Pixelator: FULL

on: January 18, 2007, 01:59:47 am
SIGNUP COMPLETE
CHALLENGE WILL START MONDAY

Hey everyone,

Im setting up a new challenge.

This challenge will consist of only 16 people.
After 16 people have signed up I will randomly divide everyone into pairs. These pairs however, (unlike the secret santa) will not be creating a gift for one another. Rather you are 'competing' in order to move onto the next round.
This challenge will be setup in a bracketed elimination format. Winner moves on, looser is eliminated.
With 16 people, this means there will be 4 rounds until a winner is announced.
winner                 _________|_________
round4         ____|____                 ____|____
round3     __|__       __|__         __|__       __|__
round2  _|_    _|_   _|_   _|_    _|_   _|_   _|_    _|_
round1  |    |  |    |  |   |  |    |  |    |  |   |  |    |  |    |

Each round will be 2weeks long. At the start of each challenge I will announce the topic and you will have to create an image that relates to the given topic. Once the image is completed, to submit it, PM me the link opposed to posting on the boards. A team of judges will look at each piece and determine a winner for each round. I will then show all the duels with the images and who won.

The judges for this are:
-flaber
-Indigo
-Helm
-Alexhansonwhite

The 'judges' will look at each image to see quality, technique, overall composition, colour choice, and originality. Therefore the more creative the idea you have, and the more time spent is a better chance of moving on.
If you do not submit an image within the 2week period, you will be disqualified and the opponent will automatically move on.

To join, in your post please say "IM JOINING"
I will take the first 16 people only.

If there is any questions, feel free to ask

EDIT: Due to high enthusiasm I will take 32 contestants now and up it to a 5th round.

Wait, didn't Sedge propose this idea at Pixeljoint? Anywho, I'm probably gonna regret this, buttttttt....."I'm N."
Seeing as how I haven't pixeled something original in a while, I'm predicting that I'll recieve a one punch TKO in the first round. Still, sounds like something I've been wanting to do for while..."The only death that will suffice to The B.O.B., is death on the battle field!!"

Questions:

1. When a pair wins, do they stay together, or are partners randomly assigned once more?

2. Once the final pair wins, do they each go against each other for the grand master challenge?

Simon Says is a game, in the form of a plastic thing with four buttons made by Ralph Baer, and a physical one where the participants have to do whatever the "Simon" says.

The only pairs there are, are the person you are 'dueling' against. Each duel is 1vs1. So you and your pair are going against each other. The winner moves on, the looser is done.
No teams on this one. Its all solo.

Indigo was making reference to an American TV show personality.
Its nothing too worry about.

Dangit. I assumed Indigo meant that Helm would be the one that made the theme for the duels, and the American Pix-idle (Idle means doing nothing, by the way. Idol is the right word) was just him blathering.

A few questions: Are there no theemes that we'll be making our pieces after? Just make whatever? Also, are there no guidelines as to what and how this is to be made?

I'm thinking of signing up. However, due to my new full-time job and lack of computer, it will be somewhat of a handicap. I suspect my new one will be arriving today. If so, I'm in.

And the answer to that question:

Each round will be 2weeks long. At the start of each challenge I will announce the topic and you will have to create an image that relates to the given topic. Once the image is completed, to submit it, PM me the link opposed to posting on the boards. A team of judges will look at each piece and determine a winner for each round. If you do not submit an image within the 2week period, you will be disqualified and the opponent will automatically move on.

So yeah. The duel, I believe, will consist of topics given to us, then we draw the pieces in association with that certain topic. In that case, I'm hopin' they don't choose anything to do with Iso, or rpg's, else I'm screwed....

What is "inanity?" Were you trying to say insanity, maybe? I'm sorry, I don't really know if that's a word or not.(I'm being serious)

Also, he was referring to Simon Cowell, 1 of the 3 judges on the show American IDOL, where amateurs compete to be Americas next top singer/star/whatever-I-don't-give-a-hoot-cuz-I-hate-that-damn-show...Any who, Simon is the mean judge, who always gives the harshest critique of the bunch. The crowd hates his guts, but obviously the show would be nothing without him...I still think the show sucks...make your own conclusions.

