Snail (C + C)

on: April 25, 2017, 10:50:54 pm

Hi there,
I made this snail a bit ago, and I feel pretty good about the drawing itself, but I'm not crazy about how the animation turned out. I wanted his head to go back/away from the viewer, and then forward/towards the viewer. I'm not really sure how to make that read. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I was also trying the make the shell turn a bit. Do you guys know of any tutorials that help you understand the way something would rotate?

Instead of moving the whole head try to instead subtly change the edge lines and angling on the eyestalks

Revision:

Thank you for the advice. I think this is significantly better, but I feel he's a bit stiff.

Try a full ripple along the bottom edge

Edit: also, for the head, he's tilting unevenly. Doesn't come back towards camera enough.

I was having a lot of trouble visualizing the head angle change, so I decide to try drawing it as a box first. Do you think it's worth it to keep working on this creature, or would my time be better spent doing simpler animation exercises? Or should I try to redraw him completely with the animation in mind? I feel I might be a bit out of my league with this one.

your problem seems to be you going for a way more extreme movement than is really necessary! You want to shoot for just a subtle turn, not a full on WHOO WOAH WHODAT GOTTA SEE IT ALL twist!

First of all, awesome snail! Great work on the color pallet  and the dithering.

In my opinion, the issue that makes the animation look kinda stiff is because of the lighting dynamics.

Take for example the head of the snail, when he turns away from us the angle of light reflection changes, therefor the highlights on his forehead should move slightly backwards. same goes for all the other highlights and shadows in correlation.
This should make the snail seem like he`s more of a 3d object in space.

Nice art, and the animation is a good effort, I have not had much experience myself with animation, in particular pixel art. The others have great suggestions, but I might also suggest rather then having the head go side to side, have it go up and down, as if the snail is using the weight of its head to help it push itself along.  I know this is meant to be in a cartoonish style, but I think perhaps some of the problem why it looks odd is that snails would not push themselves along this way in reality. (like a head "scooping" motion", rather then "dipping"), but without exaggerating the animation, have it subtle.
Anyway good work so far , keep it up :)
