the other thing is you can use a flat color or a gradient or something

The original Doom / Doom 2 didn't, it's only the newer ports that behave differently.

we've been making games a long time though, there's been lots of improvements on the old designs

I take it this was in reply to my post. You are remembering stuff wrong.
These are 2 screenshots I just took running Doom2.exe ver. 1.9 in DOSBox

There is substantial distortion towards the edges of the screen.

There are no ugly colours, only ugly combinations of colours.

holyshit. what ptoing said. this will happen at every corner of the box and not just this one we can see here

its to do with the camera fov and the fact that its on a box. if you do a sphere you'll get less of it, but still there will me distortion as it gets to the edges of the screen. again because of lens distortion.
Image size doesn't matter! It's what you do with your pixels that counts!

yeah, then we're talking about field of view and compensating for it and all this stuff. 3d camera maths is hard, i give up. i prefer ortho