Whoops, I did use the wrong word.  I'll fix that.  Yes, it's "American Idol"

and Helm, It sounds like you're getting worked up over this.  Twas a simple joke thats all - one in which you butchered in every direction. :P  B.O.B described it just fine.  The reason I did not describe him here was simply because it's hard to get an accurate description of him without looking into it yourself.....that and because i was just lazy.

anyway, this is extremely off topic so I suggest we just leave it at this point.

1.   lacking sense, significance, or ideas; silly: inane questions.
2.   empty; void.
–noun
3.   something that is empty or void, esp. the void of infinite space.

Next time you are not sure if something is a word or not I suggest you use dictionary.com (Or maybe even an actual dictionary)

If I remember correctly, this is sort of a test run to see how this type of activity will turn out.  If all goes well with this one, much larger versions of this will be held.

Not to stray this off-topic (seems to be going pretty well as it is, I also propose a fifth round if we have enough people) but I hope not a lot of people think I do critique like this Simon character apparently does. I don't remember ever trying to discourage someone from making pixel art, and I always speak clearly about what I see. It's not that I get worked up over this, it's more that I am disappointed anyone would say I am discouraging or insulting in my critique. I try to help as much as I can and now I'm some sort of stereotypical 'harsh judge' personality? Unfair, I say! A joke, then? Why joke about this?

Oh well. I guess I'll take my frustrations out on the pixelator entries I have to judge on. YOU ALL FAIL IN ADVANCE. QUIT PIXEL ART AND GO BACK TO EMBROIDERY, JERKS.  :'(

I personally think Simon is the only good thing about American Idol. Otherwise the whole show is complete crap. ...such as just about pretty much every other reality TV show.

5th round would be great - theres enough people here up for it - plus plenty who havent seen this thread yet.

and tbh if someone is late or forgets their entry then their competitor will go through by default.

on the american idol topic - it was originally called Pop-Idol over here in the UK where it spawned.  Simon cowell is a judge  and he also appears on X factor.  he is hilarious and doesnt take shit.  Crushes lots of dreams - but its all a laugh for the viewers at home!

Harsh crits or not, Helm is the least of my worries. I'm still not sure who else is participating in the tourney, but I know who is. And the competition is starting to look fierce. Snake already has others quivering in thar' boots. I hope this tourney ends up well, so it could be repeated in the future. I've always wanted to do some type of pixel tourney, but I felt suggesting it would get turned down, due to people feeling it would hurt others feelings for losing, or whatever. Totally down with this though...
By the way, I wasn't trying to be offensive in any way with my previous comments. I initially looked up the word inanity at Wikipedia, and for some reason, it didn't recognize it. I apologize for not having a wider vocabulary, and I guess I should have looked harder. I hope everybody here can relax, and just have fun with this activity(if given the opportunity) and not turn it into some meaningless argument. Can't wait for this thingy-majigg to start! :)

I'll give this a go if there is a 5th round, but don't expect to do good here with all the great artists.

I'm JOINING

I won't have an internet connection from 1feb, but should be able to get on somewhere once or twice every two weeks to check here (though I'll probably fall in the first round). Personally I think helm's type crit posting is great, it is the quickest way to improve (apart from studying pixel art). I've learned everything that way, not that I know much, so much to learn.

Quote from: snake
A few questions: Are there no theemes that we'll be making our pieces after? Just make whatever? Also, are there no guidelines as to what and how this is to be made?

Right now there are no known themes. Once the challenge begins, and everyone has signed up and been assigned to a duel I will announce the first challenge. Each challenge will vary from technique to creativeness. Im leaving it fairly open to interpretation so that everyone doesnt recreate the same image, rather uses their creativity to think of a something different that relates to the theme.
But yes, there will be themes. Once each new round begins, the new theme will be released.

