Fierce Deity Mask TOTK: What Most People Get Wrong About This Set

Fierce Deity Mask TOTK: What Most People Get Wrong About This Set

Honestly, the first time you see the Fierce Deity Mask in Tears of the Kingdom, it hits different. If you played Majora’s Mask back in the day, you know this isn't just another piece of headgear. It’s a legacy. But in TOTK, getting your hands on it—and actually making it useful—is a whole different beast than just handing over some masks to a kid on the moon.

Most people think you need an Amiibo to get it. You don't.

While the Majora’s Mask Link Amiibo definitely makes things faster (and lets you skip the legwork), Nintendo actually tucked the entire set into the base game. It's hidden behind a series of riddles left by a legendary bandit named Misko. If you want that godlike power without spending extra cash on plastic figurines, you've got some cave diving to do.

The Skull Lake Run: Where the Mask Hides

You’ll find the fierce deity mask totk location way up in the northeast corner of Akkala. Look for Skull Lake. It’s impossible to miss on the map because, well, it’s shaped like a giant skull.

There are two "eyes" in this lake. One is a hole in the ground that leads straight into the Depths. Ignore that one unless you’re looking for a dark, scary time. You want the other eye—the one that sits on top of a massive stone pillar.

Getting up there is the annoying part.

You can try to climb it, but unless you have three wheels of stamina and some slip-resistant gear, you’re probably going to fall. The "pro" way to do it is to glide down from a Sky Island or launch from the Ulri Mountain Skyview Tower. Once you’re over the pillar, just drop straight into the hole.

At the bottom, you’ll hit water. Swim to the shore and you’ll find yourself in the Skull Lake Cave. It’s dark, it’s damp, and it’s filled with Stalkoblins that won't leave you alone. You don't actually have to fight them all, but there is a Stalnox waiting further in.

If you’re low on hearts, just run.

There’s a high rock platform in the center of the main chamber. Climb up there, open the chest, and the mask is yours. It gives you an immediate Attack Up boost, which is basically the gold standard for combat in this game.

Completing the Look: Misko’s Treasure Quest

The mask is great, but it’s only 1/3 of the puzzle. To unlock the real potential, you need the armor and the boots.

Misko's riddles are kinda vague, but here's the breakdown:

  • The Armor: This one is hidden in the Akkala Citadel Ruins. Look for a small crawlspace in a room at the southwest corner of the ruins. Drop down the hole, and the chest is right there. Watch out for the Gloom Spawn nearby; they’re a total vibe killer.
  • The Boots: These are inside the Ancient Tree Stump, which is north of Mount Daphnes in Hyrule Field. You have to climb down into the stump and burn through some vines to find the path. It’s vertical, it’s leafy, and it’s way easier than the Skull Lake pillar.

The Hidden Reward

Once you have all three pieces, don't just go off and start hitting Lynels. Go back to Cephla Lake Cave—the place where you likely started the quest. If you walk into the back room wearing the full set, a secret stone door will literally slide open for you.

Inside is the Fierce Deity Sword.

It’s a massive two-handed blade with a base power of 38. It looks incredible. It feels powerful. But here is the catch: it breaks. Just like every other cool thing in Hyrule, it has the durability of a wet paper towel if you use it on every red Bokoblin you see.

The Grind: Upgrading the Mask

This is where the game gets real. A base defense of 3 isn't going to save you from a Silver Mane Lynel. To make the fierce deity mask totk viable for the late game, you need to visit the Great Fairies.

The upgrade path is brutal.

You’re going to need Hinox parts. Lots of them. Toenails, teeth, and guts. But the real kicker? Dragon parts. Specifically from Dinraal, the fire dragon that circles the northern part of the map.

To fully max out the mask, you’ll need:

  1. Level 1: 5 Hinox Toenails and 1 Dinraal’s Scale.
  2. Level 2: 5 Hinox Teeth and 1 Dinraal’s Claw.
  3. Level 3: 2 Hinox Guts and 1 Shard of Dinraal’s Fang.
  4. Level 4: 2 Lynel Guts and 1 Dinraal’s Horn.

Basically, you’re going to spend a lot of time standing on a dragon’s back waiting for the cooldown timer so you can shoot another horn. It’s tedious, honestly. But at Level 4, each piece has 20 defense. That’s 60 total defense with a Level 3 Attack Up bonus.

Is it better than the Barbarian Set?

Mechanically, they do the same thing: more damage. However, the Fierce Deity set bonus is "Charge Attack Stamina Up," which makes those big spinning sword moves cost less energy. Plus, let’s be real, you look like a celestial god of destruction instead of a guy wearing a dead bird.

What to do if you lose your gear

If you accidentally sell your mask or break your sword, don't panic. You don't have to restart the quest.

Head to the Depths and find a Bargainer Statue. These creepy stone faces deal in Poes, and once you’ve "discovered" a legendary item in the world, they’ll sell it back to you. The sword costs 160 Poes, which is a steal considering how hard it is to find the first time.

You can even buy duplicates if you want to display one in your house in Tarry Town.

Actionable Next Steps

If you're ready to hunt this down, start by heading to the Foothill Stable. Just north of it is the Cephla Lake Cave where the two brothers (Domidak and Prissen) are hanging out. Feeding their dog some meat will lead you to the first chest that kicks off the "Misko’s Treasure: The Fierce Deity" side quest.

Don't bother trying to find the locations without the quest active in your log; it’s much more satisfying to follow the hints. Once you have the mask, prioritize hunting Dinraal early. Dragons follow a set path now, not a schedule, so if you see him, drop everything and grab a scale. You'll thank yourself later when you're trying to hit that first upgrade.
