Human face anatomy and light

on: January 19, 2017, 09:35:49 pm
Hello, Pixelation! :P
I am wanting some advice about my first attempt at trying to do a human face :-\

The palette option I choose was the base which fool uses in all his artworks(I choose it because to me it seems like a nice non-grayscale way to get light correct and then work with colours after).

first thing first is definitely anatomy.

my advice would be start bigger, use a reference and draw the outlines first.

work on the 'sketch' first, the contours, and give it a bit more interesting position and perspective. try going 3/4 view to really understand how the face shapes the front of the head

Thanks for the advice, I'll take it into consideration when I try again at drawing a face  ;)

I think I messed up the most by using to different types of faces as references and trying to use both in the drawing, I'll take a photo of someone in real life and then try next time.

What are the two lumps in the forehead supposed to be? Look a bit hellboy- ish.
Well, your problem is a drawing problem not so much a pixel art problem. I recommend looking at the basic Loomis stuff and what not. The first thing you could do is to divide the face into thirds. Check out this video on how:

Also I don't think you're quite ready yet to invent light sources. Pick one reference and stick to it :)

I think you're on the right track. Try to simplify further, draw some skulls to get a better feel for the underlying structures, notably brow and jawlines!
PSA: use imgur

Thanks for the comment MysteryMeat (Cool Name, lol)

That's a good idea! I think I'll try that next so I get the correct proportions in the cheeks, nose and forehead(maybe ears as well ???).

A quick sketch for you. Some things are off, but should serve as a decent example.
Pictures are worth a thousand words.

Also : If you're serious about learning anatomy and/or drawing, I'll also suggest moving to pencil and paper, pixelart isn't the best medium to get your fundamentals in place.
