Forum Smilies - (UPDATED RULES!)

on: May 02, 2006, 02:02:29 am
Alrighty - Here is the official forum smilies thread!  Heres how it works...

Everybody pitch in to create some smilies for the forum.  The ones the pixelopolis staff likes best will get integrated into the forum.  If yours is not chosen, no need to get upset, just ask how it can be fixed.  Rules are pretty simple;

1) Try to keep it within a 22 by 22 pixel space.  Sure there can be acceptions, but its alot cleaner if they're all uniform
2) Try to keep a limited and constant pallette with the other smilies.  (there is already starting to be a problem with this) and yes, there are acceptions to this too, however try not to go overboard. (and please keep in the GIF format so the colours dont shift)
3) Give as much C+C you can to improve all smilies posted.  Hopefully all of them can be integrated into the forum
4) dont expect credit to be given whenever somebody posts a smiley once integrated.  By posting these here, you are allowing pixelopolis to do with as they please with your piece.

here are the ones already created:  (with and without outline + AA)

My compy is reading a 21 colour count which doesn't seem right to me.  If somebody wants to help me bring that down a bit, that'd be greatly appriciated.

current contributors:
Indigo, TinyGiant, Larwick, Tremulant, Naso, Akira, Zolthorg, MrMean

get crackin!

UPDATED RULES=============================================
Alright guys - the cutoff date for this project is now June 30th.  That gives you guys 15 days to fit in some more smiley pixellin' skillz.  After which, as said before, the pixelopolis staff will choose which ones they like best and they will get utilized into the forum.  If yours did not get utilized - dont feel too bad, because we will continue to have smiley activities every few months (i'm thinking bi-annually, but it's not exactly set).  A mini competition will be held in which anybody can sumbitt a new smiley with their own distinct style, and then we will vote on which style we'd like to use.  A new style will be selected and we will start all over once again.

have fun and lets get some more smilies on-board.

down to 13 colours including background.

Smileys with edited colours:
3rd row, 4th from left - blush used two unneeded (IMO) colours
4th row, 4th from left - lips used three unneeded (IMO) colours
Various other colours were edited to match the other smileys (like the yellows and greys)

sorry if disagrees with my edits, feel free to change them back. We should try to keep the pallete updated with any new colours though.
thanks Dogmeat!

heh I present the YUS expression. Don't think anyone would have a use for this, but it was momentarily fun to do. The color choice is crazy, but ment to work on 1x zoom anyway.

Sorry for putting new colours in...I tried with the red we had there, but it was too light...

Helm, I don't know what YUS is supposed to mean, but the smiley is awsome!

EDIT:

Did another and edited the devil one so it has less colours. Actually, one colour less. And the left one is just a base I'm using.

Ok, i got ftp access now and i will start uploading and setting up a new theme this weekend. Will prolly take a while since i have to cut the smilies apart and name them all, but i have some freetime coming up so they should be latest be up and running sometime next week.

About what will be taken and what not. I will go after 2 things mainly, being same style (close to what indigo did as a start) and actuall emoticon, so stuff like that red ball thing or the naruto character prolly wont cut it. Perhaps later on, but first i will implement what makes the most sense.

Hey indigo, i like that idea with having biannual smiley contests. But instead of just setting a default one we can make the members choose the smiley set. There can be more than one and everyone can use what he likes best. That would pretty much require the same smileys for every set tho.

I think what's being said, though, is that we're all members of the community here, freely giving our work to be used as part of the community, thus handing over 'ownership' to the mods. the smilies are, I think, meant to give the board more of a comfortable, unique (for lack of a better word) feeling. Like, they're something unique that the members contributed, and as such the boards become more personalized, more like a, well, community. So yeah, it's up to the mods, cause we gave up out work to them. No one took our rights, we gave up our pieces willingly.

Didn't mean that to sound as ranty as it might come off. Just voicing my thoughts on the matter. I'd say, though, if you want custom smilies for your boards, I'd, like, ask around, see if any of the members can contribute anything. That way you'd have a more unique site anyway. :)

this activity is now closed as of the 30th.  The mods will now discuss which smilies will be implimented into the forum.  New smiley rounds will be held every so often (most likely bi-annually) which consists of 2 seperate events each.

event 1:
anybody can submit a smiley in their own style within the designated time limit.  At the end of that time, the community will vote on which style they will use for event 2

event 2:
much like we have done here, people then submit all of the different emoticons in that designated style for use in the forum.  you would then have the option to choose which smiley set you'd like to use on the forum as we gain more and more collections of them. (much like choosing a skin for the forum)

more details will come in future months. for now, great work everybody with the smilies! they all look great.  I wish i could have contributed more myself, but i'm actually out of town on vacation right now.  these things will hopefully be implimented soon.

It's been two years.. but nothing was heard. They could not wait any second longer or war would break out. There just had to be another way.. But what? Then suddenly, a young girl with big blue eyes came to him and said: "We are what we are, ..

DOOMED!"

I know it's not correct, but hope it inspires someone to get up and get the c64 set done. Unless I could do it........

Why do people insist upon attacking me... it's not like I said "You LAZY muthaF#%*ERS, DO THE F&*&ING WORK, GOD DAMN IT, I F*#%ING KILL YOUR ASS!!!!!"

I meant it in the nicest way.

Werewolf, how old are you?

If i didnt know better i would have thought that you were the immature one by that comment.
Usualy its people who are slightly above that despised 12-14 years that try to pick on the younger people by insulting their age to sound older.
Nothing against you but its a wellknown fact that age has nothing to do with childishness.

Bo, my question is a honest one. I am asking for his age.

So then:

What's it to you? Do you have some issue that you want to bring to my attention? I checked your message history and it seems all you've contributed to this forum so far is a load of attitude. Please amend this situation as soon as possible. Thank you.

attitude. only if honest opinions are counted as attitude. why have people become so hostile against my opinions since i returned to this forum?

what i said in my post was also honest. I just dont see what his age would have to do with anything.

1. Bo, consider your usage of this forum, we're making art here if you didn't notice
2. Your honest opinions seem a lot like bitching to me. Helm was very polite and politically correct when he used the term attitude
3. Since you returned? Your presence on pixelation has always been controversial. I wish this was your second or even third chance of making it up to some people
4. No need to reply to this post, I'm going to try and ignore your presence and pray to the heathen gods that your stay won't be longer than the last couple of times

And Werewolf:

Stuff doesn't happen in a day here on Pix', it never has. We're currently experiencing one of the best administration teams Pixelation has seen to date, with a culmination of talent and maturity. Please show us those same qualities as the moderation is giving back to you. I'm sure there's a very nice and pro-active member inside you.
