Demi Human Boc Questline: What Most People Get Wrong

Demi Human Boc Questline: What Most People Get Wrong

Finding a friendly face in the Lands Between is rare. Finding one that doesn't eventually try to peel your skin off or sacrifice you to an Outer God is even rarer. That’s basically why everyone loves Boc the Seamster. He’s this tiny, anxious demi-human who just wants to fix your clothes and feel like he belongs somewhere. But honestly, if you aren't careful, you will absolutely ruin his life while trying to "help" him.

Most players stumble into the demi human boc questline by accident while wandering around Limgrave. You hear a high-pitched voice calling out from the bushes near the Agheel Lake North Site of Grace. It’s a literal talking tree. Or rather, it’s Boc, who’s been magically pranked and turned into a shrub. Give him a good whack—just one, don't kill the guy—and he pops back into his true form.

He’s pathetic. He’s sweet. And he’s the only NPC who will call you "Lord" without a hint of irony or a hidden agenda.

Where to Find Boc (and How Not to Miss Him)

You've gotta follow a specific trail of breadcrumbs to keep him moving through the world. If you progress too far into the game without checking in, he might just vanish or get stuck in a state of perpetual sadness.

  1. Limgrave (The Bush): East of the telescope near Agheel Lake North. This is where he gives you some mushrooms as a "thank you" for not leaving him as a perennial.
  2. Coastal Cave: He’s slumped over by the Site of Grace here. He tried to go back to his cave to get his things and got thrashed by the other demi-humans.
  3. Liurnia (Lake-Facing Cliffs): After you beat Godrick, he shows up right at the start of the next zone. This is where he starts offering to tailor your gear for free.
  4. East Raya Lucaria Gate: He moves here as you push through Liurnia.
  5. Altus Highway Junction: Once you reach the plateau, he's waiting. This is usually where he asks if he can call you "My Lord." It unlocks the My Lord gesture, which is actually one of the best animations in the game for feeling like a total boss.
  6. East Capital Rampart: This is his final spot in Leyndell. It's also where the quest gets dangerous for his mental health.

The Sewing Needle Dilemma

Inside that Coastal Cave in Limgrave, you have to fight two Demi-Human Chiefs. They aren't particularly hard, but they’re aggressive. They drop the Sewing Needle and Tailoring Tools. Giving these to Boc is what gives him a purpose. Later on, you’ll find the Gold Sewing Needle at the Church of Vows (the place with the giant turtle pope).

Hold onto that gold needle. You can't even give it to him until you own a piece of "legendary" armor—specifically the stuff you buy from Enia at the Roundtable Hold using Boss Remembrances. Think Radahn’s armor or Rennala’s robes. Once you have a piece of that gear in your inventory, the dialogue option to give him the gold needle finally appears.

The Rebirth Trap: Why Larval Tears Are Bad News

This is where most people mess up. Once you're in Leyndell, Boc starts talking about how ugly he is. He’s obsessed with the idea of being "reborn" by Rennala. If you’ve been hoarding Larval Tears for your own stat respecs, you might feel generous and give him one.

Do not do this.

If you give Boc a Larval Tear, he travels to the Raya Lucaria Grand Library. You’ll find him there standing next to Rennala, but he’s been transformed into a human. He looks "normal," but he won't speak. He just stands there, hollowed out. If you rest at a Site of Grace and come back, he’s dead.

The lore here is pretty grim. Rennala’s rebirth process is flawed unless you have the Great Rune of the Unborn. Since Boc doesn't have it, his "perfect" human form is essentially a death sentence. It’s a classic FromSoftware gut-punch: you tried to be nice, and you accidentally killed the only person who liked you.

How to Save Him (The "You're Beautiful" Ending)

To get the "good" ending for the demi human boc questline, you need a very specific item: the Prattling Pate "You're Beautiful." You find this in the Hermit Village on Mt. Gelmir. It’s sitting on a corpse on a porch. To get there, you have to loop all the way around the Volcano Manor area, past the Magma Wyrm, and through the village guarded by a Demi-Human Queen.

Once you have it, go back to Boc in Leyndell. Do not give him the Larval Tear. Instead, stand right in front of him and use the Prattling Pate. The item will literally shout "You're beautiful!" in a gravelly, ethereal voice.

After the audio plays, talk to him. He’ll ask if you were the one who said it. Tell him yes. He’ll realize that he doesn't need to change his body to have value. It’s surprisingly wholesome for a game where you spend most of your time being stepped on by giants. He stays at the East Capital Rampart and continues to serve as your royal seamster.

A Note on the End-Game

There is some debate about what happens to Boc after you trigger the endgame events (specifically after Maliketh). Some players report he stays put; others say he disappears when the capital changes. To be safe, finish his dialogue and get your tailoring done before you finish Crumbling Farum Azula.

Why Does This Quest Matter?

Look, tailoring in Elden Ring isn't exactly a deep mechanic. It usually just lets you remove capes to save a tiny bit of weight or change the aesthetic. You can even do it yourself at a Site of Grace for 500 runes.

But Boc does it for free.

More importantly, his questline is one of the few that deals with self-acceptance rather than just "go kill this guy" or "bring me this eyeball." It’s a bit of soul in a very bleak world. If you’re going for a specific character build or just want to feel like a true Elden Lord with a loyal squire, keeping Boc alive is a must.

Actionable Steps for Your Playthrough

  • Go to Mt. Gelmir early: Don't wait until Boc asks for the Larval Tear to go find the Prattling Pate. If you trigger the dialogue about him wanting to be reborn and then leave to find the item, some players report he can disappear or the quest can glitch. Get the "You're Beautiful" pate as soon as you reach Altus.
  • Check your inventory for Boss Armor: You need at least one piece of alterable Shardbearer armor (like Radahn's Lion Armor) to trigger the Gold Sewing Needle dialogue.
  • Talk to Melina: At the East Raya Lucaria Gate and a few other spots, you can actually "Talk to Melina" while resting. She has unique dialogue about Boc that adds a lot of flavor to his backstory.
  • Don't forget the gesture: Make sure you accept his offer to be your vassal at the Altus Highway Junction to get that "My Lord" gesture. It’s a permanent unlock for your character.