Quote from: ZoSo
just a question can you pixel anything and in any size you want? Doesnt matter, i still in just wondering
Each challenge will have different limitations / expectations. Some may be open to size variation, some may be restricted. Im not saying overly much about the challenges, as thats what I hope will add to this - no pre-planning. I will though, list what is expected and excluded for each challenge.

Quote from: Stwelin
here's a question: is animation a possibility when it comes to the image requirements for each round?
as of right now, no I do not see any animation. Every image will be static.

--
Hope that answers some questions.

Sorry for taking abit to respond. Seems quite abit has happened in this thread within the past day.

Im actually really surprised at how well this is seeming to turn out. As someone had mentioned earlier, I too was alittle worried that it wouldnt get much participation because of 'hurt feelings' and such.
So, because of the quick and large amount of enthusiasm this has recieved, I will up it to 5 rounds.

YES, THE TOURNY NOW HOSTS 32 PEOPLE --> 5 ROUNDS

I had initially only wanted it to be a small activity, because as Indigo mentioned, this was going to be the test run. I wanted to see what type of activities work and what dont. I also wanted to get a grasp of a good format and set of rules.
What I had hoped, was that if this small version is successful, then I would create a larger version.
Seems to be working out pretty good so far, and at this rate, I see myself setting up another one, if anyone here misses out.

Now, just waiting to fill those last few positions for round 5. I do not think I will include anymore after this, since this is my test run at the activity.
If those spots get quickly filled, Im hopeing to start the activity by about sunday/monday sometime.

If there are any more questions, feel free to ask.

Since we've moved from 16 to 32 I redid the graph:

Added the new icons and added my own. That's as far as I'll go in terms of a portrait. Put in the added names to the list. Tried to keep it random, but I ended up following the list in the end. Took a while to figure out how to make the dark backdrop less distracting from the main lines. Took even longer uploading a version Photobucket would accept. If there are any name errors just point them out and they'll be fixed by the next update.

Still haven't got my new comp. I'm still going to participate, just hope it gets here today as building it takes time.

So, planning on being pxtion's fozzybar Flaber? ( a reference to conceptart.org forums...)

well, I think from now we should plan out a containment method for when someone drops out. Conceptart.org has done many many contests like this and people AAALWAYS drop out, not to mention that is precisely what happened in the Secret Santa.......

Helm...hillarous to see u play a soft side XD. yeah Simon is kind of the first guy who reaaaaaaally critiqued the contestants...that's why he can be associated to you, "a simon" sort of equals the quintesential reality show hard C&C-er, Simon himself is quite the asshat but the "simons" of other shows have been more fair and respectful to the contestants...so being "a simon" is ok...while Simon" isnt :p

Wow, this competition is looking fierce. I better start warming up. Here's my portrait for the graph/contest line up:

Heh, just for practice, I put in a win and lose portrait, just in case. I'm hoping the lose portrait won't be used for both artistic and competitive reasons....

By the way, Scotteh, I think Flaber already mentioned a couple times in this thread that we have to pixel a topic, or subject that is given to us. Some may be restricted, others may not. No animations will probably be allowed, I'm guessing(at least for now...).I think a new topic is given for each round, considering the fact that you win, of course. Good luck to err' body!

Those who are late in submitting their entry, or those who do not submit an entry at all will be automatically disqualified. There is no waiting, no extensions, no symapthy. If the entry is not in within the time period, you are automatically disqualified and the other person wins.

Is 2 week time periods too long, or is that ok? Should I change it to 1week rounds?

Quote from: Conceit
So, planning on being pxtion's fozzybar Flaber? ( a reference to conceptart.org forums...)
Yes, that is where I got the idea from. I saw it had quite abit of participation and hype, so i figured Id try and adapt a version for pixelation. there hasnt really been anything like this, as far as I can remember, thats why I figured Id give it a trial run to see how it would go.

Quote from: Conceit

Just so everyone knows, each entry will not recieve their own personal crits. What the judges will do once everything is submitted will go through each image, and look at the different aspects I mentioned earlier to 'mark' it out of 10. Then the 4 scores from the judges will be averaged, and whichever turns out to be highest for the duel will move on. Since this is more or less a fun competition, I will only announce winner and looser, to avoid the potential of hurt feelings or embarresment (incase someone may not do overly well).

