You can actually reset the stagger timer. If you hit his armor (the shell, not the maggot) while he is down, it resets the internal clock that tells him when to stand up. The strategy looks like this:

- Hit the maggot once or twice to get Soul.
- Hit the armor shell once.
- Use your Soul to heal one mask.
- Hit the armor shell again.
- Hit the maggot.
- Repeat.
By cycling between hitting the armor and hitting the maggot, you can stay in the stagger phase indefinitely. You can literally fill your entire Soul meter and heal back to full health before he ever stands up. Once you’re ready, just smack the maggot until the boss jumps to the center of the room to start his "tantrum" phase.

Every time he gets up, he goes to the middle of the arena and swings his mace wildly left and right. Shockwaves go everywhere. Falling rocks go everywhere. It looks terrifying.

Just stand in a corner. The shockwaves don't usually reach the far edges, and you only have to worry about the rocks falling from the ceiling. Or, if you’re feeling brave, stay just out of reach and blast him with Shade Soul. Since you just filled your Soul meter during the stagger loop, you can spam fireballs at him. Each hit pushes him closer to the next stagger.
He usually does this three times. After the third stagger and "tantrum," he’ll do one final jump and then smash through the floor. That’s it. You’ve won.
Misconceptions About Shadow Dashing
A lot of players think they need the Shade Cloak (the black dash) to win. While it helps, it can actually mess up your timing. If you dash through him too early, you might reappear right inside his hitbox. The standard dash is actually sufficient if your spacing is right. The trick is to wait for the apex of his jump before you move.
