The Official Pirate Challenge

on: September 18, 2005, 04:24:40 pm
Pirate Challenge Main Post

Firstly, to clear any "timeline" things up, the event "starts" on monday, and goes either until all participants have turned in their pieces, or it officially becomes dead and nobody cares any longer.. With that all cleared up:

This is the main post for the Official Pirate Challenge. Please limit your postings in this thread to WIP works, Final works and critiques. If you think having a WIP only thread and a Finals only thread would be better suited to prevent spammage and to make things easier to go through, please send me a forum message and if I get enough considerations this will become the finals thread and I will create a WIP thread. People who are not involved in the challenge can post here but ONLY if it is critique of a piece, and only if the critique is given some thought. When the challenge is oficially closed, everyone is free to post their comments on the pieces.

The actual challenge doesn't begin until the 19th, but I thought i'd get things going a day early, to give people some time to get familliar with their partner, look up some references etc.. I'm going to try and lock the thread until tomorrow, or late tonight, and when it is unlocked, feel free to post away. Other than that, I think we have a great turn out for this event, 15 total teams comprised of 2 people each. If anyone is interested in joining, go ahead and say so in the sign-up thread. Other than that, have a great time, and I look forward to seeing some great stuff from you guys. Without further ado, the list!!

Group [ 01 ] BrotherInWar -- Negative Gravity
Group [ 02 ] Godslayer -- Helm
Group [ 03 ] Dogmeat -- Peppermint Pig
Group [ 04 ] Flaber -- Needs a partner
Group [ 05 ] G Dragon -- Pawige
Group [ 06 ] pHASE1 -- Sawtooth
Group [ 07 ] Xion Night -- istvan
Group [ 08 ] Darien -- ehwhy
Group [ 09 ] Lief -- sedgemonkey
Group [ 10 ] Monsoon2D -- Zolthorg
Group [ 11 ] Indigo -- jeiki
Group [ 12 ] Zach -- Pegucha
Group [ 13 ] Niss -- Kclic
Group [ 14 ] Kryon -- Akira
Group [ 15 ] pixelblink -- Pixel32
Group [ 15 ] DrDerekDoctors -- Neoriceisgood

And of course, heres the outline again:

1.0 - Description
1.1 - Date: STARTS Sept 19th – 9/19/05
1.2 - Time: As long as needed
1.3 - Size Restrictions: 180x145 : Template Provided to you ( right click, save-as to download )
1.4 - Color Restrictions: 18 or 32
1.5 - Style Restrictions
1.6 - Props
1.7 - Background
1.8 - Partners

1.0   – Description
This is the official Pixelopolis Pirate Challenge. The challenge will test users strengths in line-art, coloring, shading and scene creation. It will also force users to interact together to possibly create new friendships, or strengthen old ones.

1.1   – Date
We’ve chosen to start the event on September 19th because it is annual pirate day.

1.2   – Time
The Event should hopefully run as long as needed for everyone to complete their work on their partner.

1.3   – Size Requirements
I’ve created a template which is 180x145, it has a border around it and a space at the bottom that MUST be used to come up with a creative name for your “pirate friend” and also so that you may place your signature if you’d like. The border color can be changed, but keep it dark in nature.

1.4   – Color Constraints
18 Colors no transparency if you are doing just a pirate, 32 colors if you want to fill the entire area, this is for your scene only, the template with bottom area has a 8 color restriction, and it would be preferred for you to use colors from your image in these areas to try and learn to conserve colors. You must use at least 6 colors in your picture.

1.5   – Style Restrictions
Once you have a partner, you must try and get to know them, feel for their style, look up some of their artwork, talk to them, see what they like, etc.. When creating your pirate you want to incorporate your partners traits into the picture. For example, Dogmeat is fond of dogs, so maybe your pirate for him would look like a dog! Other then that, use your imagination.

1.6   – Props
Your pirate has to have at least 1 prop, and an optional animal. Props consist of peg legs, eye patches, hook hands, scimitars, etc.. Animals would be like parrots, dogs, etc..

1.7   – Background
Background can be whatever you want, but you have to keep it in the theme of pirates and what not. Ships, beaches, digging up treasure, etc..

1.8 - Partners
Partners will be partnered together at random and a list will be compiled of all the people and their partners before the actual event starts.

The other rules are as follows:

HAVE FUN!!!!

