It looks like color-reduced art with a wee bit of touch-up, but still not in some places (where some dithering would've been nice, but now it's just a bunch of garbled stuff :O)

That's probably because I think it IS a colour reduced version either from Atari ST version or PC version.. but there are so many versions out there, EGA, CGA, VGA, Amiga, Atari ST (  on which the Guybrush sprite looks quite a bit different) that I can't really put my finger on which one should be considered the original or the definite version.

I'd suggest the 256 color version... PC preferably...

I loved Monkey island... terrific artwork... superb script... crazy puzzles...

what ever happened to these kind of cerebral games that were genuinely entertaining and funny... we used to group around a single monitor at lunch at the office and all of us would play it... as a kind of group session... brilliant... just brilliant.

"I am rubber you are glue" - classic!

lol

Anyway... for art critique... I'm not so sure... my memories vague but I do recall they were painted and scanned backdrops... certainly the characters were pixelled but as for the rest... I'm not so sure.

[edit]
... but then again...

these aren't...

or certainly pixel painted?

MI 1 is all Deluxepaint. MI 2 has handdrawn, scanned and computercoloured backgrounds.
Another Lucasfilm Games game which would be easier to CC would be Loom, which has some really really nice EGA graphics (which also is the original and definite version)
There are no ugly colours, only ugly combinations of colours.

http://home.comcast.net/~ervind/threepmarl.html warning: lots of screenshots

In that link there are a few comparisons between the different versions of MI1 and i think we would want to crit the high color one becuase it looks
nicer, but 32 looks okay too.

That site has alot of Lucas art stuff, including a higher color version of loom.
Modern artists are told that they must create something totally original-or risk being called "derivative".They've been indoctrinated with the concept that bad=good. The effect is always the same: Meaningless primitivism

sharprm: Awesome site. ;) Looking at it makes me think that it'd be quite difficult to talk about one version alone without making constantly references to other versions, so maybe ALL versions should be discussed as a whole.

Hmm, StarCraft ist mostly prerendered. I don't think it's suited for a pixel cc

Midnight Wanderers and Chariot together (have same style)

I think all these games are very pretty and impressive, but let's be honest here, most of us here dont really know how to animate a full character OR make a varied working tileset.

we dont need to be looking at the highest acomplishments in pixelart, we need to get to the basics and Star Ocean Blue is so succint and so down to the basics in several presentations in both the tiling and the animation that it's just begging to be CCd

Plus, how many other games have the emulator that allow us to look at the tilesets and see clearly how each tile was used in each screen? Not only that, Star Ocean Blue even has the tilesets organized in a way in which it's easy to recognize how they would actually be tiled

Oh, and since so much time passed I would also suggest Trip World...maybe we can do a two-birds-one-stone thing, analyzing 2 good GB games that stick to the principles. One top down, one Sidescroller

EDIT: hey mods, somethings awry about the previous post...some code line might not've been finished correctly because when this post loaded it was merging with the previous one...and I didnt even use any code.

Probably your page didn't load properly, since this thread is image heavy and all.
