You’re standing on Palmorae Beach, the sun is setting, and there's a guy named Garini looking absolutely stressed out. If you’ve played The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, you know exactly what’s coming next. It’s the botw a fragmented monument shrine quest. Honestly, it’s one of those missions that sounds easy on paper but ends up being a total headache if you don’t know where to look.
Most people just wander around the sand for forty minutes until they give up and check a map. I've been there.

Starting the Hunt at Palmorae Ruins
To even get this quest moving, you need the Camera Rune. No camera, no quest. Garini won’t even give you the time of day otherwise. You’ll find him hanging out near some ruins east of Lurelin Village. He’s obsessed with this stone monument that got shattered during an earthquake. Basically, he needs you to find three missing shards and take photos of them.
The trick? These fragments glow with an eerie blue light at night.
If you’re trying to find them during the day, you’re playing on hard mode for no reason. Just sit by a fire, wait until nightfall, and the glow will practically scream at you.
Where the Shards Are Actually Hiding
The first fragment is literally right behind Garini. Well, slightly to the east among some palm trees. It’s so close you’ll feel a bit silly for missing it.
The second one is a bit more of a walk. Head west along the beach toward those crates and barrels. It’s tucked away in the rocks. People often walk right past it because it blends into the shadows of the cliffside.
The third one is the real kicker. You have to run all the way to the tip of Soka Point. That’s the long, thin sandbar that looks like a finger pointing out into the ocean. It’s sitting right there under a palm tree at the very end.
- Fragment 1: Near the trees, east of the monument.
- Fragment 2: West end of the beach, hidden by some rocks/crates.
- Fragment 3: The very tip of Soka Point (the "finger" of the beach).
Solving the Riddle (Don't Overthink It)
Once you bring the photos back to Garini, he deciphers the text. It says: "When the two find their place and kneel in reverence, the shrine will reveal itself."
This is where the frustration peaks for a lot of players. I’ve seen people try to place barrels on the pedestals. I’ve seen people try to drop two different types of fruit. I even saw one guy on Reddit try to blow up two remote bombs at the same time.
It’s way simpler than that.
You just need to stand on one of the glowing floor switches and crouch. Use the left stick to click down and kneel. Garini is a smart guy—once he sees you do it, he’ll run over to the other pedestal and do the same.
Boom. The Kah Yah Shrine rises out of the sand.

The Quick Thinking Trial
The shrine itself is called Kah Yah Shrine, and the subtitle is "Quick Thinking." It’s a puzzle involving moving platforms and barrels. You have to carry a barrel across a moving platform while dodging obstacles.
If you want the extra treasure—and let's be real, you do—there’s a Knight’s Claymore hidden in there. You’ll need to use your bow to hit a switch while you’re moving on the platform to open the gate for the second barrel. It’s a bit of a dance, but compared to finding those shards in the dark, it’s a breeze.
Why This Quest Matters
This mission is a perfect example of why Breath of the Wild is so special. It doesn't hold your hand. It expects you to pay attention to the environment, notice the glow of the ancient stone, and realize that "kneeling" in a game means pressing the crouch button.

It’s also a great way to explore the Faron region, which is arguably the most beautiful part of the map. Lurelin Village is a vibe, and this quest gives you a reason to actually hang out there instead of just fast-traveling past it.
Actionable Tips for Completion
- Check your inventory: Make sure you have at least one open slot in your photo album. If your album is full, the game won't let you "take" the picture for the quest.
- Look for the "!" symbol: When you aim your camera at a fragment, a red exclamation mark and the text "Monument Shard" should appear. if it doesn't, you're either too far away or it's the wrong rock.
- Patience with Garini: Sometimes the NPC AI gets a bit wonky. If Garini doesn't move to the second pedestal, walk off yours and try crouching again. He usually catches on pretty fast.
If you’ve already finished this and you’re looking for the next challenge, head further south to Eventide Island. It’s the ultimate "test of skill" in this game, and it’s not far from where you’re standing right now.
Next Steps for You:
Check your Sheikah Slate to ensure you have the Camera Rune active. If not, head back to the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab and talk to Purah first. Once that's settled, warp back to the Yah Rin Shrine near Lurelin and head east to the Palmorae Ruins to knock this quest out.