You're definitely one sexy bitch lief. Another revision.  Grrrr.  Don't you hate when you get halfway into a piece and you realize you screwed up a bunch of stuff?  Oh well.

Wait. As partners are we meant to be colloborating on one single work, or dedicating our pirate to eachother? Or does it matter which way we interpret it? Sorry if it was obvious, I just got a little confused.

You are using the template to make a likeness of your partner as a pirate using the style guidelines and whatnot, he or she will do the same for you. So you are each working on an individual piece.

I'm sorry if there was any confusion about exactly what you are supposed to do. I've gotten a request to have some part of this challenge be a collaboration, as much as that is a good idea, I believe it is already too late to change the current challenge as it is. Though, if this turns out to be a big success, maybe we can do something in honor of halloween, but make it a collab instead of "pixel your partner as a ghost" or something. I have some interesting ideas already stewing in my head on this.

I don't mind if you guys are showing off your pieces to eachother, sending them back and forth and what not, talking about them, thats actually the whole point of the challenge, to get a sensation of your partner by using your verbal skills and artistic talents to create a minds eye vision of them. I think that is a big part of the challenge, trying to capture the "essense" of your partner, damn me for choosing pep! He's got such a stylistic art approach, and he's such a character, but that's part of the challenge for me, along with trying to work on my anatomy skills, shading, coloring, etc..

OKAY. Here's what I've got so far:

17 colours, some of which directly taken from Xion Night's works.

The pirate is based on a number of Xion Night's larger characters as far as pose and shading details go. I also tried to make it slightly dark and twisted.

The 'conversation' bubble will be an animated treasure map, which will see the character run and hop his way to the treasure chest (x marks the spot!) at the lower left hand corner, impersonating XN's current avatar. Trying to incorporate as much of XN's style as possible, but staying original at the same time.

Not too sure about the background yet. It's really simple so far as not to distract, but I think I'll need to do something with it before I can animate the map.

Finished!

15 colors, I believe.

Also, I assembled an animated gif showing my progress, as well as testing other color schemes midway through the work. The last frames in the animation are nitpicks and color tuning.

On with a pirate joke!
So a pirate goes into a bar with a steering wheel in his pants.
The bartender says, "You know you have a steering wheel in your pants?"
The pirate replies, "Yaaarr, 'tis drivin' me nuts!"

I'm going to attempt a fully animated piece, so mine will take a while, especially since I haven't done animation work in a long time. Right now I'm working on a sort of 'splash screen' of when Pirate Zolthorg initiates his "super". (Very Capcom-esque.)

- EDIT -

No longer a splash screen, but an introduction. And instead of a fighter, I think I'll stick with a really nice platformer. Hoorah!

Progress (As of 9/29/05)

I still have a very simple sketch 3 colors to show outer lines and small inner details.

Its a scuba diving pirate because Neg likes to swim.  He has a eye patch on his goggles. (how ghetto is he!) His hook is a tad small yet I've already fixed that on my comp version. I need to fix his rump and his far arm, it is oddly shaped....

Pigggggggy:  That is a beauty piece... a great composition and wonderful work on the textures.  I actually like your more saturated version in the animation the best.

istvan:  Another kickass character design. If you are planning on going full out with animation a simple arm wave animation pointing to various spots on the map might give it some extra zing.

Monsoon2D:  That's a gigantor hairdo!  The work around the glasses and neck are just perfect.

Zach:  Great start... the micro man makes a nice sidekick.

Godslayer:  Your pixel work looks good, but you might be running into the same issue as me where we need to spend more time on composition before going full steam ahead with pixelling.  I'm pretty sure I'm gonna start over on mine.  :-\

Sedge: Huge improvement! It's nice to see you tightening up your pixels, but the sketchy look is still quite effective especially in the clouds.
And thanks for the suggestion. I intend to have my pirate's good eye wobble around as the mini version of himself makes his way to the treasure.

Here's my updatee:

I still need to finish the shading on the jungle and sand, and I haven't begun to comtemplate the difficulties in animating this guy!

VERY cool Xion Night! But I agree, it doesnt seem to neccessarily relate to my work in many ways, other than stylistically speaking. I think youve reflected my style sufficiantly, especially in the use of dithering other shading techniques such as a series of vertical lines. I wrote a post at PJ regarding my lineart a while back http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=440&PN=1 Might be helpful. My only suggestion would be to include references to specific works- but I'm not sure how easy that would be!

