Feedback, and does this look familiar to you?

on: February 22, 2017, 10:09:59 pm
Hey there!

I'm currently experimenting with new sprites for a game I'm making, after deciding my original one would be too much hassle.
After a bit of messing around, I came up with this, what do you guys think?

To me, something looks kinda off about it. I did struggle with the colors so that may be the reason, but it could be something else that hopefully you may notice.
His head is supposed to have a flame-like animation when finished, but I found it tough to make it look flame like.
The reason I say "flame-like" and not just "flame" is because my idea was that it'd be a form of energy that resembles that of fire, but have more of an alien feel to it(if that even makes sense  )
Oh, also, maybe its just my imagination but it looks kinda familiar to something. I don't want that to be the case if I end up using it, what do you think?
Thanks. ;D

I think it's the scale! Head's too big even for a chibi, try either thickening the body or shrinking the head!
You should also apply lighting from his flame to his armpr and equipment!

Thanks for the reply. :)

That didn't cross my mind with it being deliberately not to scale, but I think I agree so I'll give it a shot.
I'm not great at lighting, so it'll be tough for me to get it to look shaded and still keep the parts visibly separated, but I'll try; I do think that would make it look better.
Did the colours look right to you?

Most of it's pretty dark, but in this case that helps serve the luminous head a bit. Remember, just add a bit of blue light to the bits that'd be in direct lines from his head, the way i think about it is light's just a big paintsplatter that wraps around from wherever the source or sources are!

I ended up discovering why it looked so familiar to me; it was because it vaguely looked like the player in this video. They don't look that similar, but it was enough for me to notice something looked familiar.
