[WIP][C+C] Ravamping old sprites.

on: May 31, 2017, 09:34:04 pm

Hello. I'm in the process of revamping all of these sprites, and I would just like come C+C as I go along. Especially on the portraits.

I'm trying to adhere to the idea of clusters, but I'm very new to working like that.

Looking very good man.  I'm not sure there's much to critique.  I am not crazy about the flesh tones appearing in the clothing but that might just be me.  Keep it up.
Looking to collaborate.  Hit me up, especially if you are a GM programmer, or if you just have some sweet ideas.

I think schwee has a good point, on the butler guy especially it can read like his white sleeves have been ripped.

Latest one. Not sure what I think about the flesh tone criticism. I think it's pretty hard to misread and to me it gives it a more painterly quality. I'm trying to keep the palettes sort of small and only use colors used in the small sprites on the portraits. I'll try some different things on the next one.

I agree about the butler's sleeves looking ripped, but other than that I think the colour reuse is fine. I think if you change the shapes of those shadows, you can remedy the problem without adding colours. You could also just use that darker greenish colour instead of the skin colour, using the skin colour for AA and tips of the narrow folds:

On the knight, I'd use the off-white instead of the beige for the armour highlights. It doesn't contrast too much and makes the knight's form clearer, in my opinion. I'd tone down the amount of texture on that armour. The knight's forms aren't very clear, especially compared to the sprite. The pauldron also looks disconnected from the torso because of that deep shadow.

Hmm now that I see it like that I do think the green works better there. Before I was just trying out swapping the colors but I think changing the shape of the shadow did help it be more clear.

I'm trying to stay away from using AA in that way just as a personal challenge, and with the exception of things like eyes have no single pixels. I find working with the limitations to be very satisfying, but I might rethink that in the future for the sake of simply having better artwork. Here's where I ended up.

I also see what you mean about the knight character, I tested out white as the highlight and I agree I like it much more. I will post an update to him once I fix the readability issue you mentioned.

Really nice work man! How long have you been making pixel art?
