Big WIP, supposed to be a ninja in a supermarket or something, I don't really know yet, suggestions on where it should be and crits if you have any.

EDIT: I have no idea what I was on when I was shading and making the body.

http://www.entertheninja.com/ninja_fact/weapons.php

since this is for a videogame mockup, there's little point mentioning that this site is terribly inaccurate, but if anyone is looking for a history lesson, look elsewhere......still, it has some fun stuff.

I have some ideas, but with classes being crazy like they've been and still no mouse :( idk if i'll have any time.

The same mistake twice is a bad habit.
The same mistake three or more times is a motif.

Here's my entry so far, got a little more to go on this before it's fully done, but I can at least explain what I'm thinking.

So in my ninja game, "A Business Time To Kill" the entire thing takes place in a giant office building type place, a la high rise building style.

So, in it you can play either the bad guys (shown above) in a splinter cell style game, and your goal is to off as many office employees without getting caught. In this side of things, you're invincible, because let's face it, ninjas are just that. However, getting caught can cause various things, such as calling up the Business Ninja, who is the protagonist of the good side. If you're caught by him, he will almost definitely kill you, a risk you take messing with a master ninja. At some point you could become so bad you could kill him,but needless to say I haven't gotten that far into the thought process.

The UI would act somewhat like a point-and-click interface, in that certain areas will have special events you can perform, such as taking out the lights in that mockup above. Obv. the more stealthy you are the better the kill (which reminds me, I should add a point ticker to that screen)

In any case, more on the other side when/if I make another mockup. Enjoy this for now.

Alright, did a few things here and there... added AA, made it look not like total crap(The face, anyway). Still though, any suggestions on where he should be(I'm still thinking store, an adult video store would be pretty funny aswell)?

Quark, make that game, nao.

EDIT:

Okay cool, this is looking awesome.

I don't think that's allowed KAT. The consensus here is that we feel artists should try work from the ground up, despite there SUPPOSED poor ability. It's ok to reference from professional, or other sprites(though I'd never consider mk professional...blegh), it's just that when a person does this for a certain amount of time, they develop bad styling habits that turn out very hard to drop in their later years. I don't think you'll be disqualified, but instead, I just think that your current piece won't be accepted into the competition.

good luck with your other future ninja piece!

Hello Everyone.

Early WIP and uberly cluttered

I've planned to do a traditional Platformer Mockup in which you play as NONAMEYETSORRY:(, the Ninja-Dog,
fighting against evil cat-pirates who infiltrated his motherland and captured his beloved friend Poodelina and her precious Golden Dog Biscuit. (to rule the world, I guess..)
Well yeah, thats what I had in mind..

Hi guys,

as a long time lurker, I finally decided to join the pixelation fun. I sure can learn a lot from the members around here.

so here`s my wip for the ninja mockup. basically just a shinobi style clone, jump`n run while slicing enemies...no real backstory yet
there are way to many similar colours which i have to clean up, the lighting doesnt feel right, so i hope you guys can point me to the right direction.

thx for c&c

Cool. Though it would seem more in line with each species that the cats were agile silent ninjas (who hate water), and the dogs were swashbuckling pilferers of the high seas (with their buried treasure). Just throwing ideas out there.

@CroM: Lookin pretty sweet! Is that a naked women in the silhouette? Awesome! tree in the background looks unbalanced (branch gets thicker towards its end). Background in general seems too crisp and flat, if it's meant to be misty then you'll need more sort of gradients to show where the mist is thicker (towards the ground) I think.

Update:

Got rid of the fat look completely, still have no clue on what to do for the scene.

KAT: If I may give some advice on your piece, try to go learn some basic perspective, this would help your piece alot(http://www.olejarz.com/arted/perspective/ Some one-point perspective). The water looks very odd, the best game I can suggest for water examples is the Metal Slug series(They're also pretty good with skies, most images on google are jpegs, so my suggestion would to be to go get the rom and emulator, use google to find this, don't really think I can give them out on this site, so I won't).  For the overall piece, you need more contrast and just better colors to fit the scene, so go google some stuff for reference and just look at other pixel art.

