current standings:

Challenge 3: Cultured Females
Description:
Create an idle animation of a strange cultured female.
Restrictions / Rules / Guidelines:
-Canvas size = 128 x 128
-There is NO frame count. However many you want
-Must be of a strange cultured female, ex: Dragon princess, dinosaur queen, android, mermaid (in other words, no regular cultures like japanese, french, german, etc. A new different culture, but has to still resemble a female human. With things like a mermaid, true the legs are replaced by a tail, but it is still recognizeable as a female human.)
-32 colour max. Pick your own pallete
-Must be of an idle animation
-No detailed backgrounds, and No transparency. Use 1 of your 32 colours as a solid background colour.
-Do not post in any other forums, keep your image to yourself until i post the duels
-Once you submit there is no changes / alterations allowed to be made after you submit.
Time:
2 weeks.
With these past 2 challenges, everyone has still complained about being pressed for time, so we will keep it at 2 weeks again.
Submitting:
-Do not post your image in this thread. PM me your entry.
-Again, I want 2 separate images. The first image is of your animated female. The second image, I want all your frames as stills. So however many frames all on 1 sheet, not animated.
Judging:
-Character design / originality
-Difficulty of character, ex: cartoony VS real, or simple shapes VS folds in clothes and muscle movement
-How fluid the animation is
-Personality of character, ex: is it a plain breathing motion, or does your character have something special in the idle animation that gives it its own personality
Deadline:
Wednesday, March14 - 7am GMT
(Find out the time conversion for your timezone)

If there are any questions feel free to ask, and ill answer them.
Best of luck to everyone
hopefully everyone will finish this round and understand the rules better.

Rules easy to understand for me. I just hope everyone here has some type of means to animate something. I have a good idea of what I'm going to do already. However, I'm still afraid Mirre might have the slight advantage here. She's already posted a kick-ass mermaid, and is a woman herself. She has all the references she needs.
No need to fear though, I thoroughly enjoy animations, and this will surely stimulate my chili pepper...

GOOD LUCK ONE AND ALL!! LET'S SHOW THESE FOLKS THAT WE DESERVE TO BE IN THE SPOTS WE EARNED PREVIOUSLY...

So to sum the rules up, we need to make an idle animation for a fighter sprite featuring an anthromorphic (...cultured?) female character in a 128x128 canvas utilizing up to 32 colours and having no frame limit.
No backgrounds or transparent colours are allowed.
Is that correct?

Maybe there more than one people who don't know what cultured is so here's the definition :
"Well educated and with many cultural interests".

I learned a new word ; I'm becoming cultured ^^

Well if that's the definition of cultured, the examples and the criteria 'strange cultured' makes no sense.
Can somebody please give a definition of the word 'cultured' as it is used in the context with the theme?

I didn't see the need for 'cultured' there, but if it's making confusion occur even worse. Just 'female speciments of some strange culture' is the thing, I think. Flaber should verify, please.

basically he means not 100% human.  she must have some cross breed features, ie a tail, wings, claws, head-of-a-beetle etc..

i thought these rules were pretty clear, people are making a confusion over nothing.  Its not like the rules are 100% strict, even if u did make a 'normal' female i doubt you'd be disqualified.

I think he means just make a female of another fantasized culture. Such as one that is not particular of any of our worldly cultures. She must retain humanoid characteristics however, and there is to be no background, so the focus lays primarily on the character herself. She can be an alien, furry, or mutant, just as long is it exemplifies a completely different culture than the norm. The rules are extremely clear to me. I don't see what the fuss is about...

Perspective doesnt matter.
However you feel you can animate an interesting character and personality.

Somebody like flaber?

Cultured: "the sum total of ways of living built up by a group of human beings and transmitted from one generation to another."

Culture: "the behaviors and beliefs characteristic of a particular social, ethnic, or age group"

Examples:
Chinese are a culture. They have their own food, their own clothes, traditions, beliefs, lifestyle, and look about them.
Egyptian is a culture. They too have a distinct lifestyle and appearance (complimented by clothing) that defines that group of people.

Now.
When i say "Must be of a strange cultured female" I mean it to say, I want you to make a female with a strange/different culture/lifestyle than those that already exist in the world. So NO Chinese or Egyptian cultures would be allowed.
So when i suggest a dragon princess.. it could be still a full on regular female, just dressed differently in strange clothes and weird accesories. OR you could have your female with dragon wings, while still being dressed interesting.
With things like mermaids, or angels true they have body parts that arnt human, but they are still recognizeable as a female human - just with a twist. Same goes with, if you want to make an android. Yes there is techno-mechanics everywhere but it still resembles the female human.

