Mockup Frenzy #5: Horrorween!

on: October 16, 2007, 12:47:48 am
Mockup Frenzy #5: Horrorween!

Resolution: 160x146
Colors: Up to 32
Theme: Horror
Start Day: October 15th, 2007
Deadline: October 31st, 2007
Notes:  Halloween is coming up, so MF5 is all about horror!  160x146 is the itsy-bitsy screen size on the Sega Game Gear, which had a lot of horror...err horrible games, at the very least.  For extra credit, which is worth nothing, pick your 32 colors from a palette of 4,4,4.  This means each of the RGB values is between 0 and 15, instead of 0 and 255!  Good luck!

Is this your first Mockup Frenzy?  Why not check out the rules & results from Mockup Frenzy #1: Mobility!, Mockup Frenzy #2: Ninjas!, Mockup Frenzy #3: GB Demakes!, and Mockup Frenzy #4: Invasion!

RESULTS:

mice, faktablad, atum, arachne:

infinity+1, atum, bengoshia, griffy6:

MaDsk8tard, Rebel-CD32, VisMaior, Darien:

Great job everybody!

Um, so I guess this means the red, green, and blue color channels are each 4 bit, yes? And by 0-15, you mean the 16 possible 4 bit values, not the actual RBG values? I'm pretty sure that's what you meant, or else we're gonna get some super dark mockups.

A quick setup in Pro Motion tells me these are the literal RBG color values allowed:

0, 16, 32, 48, 64, 80, 96, 112, 128, 144, 160, 176, 192, 208, 224, 240

yep that's exactly correct :)  in hex they would be:

00, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, A0, B0, C0, D0, E0, F0

So whichever of those floats y'all's respective boats is cool.  Just please do not use 0-15 out of 255!!

Until someone opens up one of these devices and checks the actual values of the 4 resistors, we will never know.
Even then, it depends on your monitor and your gfx card as well.

I'm just going by Promotion, I'm sure there is plenty of variance on the actual units just as mice says.  For the sake of the activity I suppose you can use either scale, but I really don't think it makes much of a difference.

Evrey color has ist own RGB triple, except now instead of 256 (0-255) possibilities for R, G, and B, each now has 16 (0-15). However, color pickers don't support color scales with a maximum of 15 so we need to map that onto the 255 scale. This can be done by multiplying (I use trick's scale because it has a maximum of 255 instead of 240) each of the values in the 0-15 scale by 17 (11 in hex). For example, we have arbitrary color (0,4,6) in the 15 scale as (0,68,102) in 255-scale RGB. In hexadecimal that 255-scale color is (00,44,66). This 16x16x16 color space gives a full palette of 4096 (16^3) colors from which you pick your 32, as opposed to the 16,777,216 (256^3) colors in the 255 scale. So our 15-scale RGB color space has the same range as the 255-scale one (min=0; max=255 after conversion because 17*15=255) but less precision of color picking because of its smaller size.

To simplify, each color's R, G, and B values should be multiples of 17. :D

bleargh!  YOU PEOPLE.  This part is optional!  Anyways, if you use Promotion, you can just set the channel depth to 4,4,4 and be done with it.  Everybody else, use multiples of 16 or 17 when selecting your colors.  IF you even want to follow this optional rule.  If this math is still blowing your mind, just use this!

While he's at it, I'd also like to know if Game Gear used a stretched (multiples of 17) or non stretched (multiples of 16) based palette, or something completely different.

I ignored the optional palette restrictions, because they confused me.  :D  10 colors.  Since it's a limited color count, I'd need to go back and optimize it, because I just color-picked based on need for this scene.

This would be a simple mystery game with arrow key movement and point-and-click interaction with various story elements.  An emphasis on mood would be critical.  For example, in this part of the game, you have no flashlight, and you're walking through the woods until you come upon this scene.  That's all I have for now.

Yeah, the next line would be "This didn't happen too long ago..." or maybe just "Holy shit".

But the idea for this scene, which I think would be cool, is not being able to see your character at all.  You move and you see the background move and nothing else up until this scene.

Here's mine so far. I went with multiples of 16 for the palette. I still need to work on the tiles a bit, like making the corners more rounded. I also want to add a tree or something like that.

Edit: Now the sprites should all be using the same 16 color palette.