I don't see why you can't post it here, its coming along great!

pixelblink: Really bizarre face -- wish I could see the source picture. That page you link to doesn't load for me.

Xion Night: Going for the "peg arm" thing eh?  Overlapping the pirate in the foreground with the dude in the bg might help the piece a bit.

Dogmeat: Be careful... his right arm looks dangerously close to a shlong.  :o

Could have used more work Dogmeat. There's spots around the edges where AA is needed, the eyepatch is pitch black when it could maybe use some lighting.. the color and source of the light feels off, and there's vertical breaking effect shading on the nose. The eye that is exposed looks less refined and you need some AA on the eyepatch thread. The blue in the background is too dark to be meaningful. The candycane is sharp and fakey looking, like it's a glowy reflective metal sort of thing. The blue drool should probably be black or much less saturant to match the lighting in that area. The general composition of  the work is good. I like how the hillside rolls up. The moon is neat, but seems too cartoon like in style compared to the head. Palm trees don't look quite right... could use more leaves.

Might be alot of critique, but I think that this could have been better.

BTW, I did a ZX Spectrum version of the Dogmeat piece!

Wow, I love the soft palette Pegucha.

The sedgemonkey is also spot on Lief!

I've done a little more work. Started the animation process. Not sure how to get that zippy 'movement line' effect that Xion Night employs, but its a start! I also fiddled with the colours significantly.

the zippy stuff, is motion blur frames, when he stretches the animation out, makes it looks like he's zipping around and schtuff!

iST:  That animation will look great if you can get the blur effect. It'd be pretty sweet if you animated the pirates mouth moving up and down too  :P

could fix the purple though i think, make it a little stronger if your into that kinda thing
Yea I figured the saturated orange I had was beating up other colors and making stuff look uneven so i took it out

Here's an update getting into the aa. I'm pretty shaky with heavy aa. So I'm not sure if my technique in some areas is as good as it could be

1bit action:

rats are leaving the boat - cat too.

and here is the progress so far:

Arrgh is it really THAT neon? (I really start to hate LCD's ...)

some thoughts: I tried to keep this connected to his avatar which has only a few colors (3 if I remember correct) and a kinda flat look. That flatness is a result of the low contrast which I obviously didn't used in my pic. But I hope it still has a "flat" look. Anyway the pose of the pirate comes close to the pose of the guy in the avatar AND there's a cat in it (he likes cats). Dunno if I will do another one with more colors... let's see. Oh and I do not consider this one finetuned and all so please c+c appreciated!

iST: The speech bubble is absolutely gorgeous - lovin the idea!
sedge: HUGE improvement
pep: That's wonderful but I like the higher contrast version much better
monsoon: I can't wait to see this becoming real. The face looks ace but I like your simple bg most so far...

Well, I was unhappy with what I had before, so I scrapped it in favor of a more cartoony style:

Is this in more of your style, iST?

BTW, yeah, for the blur, I just stretch the guy out to make it look like he's goin' really fast. That is one of my most prided works, and one of a very few animations. Do it justice. ;)

:D Yes. This is BIW, believe it or not. I'm having trouble with texturing and just general texturing. And I have already run out of colors.  ::) Any help appreciated.

VERY cool Xion! I can certainly see some of my specific works in there, and the style is almost beyond me! BE-UTE-I-FUL. Your method of selective outlining is also quite intriguing- but good luck! I'm liking the red nose so far and nice dither work.

Sawtoorh: Oh man, I so totally forgot this... well I did a quick sketch now so you can see that I'm on it! :) I will clean up the sketch tomorrow.. now it's quite late so I must go to sleep. He will have an eyepatch and sawteeth so I think it qualifies, right? ;) still gotta pay attention to your style so I can mimic it.. that was the plan here, no? ??? ;D But nice piece from you, I do have few things to crit if I may, but will do that later.. must...sleep...now... :)

Go ahead and crit what you can, man, the chance for improvement is always appreciated.  I tried to draw the character from the picture that you took your avatar from.  I wasn't entirely sure what your style was, I haven't seen a lot of art from you.

the wip is looking mighty fierce.  AAR!

pixel32, that's looking really good. I think your colors are great. Yes, make it a metallic fish, since it would be scaly and reflective anyways. :)