With that said, I know for a fact someone is going to ask, "But why are mermaids allowed tails, and angels allowed wings, etc, when those arnt real human parts."
Every culture in the world today has different adaptations and characteristics that are only pertain to that culture. Ex: Mayan people are short and stalky. African and Middle East have darker skin. European have lighter skin. Vikings are stereotyped as being bigger and built. (not being racist or discriminative).
All of those cultures have their own things that apply to them.
Mermaids have their culture underwater, therefore they have adapted and grown a tail and fins.
Angels could have their culture thrive in the sky, therefore they grew wings.

Dont mix creatures with a female. Keep in mind of whatever adaptation or change you make will stay consistant with the culture you choose.

Does that make sense to you

Exactly!
Think of.. star wars for example. Those are all strange cultures - they are not cross breeds though of animals and female, like a beetle head or anything.
ex:
http://www.radiantcg.com/HiRes/Misc/Women-of-Color-Ultimate-Post.jpg

But, you need not necessarily make any adaptation for your female. Thats just a possible route. If you just dressed her up with accessories and made her interesting, that would be fine too. Like for example, pirates of the caribean. All those females are all dressed to that distinct culture. (dont use pirates).

Yes there will be another challenge like this.
When though - im not sure.

---
Hopefully that cleared up your questions and concerns.
I tried giving multiple examples and explaining in different ways so that hopefully atleast 1 of those explanations or examples will make sense to you.
I thought this was more straight forward than last time. I guess i was wrong.

No.
That would be considered part of a background.
You are allowed clothing and accesories - things like a cane, or something they could hold in their hand. but since the rock is not an accesory, rather part of the land, it wouldnt be allowed.
With things like a mermaid though, say you want her tredding water - just have her hover in air tredding. Dont use water around her because that would be part of a background.
I just want the animated female nothing more, nothing less

here's a question: is animation a possibility when it comes to the image requirements for each round?
as of right now, no I do not see any animation. Every image will be static.

You had my hopes up for no animation  :'(

I think this round will be the end of me, I have no animation ability, and have been trying to animate all day, it's just not happening, I'll try and fit in time the next two weeks but I didn't know (well I guess I did know I just never tried it) decent animation took this long (all I've done is crappy 2-frame animation). I say goodluck to all, and may you have better animation skills than me.

Buloght, endure. If animation's not your forte, then don't go for anything really complicated. An idle animation can be an eye blink, if it comes down to that. Don't just not submit because of your animation problem. Work at it, you have the time. The contest may be a contest, but it's also a skillbuilder. Build your skill.

ya,
and as you saw last round.

Some of the entries werent even completed and still passed because it was still better than their opponents, or their opponents dropped out.

Its best to still have an entry even if you arnt that great at animation.
As helm said - make the animation simple then - if the character is still interesting, that subtle touch of movement may just be enough.
but please still try.

Im trying to add different elements to each round, so that, as helm mentioned you are able to build your skill.
Lots of people had problems with iso and still tried.

Man nothing is more time consuming than making a big animation.
But still I think this is more fun than this iso tileset.

Don't give up on yours buloght.
You're too much of an awesome artist to loose to someone as lowly as me :)
I'm just a ghost anyway, I have technically already been defeated.

Have fun everyone and don't you even think of submitting nothing this time D:

"Coming along" is such a strong phrase. I'd say "eventually going to start once the image and inspiration pack into my mind simultaneously". Out of the three rounds, this one is the first I've to procrastinate on starting.

Haha, yeah I've learned a lot about animation in this round so I am a winner if I lose or not  :P But I meant not simple as in simple look, I meant simple as in an extended blink level of animation  :-[

I AM expecting something amazing from you since you have some pretty amazing stuff in your pj gallery animated, and xion has some pretty amazing animation here, and since you are B.O.B-xion ... :)

[EDIT]: Sent. have mercy on me judges.

Have we stopped updating the banners? Round 2 ended a while ago.

Wether or not my entry gets finished is more or less governed by the workload I receive on Monday. Been put on two projects at once right now. I'd really hate disappointing everyone. Best of luck to the lot of you.

SolidIdea: That's what I did. I had some intricately detailed character in mind, but couldn't even bring myself to get past the lineart of a single frame of it, so I just changed ideas completely and it's going a lot smoother.

Entry is in.

I'm exhausted. Great challenge, but I'm just glad I got this out of the way for now. Thankfully I didn't have to work at home today or I would be left with a wip. Hope the rest of you made it. I'm expecting a good turnout here.

Whew. Just sent mine in.

I had much more planned for it, but I guess I didn't expect it to take so long to animate. I'm very happy with what I did though. I have some half-finished stuff too, so might actually continue on this one after the challenge is over.

As animating isn't my strong side I'll probably get beaten into a pulp now, lol.

