Chimeras

on: November 07, 2006, 05:32:22 pm
Hey people,

Today you have been given the power of a god.

Your objective is to come up with a new animal, a hybrid as a result of breeding any existing species that "normally" wouldn't do so ( I'm no one to tell people what to do with their free time).
You are to come up with crazy animals like the "Butterflant", or simply venture into the world of monstrosity, and explore the bizarre results of mixing your best friend with a cow.

- You are free to mix any amount of animals for your creature. You are also free to mix existing humans (provide references if you can) with animals, but have in mind we already have more than enough furries (antropomorphic drawings) on the net, so try to come up with something more bizarre and impacting.
- Try to stay away from the cliché pegasus, or mermaids, and the like.
- Bonus points if we can recognize the "parents" of your creature straight away.

The rules for this activity are:
-16 is the max. color amount you can use, so plan your palette wisely.
-Animation is optional, though you will be given extra love if you do!

So go on and start pushing those pixels!

Yeh, the point of a challenge IS to make something new, not go, "Lol, here is something I made 2 years ago :3"

There are no ugly colours, only ugly combinations of colours.

Great entries!

Well, mine was supposed to be a mix of a bear and a turtle, but somehow feathers came into the mix as well and it looks like none of those animals.

So basically we are making our own joke animal, kinda like the platypus.  I think I'm going to try a flying turtle squirrel, or some other similar mix.

Great things people, some really top stuff is coming up in these challenges recently.

mrmean, there seems to be a clash of styles in your piece, the shell being shaded in one way and the other areas in another. I quite like the way you've done the moose's head and the limbs, so i think following that up on the shell would look better.

No one else try doing a GECKARD, i've got that one coming.  ^-^

I think I might do a cleaner, different version that has more obvious influences. Its a fun activity.

(Figure A.)The Beepo, native to northern Brazil.

That was great fun, I'll probably do another.
Err.. Once I fix a few minor problems I didn't notice till now.

The hipposquirracoon (I think) is very good, but the line between the tail and the rump kinda shatters, and it doesn't look very good.

its a nautapillar, (nautalis/ cayipillar) im not sure if its valid cuz a natualis isnt teclinally an animal, i used only 9 colours, and could use some help making it look rounder (dithering didnt help that much)

And shepherds we shall be, for Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand that our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth unto Thee, and teeming with souls shall it ever be, In Nomine Patris, Et Filii, Et Spiritus Sancti.

Girantis
Giraffe, Angler fish and Mantis.

Study records from the International Biology Institute:

After introducing the Girantis to the African plains, it has in a short few years become a common sight on the savannah. Its lifecycle is relatively long given its size and has adapted to its environment surprisingly well. The Girantis feeds primarily on insects and uses its long tongue, rather than its claws to grasp its prey. It possesses bacteria capable of producing bio-luminescence. Mostly active at night, this is used to its advantage to attract the insects. The claws and light patterns are put into use when fighting for territory against another male. Each male tries to make its claws seem larger than its opponent and their light glands flicker to seem threatening. As opposed to its frontal legs and claws, its four hind legs are composed of only two joints. Some sources say this may be an indication that they were evolved at a later state, or that the frontal legs once worked as claws. Even more surprisingly, in contrast to it's biological makeup; recent studies have shown it to have a genetic makeup closely resembling that of a chameleon. The institute has yet to come up with a feasible conclusion to this. More research is required.

I love how you've made it look like something more than animals simply stitched together, Snake. It actually looks like a new creature on its own, it looks solid, how everything fuses together so convincingly.

I have been wanting to get better at drawing short haired muscular dogs like rottweilers and doberman pinschers lately so maybe I'll try making something incorporating one of them later on.

Dr. Derek Doctors, nice bullshit although I thought the bulldog half was a daschund at first.

Anyone that has replied without an entry, shame on you  >:(

Ryumaru: Nice combination, but if you find it too hard, I guess you could try smaller or something else. But don't give up, heh.

Godslayer: I really dig the colors in the beak. Some of the AA against the fur doesnt really work though. But of course you get extra points for picking a panda.

Helm: Really neat. I dont really have crits except a tiny nitpick. At the end of the tail, the sudden change from dark to light clashes a bit, but it could be easily fixed adding a few pixels of the second lightest purple. Also the Mantarilla's left front paw doesn't read straight away as the shape could be represented in more than one way. But  :y: overall, so cool.

Joseph: Ladybug (?) + Ostrich + Human? The neck has some AA that doesn't work, you could just erase a few of the darkest shade of brown to fix it though.

Lackey: Nice entries, though on the ratwolf, the eye looks weirdly positioned. But nice palette.

Faceless: Finish yours, you lazy bum :P

ejay: Nice entry. The leg looks awkwardly geometrical, but other than that  :y:

robotriot: Great idea, though the body doesn't read straight away. I must say I can't see those feather's you mentioned (or is that brown fur supposed to be them?)

Souly: As crab2selout.png mentioned, funny how it ended up with less legs than the parents. Somehow it looks pokemon-ish, but neat combo.

mrmean:  I must say that the mix is nice (the execution so far is cool),. But looks rather unfinished, and some style clash is going on with the body and the shell.

SolidIdea: Neat, hehe.

istvan: Another great entry heh. While some parts arent clear straight away, it has a nice character to it. Might be interesting trying to animate it.

Brian the Great: Manatee + Penguin? Hehe indeed a wild night I guess. The eye goes unnoticed at 1x so maybe you could use the darkest shade of gray you have for it.

