SMF: A New Software

on: July 18, 2005, 02:49:49 am
So this is a SMF forum. This is the avenue we've chosen to go down for the future of Pixelation. Comments, good and bad, are welcome. We'll definitely make efforts to customize and refine the template for Pixelation, but there might be things we haven't considered that you think are sucking the quality out of the forum experience, so please do not hesitate to share your opinions!

Spiffy, I like it. I hope you guys keep the grey BG for the official board. I like it much better for displaying art.

Oh yeah, small question. Will we have to re-register and lose our posts when the official PA.O's board goes up?

That's a good question. The answer is, yes, we decided to use a more neutral background for posts on the next Pixelation scheme. The color scheme will still have "Pixelation Blue" in it, and similar shades, but we'll be expanding the scheme to be easier on the eyes.

Looks okay to me, except what's with the weird "Pixelopolis" text up in the corner? It's all choppy and weird. I'm also not diggin' the white background behind the grey.

But other than that, it seems good.

Are you inviting us to comment on this forum? I must say it's...well, pretty good for a temp forum, though I miss the old Pixelation bloo. ;D

Zoom Function: Noted.

StairwaytoEvan: This is just a temporary forum. Please try to tolerate it's imperfections.

Godslayer: I'm inviting everyone to comment on the features of this forum software model, not necessarily this specific forum. We'll be testing things out here, and the good elements would be applied to Pixelation.

One thing that annoyed me a bit is that when you post a reply to a topic (and I assume when you post a new topic as well, although I haven't tried this), you're put back into the main thread list in stead of to your new post.  I guess this makes sense since you've already replied and there's nothing else to do with the thread except leaving it, but I still like being able to verify that I didn't make any mistakes in my post, that others didn't post in the meantime (if I'm replying to something), etc. All other forums I've seen put you at your new post, so I guess it's a matter of what I'm used to as well. In any case, is it possible to change this ?

Aside from the zoom function, I don't have any big qualms. One thing bugged me a bit though. I spent three minutes looking for the memberlist. :P

Have any of you tried using one of the zooming extensions for firefox? I was testing it out in my thread, and I noticed that the post boxes in this forum system won't expand past the length of the screen. Maybe you guys will like it, but I kinda don't like it all that much as it limits the maximum amount of the picture you can look at and makes you have to use a scrollbar connected to a post to view the rest of the picture. It's not that big of a deal and would probably be easy to get used to, but I like how the phpbb system would expand the borders of the current post to meet the requirements of the picture(s) within it.

A few crits on the forum...

A "quick reply" at the bottom of a thread would be nice.  I think it's just a nice courtesy to have the checkbox for the "hide email" thing checked by default when you register -- I almost forgot to check that which nearly exposed my super-secret identity. The last crit is just to ditch some of the boxes floating at the top (user info, news box, key stats)... either move them to the bottom or bail on them entirely -- personal preference of course, but I think it's nice to have a clear nav at the top for morons like me that get lost while browsing.

Other than that this looks great. I'm sure the new pixelation will be great.

Im not fond of how it quotes people. Maby its just my comp, but in the 'welcome' thread, theres a few people who quoted and its so damn small, I really have to concentrate to read it.
Thats about all there is for me to say... except for maby colour scheme but thats nothing to fret over.

All I have to say is I wish like all other forums when you clicked profile you went right to editing your profile not to this huge menu that took me 15 mins to figure out...  "I just wanted to change my avy!" says the boy as he’s taken away in an ambulance, "SO MANY MENUES!!  The menus!"
"It will be ok just calm down" said the EMT, "Someone get this boy some morphine I'm not going to lose him!! I have a perfect record and he’s not going to ruin it!

If it took you 15 minutes to figure out the profile menu, you better either put your glasses on or stop buying crystal meth from the junk dealer down the lane.

When your internet is as slow as mine, and you go on when everyones on, it makes it even slower.  Yet, when you don't remember which tab allowed you to edit avys it could take a while.  IE: 5-7 mins of loading per page.

IE sucks the big piece of moon-rock.

Get a better browser, like firefox.

BrotherInWar: Get a better internet. Like Cable, or DSL at least. :)

trick: You can change that option in your profile to set you back to the topic instead of the main forum. It's under Look and Layout Preferences.

As for the Zoom function, Firefox's Zoom function acts a little funky on the board. I believe that the forum is creating iframes for every post with a size based on the amount of data (I haven't checked, so... it's only theoretical, heh). Which is fine, but upon increasing that data by, say, zooming in on an image 400%, it creates scrollbars, and that is a little annoying. I'm not sure exactly what you guys can do about that other than taking out the iframes. But perhaps when the Zoom function is built in, it will be able to get around that problem. :)
Hey, #pixelation is still around on irc.sorcery.net. So point your favorite IRC client that way and hang a while.

What?! More neutral background?? Noo! Darnit... now I have to change that nice habit I had about instantly changing the white to Pixelation-blue in a pic as soon as I got to the coloring stage... I still do it, even if Pixelation's still not around. I just think it's much easier to appreciate all shades and colors against a relatively dark background.

[edit] Hold on.. hoold on.. this HAS to be a modern enough forum thingy that it supports user-selectable themes.. if not, it sucks. If it does, then there's our solution! One new theme with new, more "neutral" colors and one old-school theme for people like me. [/edit]
