[WIP] Few issues with my Mansion

on: May 14, 2017, 03:08:34 pm
Hi fellow pixel artists,

so I'm trying to go for a victorian themed mansion sprite, the problem is I'm really not sure how to get that 3/4 perspective view.
My next step is to create a roof and I'm not sure how to do that.

I mean I want to create a 3/4 perspective roof but by the looks of it (for me) that's not possible anymore. Im looking at the sprite from the front too much instead of 3/4.

The other thing is the mansion looks a little too pale.. also the bricks seem very repetitive to me.

Here's where I took reference from

I would suggest dropping the windows and doors just a tad, but most rpg houses ( if that's what your going for) have a flat forward front with the 3/4 view roof..
its like looking at a cube with the roof being placed on top of the cube....
hope that made a little sense..

here is an example i pulled just from a quick google search.

WAY too much detail. What works in a normal work of art doesn't always in pixelart, and such a strong glaring pattern of bricks is among the things that doesn't work so good.

Try to tweak the brick pattern to be more impressionistic than literal, meaning reducing some of the details or colors. The off-white is super glary, and I'd reccomend you swap it for a more earthy color that doesn't clash so hard like brown or a darker red.

As a bonus, it'll make the bannisters and awning decor less harsh to look at!

Im going to go ahead and move the second floor windows down a bit.

Thank you Ithink i know how i'll do the roofing, I already made a roof but those images provide me with a better idea.

The thing is when I used that image as reference I noticed that in those times the buildings were build with lengthy bricks how ever with less height of the ones we use today.

I need to think up an idea on how to break that repetitive pattern, in the two houses above the walls seem plastered, with tiles here and there.

I guess what I can do is look for similar sprite art that is using the same type of facebrick and see how they break this plain feel of it.

I'll do that and post an update once I've added a new roof and better walls.

Depending on how old it is, moss and foliage racks could help break it up nicely.
Latticework vine supports and the like, ay?

You could also vary brick colors a bit, make some a darker or lighter red to break up the monotony of the design!