RE: my long and informative post on how the GG works...

hmmm... yes... it was a looong time ago... and my memory probably fails me... off the top of my head.

you have 2 pallettes of 16 colors. (4,4,4 [as gone into exhaustive detail already])

#1 Pallette is your sprite pallette
#2 Pallette is your background pallette

(or the other way around)

1 bank of 256 characters (8x8's) - backgrounds. (and font)
1 bank of 256 characters (8x8's) - ALL your sprites

I'll stand corrected if that's incorrect... but like I said, it was a long time ago.

I've dug this up from the archive... tis genuine GameGear art... so it should have all those limitations mentioned... (haven't got all the character data unfortunatly for the back grounds, but this example may help)

Hope that clears that up!??

:)

very WIP at this point, but the concept:
you're brother has run out into the woods, and you must find him before he is killed by (insert evil monster). The timer goes up and it's only function is to provide a player with time records and stuff. the other bar is the younger brother's life bar.
I'm going to add a little icon eventually (maybe like a shoe or something) with the intent of making it seem like you gather clues to find him faster. also, there will be an inventory, including items like a whistle, a stick and a flashlight

probably a lot deeper than it should be at this point. haha.

Remade, and its a WIP

Story line: A camp leader goes outside to the docks in search of a lost camp member, he slips off the dock into the lake where jason is there waiting for him. It was a trap! You must try to run through waist deep water away from jason before he catches you!

Will add fight with longcat scene later, kinda like rpg-ish.
Note: I probably won't finish this.... I uh, usually never finish any piece.

This is my first contest and the third topic I've ever replied to. I am kinda new to the pixel art thing, so I decided to start off easy and make a simple Halloween-styled puzzle game. In the game, you stack the shapes and try to get three in a row, making them disappear. Then the above blocks drop down, creating combos and so on.

I followed the color limit thing and all of the colors are multiples of 17...or so I think. Correct me if I'm wrong. :)

Edit Here is my second entry.

AUGHHHH! INDEX ART! :'(

Atum...both your pieces have quite a lot going on, dont put yourself down so much!.
That Jason looks pretty good, everything that's in there looks great, it looks like it's just about to show it's best and it needs just a liiiiitlle nudge to get there...so it's kinda sad to see you drop out on it...however, I understand when as an artist you just dont feel your piece gets there.....

.....plus I really really like that face of the mask's in the new one (something about the shadows on the forehead and the face painting just gets me) so finish whatever piece you feel the most like finishing, but promiss me you wont put yourself down like that next time!

This is bizarre. On the 15th of October, my friend and I started working on a little Halloween platform game for the Amiga. I've been drawing blocks and sprites over the last few days for it, then I noticed this topic on here. Now, the old OCS/ECS Amigas (Amiga 500 for example) used the same 4096 colour palette as the GameGear, with colour values from 0-15, so all my graphics are already using the specified colour rules. All the sprites are in multiples of 8, so everything shown in my mockup is possible on a Game Gear, and I've drawn them using only 16 colours. When I transferred the image to my PC's LCD monitor it looks a bit dark, but on a PAL CRT monitor they look bright and crisp.

Since this is going to actually be a real game, and I started drawing it before I knew about this thread (even though I started on the same day that the competition started) I'm not going to enter, but I'll post my mockup anyway.

The finished Amiga version will have a larger screen of course, but I managed to squeeze a few things into this little pic. You play a girl dressed in a sexy witch costume who has to battle nasties, collect candy, and rescue the children.

Well, I hate posting WIPs, but I'm pretty sure that I'll give up if I don't.  I'm very rusty and tiles were always a weakness of mine to begin with.

I'd appreciate heavy critique and any and all of this, in particular the face, gun, and seats.  All my tiles always come out so bland.

The floorboards are not tiled, just trying out stuff to see what works.

In my monitor is really hard to read, I though it was a naked man o.O but he seems to be wearing a jacket at x2

Atum:  That 3rd WIP is really awesome!  But I think the light in the doorway is almost too bright and too big for the doorway.
You got that rainbow feel... but the rainbow has a beard - Cream

Thanks Atum, your second attempt a huge improvement in color and composition. Keep it up!

Griffy, that second one truly is terrifying :^))

WIP4. Gonna keep the small head. Up to 24 colors so far. Not gonna worry about separate sprite/background palettes. Sentence fragments. Weeee.

maybe make her mouth a bit smaller by 1 pixel? :o

The same mistake twice is a bad habit.
The same mistake three or more times is a motif.
