Choosing a Team on Pokemon Go: What Most People Get Wrong

Choosing a Team on Pokemon Go: What Most People Get Wrong

You’ve finally hit level 5. You tap a gym, and suddenly, three legendary birds are staring you down while Professor Willow asks you to make a choice that feels way more permanent than it actually is. Honestly, choosing a team on Pokemon Go is the first real "adult" decision the game throws at you.

It's easy to panic. You might think, "Wait, does Team Valor get stronger Charizards?" or "Is Team Mystic actually smarter?"

Spoiler: No.

But that doesn't mean the choice is meaningless. Your team color defines who you’ll be sitting next to at 2:00 AM in a dark parking lot trying to take down a Tier 5 Raid boss. It determines which colored gyms you can actually stay in to earn those sweet, sweet PokeCoins. Let's break down how you actually make this call without regretting it three months from now.

The Three Factions: Vibe Check

Basically, the game splits into three philosophies. They don't change your stats, but they definitely change the community you’re joining.

Team Instinct (Yellow)
Spark is the leader here. He’s the guy who probably drinks too much iced coffee and trusts his gut. Instinct is the "underdog" team. If you join yellow, you’re signing up for a life of being outnumbered, but there’s a weird pride in that. Instinct players are usually the most chill because they’re used to their gyms getting flipped in ten minutes. Their mascot is Zapdos.

Team Mystic (Blue)
Led by Blanche. This is the most popular team globally, and it’s not even close. If you like the color blue or you just want to be on the "winning" side of most territory wars, this is usually the default. Blanche is all about wisdom and evolution. It’s the "analytical" choice. Their mascot is Articuno.

Team Valor (Red)
Candela leads the red squad. This team is about raw power and training. If you’re the type of player who cares about "hundo" IVs and Max CP more than anything else, you’ll fit right in here. They have a bit of a reputation for being the most competitive. Their mascot is Moltres.

How Do You Choose a Team on Pokemon Go Without Messing Up?

The most important thing to do is look at your map. Seriously. Open the app and look at the gyms nearby.

If every single gym in your neighborhood is Blue, joining Team Mystic means you’ll have plenty of places to drop your Pokemon. But it also means you might struggle to find a gym you can actually attack to earn XP.

On the flip side, joining the minority team (like Instinct in a sea of Blue) means you’ll always have something to fight. The downside? Your Pokemon will probably be kicked out of the gym before they can even earn their first 5 coins.

Think About Your Friends

This is the big one. Pokemon Go is inherently social. If your best friend is on Team Valor and you pick Team Mystic, you two can never hold a gym together. You’ll be rivals. You can still do raids together, sure, but you won't get that "Team Contribution" bonus of extra Premier Balls at the end of the raid.

If you want to play with people, pick their color. If you want to annoy them and kick them out of gyms every morning, pick a different one.

The Myth of "Team Bonuses"

Back in 2016, there were tons of rumors that Team Instinct hatched better eggs or Team Valor had higher attack stats.

None of that is true. The only mechanical difference is the appraisal dialogue. When you ask your leader to check your Pokemon's stats, Spark, Blanche, and Candela use different words, but the star rating system remains identical. 15/15/15 is a Hundo regardless of whether a guy in a yellow hoodie or a woman in a red coat tells you about it.

What if You Hate Your Choice?

The "Team Medallion" exists. But it’s a stingy item.

You have to go into the shop and drop 1,000 PokeCoins to buy it. Since you can only earn 50 coins a day for free (if you’re lucky), that’s twenty days of perfect gym defending just to change your shirt color.

Also, Niantic only lets you use one every 365 days. If you switch to Valor today and realize your local community is actually a bunch of jerks, you’re stuck with them for a full year.

The "Local Meta" Strategy

If you really want to optimize, talk to people at a local Raid Hour. Ask them what the local "discord" or "Campfire" group looks like. In some cities, there are literal gentlemen's agreements between teams.

"Mystic takes the park during the day, Valor takes it after 8 PM."

It sounds nerdy because it is. But if you join the team that’s currently being "bullied" in your area, you might find the game a lot more frustrating.

Practical Steps for Your Decision

  1. Check the Gyms: Do a quick drive or walk around your three most-visited areas. Which color is dominant?
  2. Survey the Squad: Ask your IRL friends or family who play. Joining the same team makes the game 100% more fun.
  3. Pick for the Leader: If you don't care about the meta, just pick based on who you want to see on your screen every time you appraise a catch.
  4. Don't Overthink It: At the end of the day, you're catching digital monsters. The rivalry is mostly just flavor.

Once you’ve made your choice, go to your nearest gym, tap the icon, and commit. Just remember: if you pick Instinct, buy some extra Revives. You’re gonna need ‘em.
