Struggling newb

on: December 09, 2016, 09:10:34 pm
Maybe this looks a bit sad, but I can't flesh out a body for any of these dudes.. especially the tree guy. Everything I do looks wonky or disproportionate. I have weird creation issues like these, probably because I'm bad, but is there any way I can not be bad? :) Anything to help me out here. Also I tried posting in gray but they disappeared in they greyness so..

Construct with basic lines and shapes first. Draw a circle around the size you want the chest then a line about where you want the hips and draw the legs and arms like stick figures and then just shift those around until the proportions look good to you and draw your character over the top.

Uhh I cant explain much more than what was said above. Here. Its uhhh, usally how I start my pixels, with shapish sticks and lines. Sometimes I over detail the faces so, thats fine. Uhhmmm Probably animate then while they are still sticks, otherwise youll be like me and spend hours on it.

Example.

This seems like a problem with poor basics, honestly.
Do some art studies (figure drawing especially, there's guides for this on youtube!), try to break the torso and various other parts down into basic shapes rather than just doing stick figures. It'll give you a more solid base to work from when you move on to finals.
There's an entire forum masterpost here about the basics of art and pixel-art especially, check it out here!

[plug]Don't forget to post in the Daily Sketch, OT-Creativity, or Anatomy thread[/plug]

Seriously, throw your stuff down somewhere where you can get valid feedback on it. Even if you don't get the feedback, you have a clean record of your progress. When you can see how much you've improved and your exact strengths and weaknesses, you get motivated to improve more and to work smarter.

I think a great advice is that pixel-art isn't separate from the rest of the art world. Basic knowledge of form, structure, perspective and so on is necessary in painting as much as pixel art.

So I wouldn't suggest you start drawing pixel-art if you haven't go a lot of experience in the more basic art forms - just drawing. In essence, pixel-art is stylization. If you'll know how to draw and construct a human shape with pen and paper, chances are you'll be able to do the same in low resolution pixel-art.