--
Thanks snake for the graph.
I was planning on creating one of my own, but seeing as how you have already created one, and its been accepted by everyone else, then if you dont mind me using it, that would be great. I might make a few changes here and there. Thanks though, thats looking great.
Dont necessarily worry about the order you have it in. I still have to randomize the first duels, so I can put it in proper order.

only 4 spots remain.

I'm up against snake in the first round? :wah:

see:

Dont necessarily worry about the order you have it in. I still have to randomize the first duels, so I can put it in proper order.

a good flash-person could really make something special out of this.

I'm pretty flash handy. been a few months since i did anything big with actionscript, but it's easy to pick up. just brainstorm some ideas for what the flash should be themed as. (for example, KOS was like a fighting arcade game console?)

There we go.
All the spots are filled now.

Now I just have to randomize the order for the first duels, and then its all done.
The challenge has already been determined and will be posted tomorrow.

I will try to post each challenge on my Sunday night (GMT-7). That should mean that it is Monday sometime for some of you.

Im looking forward to seeing how this turns out, and the entries that are submitted.

Let's do double elimination!

Snake, draw up a loser's bracket.

as i said, this whole set is my trial version. to see what works and what doesnt.
i dont want to take on too much just yet, when its still in the midst of being worked out for the first time.
that could be something though we can look into later.
right now, there will be just the 5 rounds.

seeing as how this bracketed chart is working out nicely and alot of people have made their own battle icons, Ill leave it as it is. If you do not have a battle icon, I will just use the first 1 or 2 letters of your name for your icon, unless you send me something to replace it.

Yeah well, if there were a loser's bracket, it could run concurrent to the regular bracket. Same theme or whatever, same deadline, but compeeting amongst the losers. Also allows a comeback if two good artists go at it first or second round. Winner of the loser's bracket has to beat winner of regular bracket twice. Winner of regular bracket only needs one win. That's usually the way we run things at fighting game tournaments in Dallas, and it's generally regarded as the fairest way to do things. But yeah, twas just a suggestion.

Oh and, make it one week per round. Need a little pressure to keep things interesting/moving along.

Actually, I'd keep my vote for 2 weeks. I think we could keep alot of disqualifications out that way, and have people come up with higher grades of artistic pieces.

In a similar thing I participated in some time ago you had one week to finish your piece and send it to the organizer, and he made a thread for every pair with a poll for everyone to vote, which was open for one week. I think this week was really important to rest your mind a little, and to get a clear head again. And I guess in our case here the judges won't mind some time to write their commentary as well.

Anyway, one thing that's definitely missing in the chart is the third place (though I suppose we will have some sort of an extra podium image for the winners). Usually the two who drop out in the semi-final fight for third place during the final round. In this thing I took part in they even gave the finalists an extra week, so the third rank battle did not coincide with the final round.

Great to see people taking the time to do their portraits. Getting a nice collection here. Again, there was bound to be some misspellings on the names, so just change them yourself when you update.

Touché Féron, touché.

Is

Hah! Pkmays, the misunderstood. I think the people with the lower case I's wanted it to be intentional, to go along with their name. I don't consider it a problem. But hey, I'm not the mod, or captain of this tourney/activity, so it might be changed.
Also, I coulda' sworn that today(Sunday, 01/21/07) we would get the first look at who's against who? I know it's a possible Monday thing, too, I just wanted some verification if possible....cooommmee ooonnnn, I'm anxioussss.....

This suddenly got a hell of a lot more nerve wracking as soon as I sent mine in. :'(

Should I have made a background despite the probability that it would ruin my pretty AA?
Should I have scooched the monster 2 pixels to the right so it isn't pressed up against the wall?
Should I have left so much whitespace?

Goddamncrapwhore.

Good luck everyone, I love you all, now I'm gonna die because of my regret for sending my entry in so early.
