all of these look great so far!

vedsten, i like your cypress, though i dont know if it really captures the feeling of the original piece, or of the pixel-twist?  perhaps if you turned it into something like a mario castle it would work better :P
A mistake is a mistake.
The same mistake twice is a bad habit.
The same mistake three or more times is a motif.

This is "open end" here, right?
Mia your piece is really clever (well in my eyes anyways) !

There are no ugly colours, only ugly combinations of colours.

@adarias - eh, might've misundstood the rules, thought a re-interpretation of a masterpiece in pixels where enough, if it isn't, this update ain't gonna help. A mario castle would be kewl tho  :y:

@CAG - thanks, here you go:

im not a 100% satisfied, the colors are kinda boring (not to mention there're too many), the contrast is BLEHH and the shading style's somewhat inconsistant, never the less, i learned a lot doing it, so i can leave it be w. good conscience.

It's beautiful, Vedsten! I know for seasoned artists the techniques can be old hat, but I think this is a well composed piece. Great lighting on the swirling ether around the star and the terrain is also well lit.

I chose Peter Paul Rubens as the master I would remaster. In particular, his Hippopotamus Hunt:

Original:

My entry:

It's probably 29 colors. I started with a mostly preselected palette, but added as I felt necessary. My goal was to liven up the color of the work, starting with the hippo itself. I stopped short of going all-out with a korean-esque watercolor rainbow and found a great compromise that allowed me to maintain some of the richness in the flesh tones. I didn't focus on accuracy to the extent of perfectly matching the correlating figures, so you might notice a few inconsistencies... I have some WIP shots I might post later. Think it's done, so crit if you want.

Gorgeous Pep! Gorgeous!

Even though the purple kills my eyes, the palette is very well chosen. It just.. emulates the effect of paint. I'd love to see this in a seperate thread with the WIPs. Put in treasure chest!

@Pep: That's officially my favourite piece of pixel art. Love it to death. And only 29 colors. :y: You've inspired me.
@Vedsten: That looks really cool. Really like how the sky looks, as well as the dithering on the mountain. Not really digging the AA on the moon, though. :-X
