient Ruins, which is the logical next step in the "story" of the Range.
You’ll also find a Hunter Gordo in the Moss Blanket, but it’s a bit of a jerk. Hunter Slimes are naturally feral when they're Gordos. It’s tucked away in the far north of the Moss Blanket on a mushroom-covered ledge. It wants Roosters. Finding 50 meat items is always a chore compared to fruit, so I highly recommend bringing Roostros to cut that requirement in half.
The Ancient Ruins and the Glass Desert
Now we’re getting into the endgame. The Ancient Ruins only has one Gordo: the Boom Gordo. It’s located in a glass-enclosed room near the back of the ruins. It’s loud. It’s explosive. It wants Briar Hens. Popping this one is mandatory if you want to find the portal to the Glass Desert.
Once you hit the Glass Desert, the rules change a bit. You have to deal with solar flares and the need for Ancient Water to revive the flora.
- The Dervish Gordo: Sits on a high ledge in the Desert. It wants Prickle Pears. Pop it for a key.
- The Tangle Gordo: This one is sneaky. It’s hidden behind a tower. Feed it Painted Hens.
- The Mosaic Gordo: Located inside a cave at the very back of the Desert. It needs Silver Parsnips.
- The Rock/Crystal/Quantum Gordos: You’ll find various others scattered in secret corners, often guarding "Slime Gates" that lead to treasure pods containing rare decorations or blueprints.
The Quantum Gordo in the Ancient Ruins (technically on the periphery) is a nightmare for some because it "phases." It doesn't actually move, but it looks like it's vibrating out of existence. Feed it Phase Lemons. Pro tip: you don't have to shoot the lemons at it; you just have to drop them near its mouth while it's in its solid phase.
Misconceptions About Gordo Snaring
Later in the game, you can actually create your own Gordos using the Gordos Snare (a piece of Slime Science equipment). I see players getting frustrated because they put a high-tier bait in a Novice Snare and get a Pink Gordo instead of a Gold one.
The quality of the snare matters.
A Novice Snare is basically a lottery. A Master Snare is a guarantee. If you want a Gold Gordo on your ranch—which is the ultimate flex—you need a Master Snare and a Gilded Ginger. Gilded Gingers are the rarest item in the game; only two sprout in the Glass Desert every day, and they make a specific "chime" sound when you’re near them.
Don't waste your Ginger on a low-tier snare. You will regret it.
Why You Should Care About the Rewards
Popping gordo slimes in slime rancher isn't just about the "pop." It’s about the crates. The crates that drop alongside the slimes often contain high-tier ingredients for Slime Science, like Indigonium or Wild Honey.

- Farm favorites: Stop carrying 50 of a random food. Build a garden specifically for Heart Beets, Mint Mangos, and Silver Parsnips. It turns a ten-minute feeding chore into a thirty-second burst.
- Listen for the "vibe": When you're near a Gordo you haven't found yet, the music doesn't necessarily change, but the ambient sound does. There's a low, wet "thump-thump" sound that Gordos make. If you hear it through a wall, look for a hidden path or a ledge above you.
