Paul Bunyan - Finished?

on: July 15, 2009, 05:09:35 am
Hey everyone. This piece is for Pixel Joint's weekly challenge where you have to depict Paul Bunyan using tall pixels. (I f'ing hate tall pixel now  :yell:) Anyways, here are my wips:

Note: The shading isn't tall pixel'd yet because I just want to block out the basic shapes first. Also, first post.

I tall pixel'd everything (I hope), and changed the shading a bit.

Did a quick edit to really make it all tall pixels, you missed quite a lot.

I also did a palette edit, and removed 3 colors. Some other changes here and there.

Thanks for the edit Dr D.

Do you mind if I use those colors? I really like them  :y:

I don't care. As long as you know why I changed them to what I did.

I also forget to get the shadow on the tall pixels.

Yeah, I totally understand what you did. You got rid of the pink colors on the nose because they are very similar to the skin tones, and you used the dark/purple color from his shirt to shade the bull (shadows are supposed to be purplish/cooler anyways).

Well, here's an update:

I tried getting rid of all the shorties with skamocore's  help:

Let me know if you find any that I missed.

I just discovered I have to include a background for the challenge :/ So made a mock scene:

And the cow jumped over the moon, get it?

I think the top left is kind of empty, but I don't know what to put there. The curly things on the bottom are dust clouds, btw.

Seeing as though your character is double-pixel, I think your background should be double-pixel as well.  The dust clouds could also use some work.

I forgot to post the final image. Unfortunately, I didn't place in the challenge, but it was fun to work on this nonetheless.  :y:

Not sure if you still want to work on it, but you really went foreward with flawed lines. Pauls' pose on the bull is all wrong, it looks wrong and makes little sense. He doesn't look like he is sitting on there, rather like he is being bucked foreward awkwardly. In your initial sketch I can see you wrote "tilt back" but you didn't tilt back, and I think the problem is severe enough for the lines to be redone. Consider also the pose of his arms, they are nonsensicle. His grip on the reign is upside down, and his axe is raised for no reason. A sturdy pose would have him sitting back on the bull, a palm down grip on the strap, and a lowered axe.

Look at this girl riding a horse:
