Understanding shading

on: April 06, 2017, 12:15:32 am
I've read the theory, you have to look at the light source and apply it to the object's shape, the farther the darker, different objects take on light on different ways, but in practice the truth is that i feel no matter how good i get at lineart I just can't improve on shading/coloring.  I made this...decent room between yesterday and today:

This is what happened when i tried to start coloring it:

Any advice?

Decent so far. Avoid pillow shading like you've done on the oven overhead though, that's a nasty habit and makes things look softer or dented-in when you don't want that. plus, it usually looks bad!

While it is true that things will be brighter closer to the light source, the more pronounced effect in most cases will be the angle of the surface compared to the light source. A surface angled directly toward the source will be brightest and as it tilts away it will become darker. In a simple lighting scenario a flat surface will be entirely the same shade. Of course real lighting scenarios are rarely simple but I think that is an important concept to understand.