Kren: Looks great, could use some more dithering in places(Aswell as some good old Anti-Aliasing), add some more clouds, loving those and the ninja I think would look better looking more realistic, since everything else does. Oh also, the bamboo looks a bit odd, with it going from a fat bamboo to a small one.

AlienQuark, maybe you should give the ninja longer legs, arms and torso so he looks more like the guy below him? He looks a bit like a child in a ninja costume at the moment. I love the concept, though.

CroM, awesome stuff so far! :0'

bengoshia, the proportions of your ninja could use some work. He needs longer arms, shorter thighs, longer shins and broader shoulders, and his right arm (our left) would look more comfortable if you bent it the other way. You also have some very similar grays and the green tinted gray along with the blue highlight seems a bit random.

Dunno If I should consider it complete. BTW bengoshia, the white thing in the top is suposed to be a mountain, after your post I added more details =).

CroM: I really like the environment, but in some parts the wood looks flat.

bengoshia: the hands positions make him look odd, I like how the face looks.

Earthpainting: You should add an enemy, That mockup looks really good, probably add more details to the sky like a moon and some stars :)..

@AlienQuark: if you provide all the graphics and it stays a minigame i could set something up in flash, looks definitelly like a fun game.

@Earthpainting: very nice

@Arachne: i love your stuff, especially the dithered monster pieces...

the hand and arm of your ninja could be more defined, nice background

CroM - I like this very very much.  Your ninja is a little hard to see; while it is realistic of course (ninjas do not like to be seen!!) it weakens the piece a little.  Darker clothes or higher contrast might put that finishing touch.  The rope really catches my eye too, but if that is an important game thing you may want it that way.  The ninja stars look too close together to me.

Arachne - AWESOME :)  Some thoughts:
1 - The paper windows are very bright - combined with the dark slats dividing them, its making the background very high contrast and somewhat distracting (at least to me).  As I'm looking at it again though I think it may just be the wood needs to be a bit lighter...
2 - Robot Santa is awesome but is so thin in parts, a bit more of an outline here and there might help him read a bit better at 1x (looks fab at 2x tho)
3 - Ninja looks a bit offbalance to me, and its not clear whether he is in motion or not, pose is slightly ambiguous
Took me a while to find these things though, great job!

Earthpainting - great colors, great contrast, very action-packed.  Maybe add an enemy?  Even a dead one would help keep the piece from being too sterile.  welcome!

Kren - frickin SWEET.  Poses and outlines/AA need some love, but this has a TON of potential.  Don't sell it short!!

So here's a wip, the game is where you are a chef and a painting of an old master chef tells you how to cook stuff.

EDIT: Yikes, I couldn't find enough time...  But excited for No. 3  :y:

This is great. As an game idea. It's not so well visualised. But it's funny - off the wall... like that one that ALIENQUARK did... it's quirky. Not that the others aren't good, I just think a lot are a bit derivative as far as games go... (obviously I can see that Joe's game is Cookie Mama so I guess that's derivative also - but it is novel- "What ninja do in their spare time, hobbies etc..." and off course they DO have to eat!)

Well done Joe, I think you should finish it off.

Arachne, I love the blurred floor reflection.
CroM, you can barely notice the second, lighter shade in lit surface of the building above the entrance. I'd make it stand out a little bit more or remove it. Bloody excellent piece though.

After seeing Joe's entry and Baccaman's comment, I think it'd be awesome to have a ninja game with Ninja's tackling everyday obstacles... in ninja-like ways.

This game (and all these games) would obviously take place at 1000x the speed of light.
Due to the known fact that ninjas are that fast.

But seriously, I like the idea behind this.
The ninja looks good at the moment, the hat could do with some work though.
His left arm is wonky at the moment, could be because of the hand.
I think it too could use perhaps a movement trail right now kinda looks like he's tossing it backwards.
And if that's the case then his movement trail should be the opposite way.

Welp that wraps up this activity!  WIPpers you are welcome to finish your pieces, I will update them when I'm able (or you can overwrite the images in those URLs).  See you all at MF3!