Aw, B.O.B. what happened to you? You still have to post the unfinished work so I know what I would have been up against. You know you have to.

I dunno if I feel that I deserve to have gotten this far in the tournament since I haven't had any competition 2 out of 3 times. It's cool to be among the final four though :) And I am really looking forward to see what everyone did for this!

I think you do, love your stuff, even if you didn't have competition. You're really doing your best on your work (Especially impressive since you havent pixeled alot yet, like, what is it, 15 pixel arts, and already so good?), and I think you deserve the spot.

Oh, besides having been around forever, since three or four, or even all of the pixelation incarnations, with occasional pixel posts as well, general artistic skill translates to pixel art pretty well, and I think Mirre is a very talented artist if I may say so.

Re: Pixelator: Round 3 (rules)

Reply #71 on: March 16, 2007, 03:01:28 am
I'll be honest, I turned in mine a bit too late. I had chosen an idea too extensive to animate. If I were to have worked on it each and every day from the time round 3 would have began, then it would be about 95 percent done. Unfortunately, this was not the case. I stupidly misread the date as Wednesday, March 14, 12 midnight. Obviously that was my fault, and I deserve to counted out.
However, I didn't submit nothing. In fact, I still have my W.I.P., which I've already sent to Flaber to showcase in the "dunce" or "hall of shame" section of this tourney, to let others know that I indeed, did not skimp out on this competition. Although I only finished about 50% of the details, and slides, I still sent it in. It's not much(in fact, it's a pretty damn rough animation), but I'm still glad I tried. Gotta' finish the race, even if it is in dead last, ya know?...

So congrats to those who submitted entries, and to Mirre and Blick for moving on to the next round.

P.S. I'm sorry again, Mirre. I'll leave a sweet taste of revenge on my mind, till we meet again...

Yours has more character and more details, she does some fancy stuff while mine is just flapping around.

Really love your female, snake. Totally in love with the details on the face, and breasts. And also the flow of the clothing. Damn sweet. I also really like yours, buloght. Though I think you might have benefitted from making it larger with more room for details.

B.O.B.: lol, how can I not forgive you after reading the message in your animation? You have got to battle me some other time though. It would be awesome. I really like what you had done with your female so far though. I think you should finish it and upload on PJ.

buloght had the technicals better.

I disagree, start small I say, I don't have animation skill, and going bigger would have made it much harder and more static for me.

Haha, oh man, I think I got hypnotized by Snake's.
Great job, everyone.

And 9_6, I think the motion of the flag on the back of the scythe is wrong. While the scythe does move down in the animation, the lady would be moving up as her wings went down, so it would be straight then, and pretty much, it's the opposite of how it should realistically be.
Oh yes naked women are beautiful

Very close between buloght and 9_6, i too prefer 9-6's both the're both really good.

I agree.

Get your pop corn everybody! We got a slobber knocker on our hands!

Snake, you are a wonderful artist, if not one of the best, but I'll be rootin' for my boy, Bulought "The Bullet"...

Entertained, I shall be, hhmmm...

Yeah, B.O.M.B., you've got to finish that.

Snake's so looks like something from Twilight Princess.

TBH I liked 9_6's better too, no offense buloght, I thought yours is good as well though.

Wow great results everyone! I'm suprised how none of the designs look the same. They are all very creative and unique. My favorite has to be Buloght. Nice and simple, good animation and good sprite. It seems to have good character. I also really liked Snake's too. Once again, goodjob everyone.

Great entries , everyone.=)
I'm with judges on this one.
I'd say idle animation loop is the tough task, I think winners fully earn the right to get their butts kicked in the nex round.=)

Like the B.O.B's the most, lazy cow.=)

Coincidentally, Mirre, my first idea was a centaur. You certainly pulled it off better than I was going to.

It's really cool that Snake's is only 4 individual frames. It looks like more than that to me.

Guess Flaber didn't notice that I cut them up into two parts. Here's the whole set:

@solididea. Hahaha, that's pretty freaky. In a good way though. Nude doamhead slimepogo lady. That's some Interesting use of squares as well.

9_6's entry is very fluid, buloght's warewolf makes me think of a gritty version of Rampage. It's a pretty though tie, not sure which I would vote on. Someone had to come out on top in the end.

Both Mirre and Blick look good stationary, but I have to admit, I'm missing some action. But then, it is an idle pose and works for it's purpose. Wait... did Centaurus's have cat ears?

And B.O.B. You really need to finish that.

Didn't really intend for mine to be static. But I didn't manage to finish all of the planned animations. I'll do it when I have time, and then upload to the PJ gallery.

It's horse ears ;)

Great minds think alike?

Oh, and judges... where's the commentary? I was looking forward to that.
