Shading help.

So, this is my first attempt at shading. Any advice for a beginner

This guy looks very cylindric.
So give him a third color that is half the way between the others.

If your light source is the sun, then your light source is coming from above. the only way your light source could be on the right is if its a lamp or a sunset.

If you had a natural light source the shading should look something like this
