Commercial Critique Challenge - New Beast on the Block!

on: November 04, 2006, 07:32:04 pm
You know you can do better than one guy back in 1989 that designed all the art in Shadow of the Beast, right? Now, after decades of pixel art technique refinement and codification of methodology, you have your chance to show us how Beast would look in the modern day indie scene! Graham Lackey has studiously ripped us these pieces from the plains level of Shadow of the Beast - Genesis version:

for your perusal. Feel free to rip any other beastie from the game yourself, or from the other screenshots in the main thread. Remember: You may deviate from the design of the original beastie as much as you want, and the point is to add as many colors (though 16 max for a single enemy is a good idea I think) as you want, but it must still say 'Shadow of the Beast' and a seasoned veteran - like me :P - should be able to still tell from which enemy you started as a base. Keep the same sizes more or less! Otherwise, go nuts! Show us all how we've grown from 1989 to 2006!

If you're feeling really strong, you may attempt the Beast himself!!

Ah, I have the honour of making the first submission.

I always liked this little guy, hiding up in the tree.

(4,4,4 unstretched bit depth, amiga-proper)

No major redesign, as this was SHIT HOT to begin with. Just more colors and shinyage latter-day amiga effect. Pretty happy.

Lackey: that's wonderful!

Also, this is old, and photoshop, but it's a beast rendition too. First one to grab a screenshot from the game from where it is at gets extra helm points.

Here's my try. I guess it's alright for what it is.

I didn't really reshape anything - just retexturing/colortwisting.

Lackey that's great!
Evil + helms edits are awesome too. I can't wait to see some more applied pixel-progress (helm: codification? Are we that far gone already? Probably yes...)

@ Niss: Hahaha. Right before I finish mine, you had to come and post the same thing. Ah well, good for style comparisons.

Anyway, the guy reminded me of a fusion between Ridley and the Chozo statues from Metroid (that and and Aardvark.) Natural choice.

I wanted to see if I could make it better using the same number of colours. Got the lightest shade from a pretty much useless extra red in the eye of the original sprite. The legs and feet were confusing on the original, so arms were added and the feet on the side is just additional decoration. Can't really say if that's how it was originally, and I *still* can't say if it's purely a statue or not. I think I missed the part of the description that said 'keep it in the SOFB style', fun practice though.

The turnout is looking excellent so far if I may say so.  :y:

Reinvented bat. Didn't change the design much, just lots more colours. ;)

... and reduced to the original colour count ...

Great entires all around.

About the statue: there's only one in the game.  The sprite right beside it on the sheet?  He busts out of it when you punch it a few times and runs at you.

Yes great entries. That statue is completely tragic. You punch it, it breaks open, frees the beast, you punch it, it falls of the plane like everything else you punch. Tragic I tell you.