Sherman Gill: Heh Beepo sounds cute. The lines look a bit messy and the snout looks like some other animal's though.

The B.O.B.: Jellyfish + Squid + Shark? Neat monster, though the mix is a bit unclear and loads of stuff is going on at once (and hence the focus of the picture is everywhere)

Schu: Lovely entry. I could perfectly see it in a game heh.

Peppermint Pig: While I'm not that much of a fan of the Korean pixelling style, the entry is pretty nice and well executed. The darkest purple/fuchsia stands out too much on some joints though.

Filax_666: Neat panda-turtle heh, looks really cute. And yeah I think you pretty much nailed it on the edit. Though the shell would benefit if it had a more turtle-shell texture.

st3ady: Heh, hare turtle, the irony. The dithering is awkward, esp. on the leg. Maybe try to use dithering for shaping and not just color blending. Also you could try experimenting with different dithering patterns. (While at times the 50% dithering works, you might end up with better results by using other ones.) The shell looks pillowshaded. (the green being lighter in the middle and growing darker towards the outlines) I guess it could be avoided picking a proper and consistant light source. So yeah, next time you could try putting attention on those points. But nice mix heh.

Draco9898: Hehe nice how you even put some description and made a font for it. As for the creature itself,  since it is not finished I can criticise deeply, but maybe you might want to start experimenting with less muddy colors and more with saturated.(Most of  the palette consists of colors with hues towards gray) But I guess that is more of a personal preference. I would like to see how this one ends up like.

Zach: Coming nice, looking forwards to more updates.

sk8m8trix: Uhm I think yours resembles more a narwhal caterpillar than a nautilus caterpillar (Isn't the nautilus that creature with some snail-ish shell and tentacles?). As for the picture, I guess it would benefit if you had in mind the body structure of it (and give volume acordingly) and texture. You should also plan your palettes more wisely. The colors you picked are too close to each other, and thus not doing their job properly. Maybe take a look at the other entries on this activity and try to "absorb" how they did it etc.
Good luck with further pixelling.

Gnarf: It's coming nice and it has potential, so finish it >:0

Huge: Even on the update, your "Cobuin" looks a tad off balance. Try to pull the neck to the right (our right) a pixel or two. While it's not that noticeable, I kinda like how you gave the penguin part a bit of the cobra's texture.

Skull: Nice so far.

DrDerekDoctors: Haha Bullshih-tzu. Nice entries. And yeah fix those AA-stray light gray pixels or add a background.

Morph: Is it a rhino + human + wheels :o?  I think you are improving at color selection. Please next time dont save as .jpg as it blurs the picture and adds extra noise.

difrnt: Looks cute, and yeah finish it, or else >:0

Rerg1: Uh, it's not like theres legal or illegal stuff for the activity, but I guess you can post it here aswell.

snake: Great entry  :y: Though I'm not really a fan of the wings, it looks cool. I would have used some extra colors to AA and all, but I guess that is again another personal preference. Extra points for that description heh.

Flaber: Nice, though the camel part looks a bit pillowshaded. (but I guess you were trying to shade like on that selfportrait you did) Also, there is this stray pink pixel on the right leg that kinda stands out.
But nice job, looks like it could exist in real life heh.

I hope that was everyone :0

Here's my chimera, a hamkey! They're the result of nuclear testing in the french pacific. Despite their awful smell the local population of Waki-Waki have taken these creatures to heart, and uses them regulary as scouts during low water spear fishing.

Thanks for the response guys. Much appreciated. Just noticed that the transparency got messed up in explorer (shouldn't be surprised really.) I'll have to look into it.

@ Sohashu: I just finished one. Not something for the public yet though.

@ TakaM: I've heard that a couple of times already. Lovely entry by the way. I do get the impression that it's made of rock, though in my eyes it just makes it more interesting  :y:

@ Junkboy: Loving the palette and light use. I'm a bit concerned about his groin though. His closest leg (to us) is hanging pretty far down thus giving little room for the other leg to reach around the other side. He could have just been tilting towards us, but then I noticed his other leg visible at the same height on the other side. Either he's got his groin pretty high up, or the Hamkey is very thin. Just a nitpick though.

I'm a bit concerned about his groin though.

Your concern for his groin is well-founded.
No, but seriously, good point. The hamkey is supposed to be kinda small (hence feet almost dragging in the water), so I enlongated his upper-body a bit in the edit, to illustrate that better. It's not perfect but it'll have to do.

Great entries everyone, the warning must of sparked off such a great response. Im still gonna do one, just a bit caught up in something atm.  :-[ won't be as great as some so don't get your hopes up, I was thinkin of doin mine in mockup form and interpreting it into one of my half completed level designs.. I've needed a character idea so hopefully what im thinkin of will fit well.
I've not got anything interesting to type here..

I don't wanna get banned so.....

The magnificant Scobullsharke.
It's mostly encountered in swampy places, were it lays it's head in the water, and it's body on the solid ground. Sadly, it has gills on it's face, and therefore must stay underwater to breath. But because it's body is warmblooded, it must stay above water to not get undercooled. It eats small creatures like rats and mouses, it also eats fish picked up with it's head. They are very aggresive, and will ram anything red with their horns. Because it seems to have both shark, and bull aspects, it's extremely aggresive when there is blood nearby. It's not recommended to come anywhere near these violent beasts.

Half tiger.
All beast.

I wasn't planning on participating, but I happened to be searching google images for "man tiger" and I came across  http://incolor.inetnebr.com/stuart/tiger7/title.jpg, and so I had to do it.

(btw: anybody who could help me out what this guy's from would be awesome)
