[CC] Grayscale Shading Help?

(1/1)

Sinceriously:
Hi! I figured I needed to get used to using a limited palette, so I tried shading with just 8 shades of gray.

I've also been practicing drawing anatomy.

I guess I'm not really satisfied with his metal arm, since it doesn't look very metal. I was told that metals tended to have a lot of contrast, but it still doesn't look quite metal-y enough. Any thoughts? Also, I'd love to hear how I can shade it better or choose more fitting colors!

MysteryMeat:
Honestly I'd say you just have overexposure issues here. IE, you've been looking at the piece so long that all you can perceive are minor flaws that most people aren't actually going to pick up on.
To me that arm definitely reads as metal, if you want that emphasized more then it might help to put on some kind of reflection or refraction to show it's a shiny reflective surface. However, that may interrupt the Simplicity of the piece as a whole.
