There's a pretty big problem here too in that the characters seem out of mesh with the props. Where the props are very detailed and have high colorcounts, the characters seem to be simplified and anime-styled and it is clashing pretty harshly with the rest of the world.
To use one of your mentioned inspirations as an example, look at how detailed they made the overworld sprite here:

While I always felt the shading makes him look kind of like a wooden nutcracker doll, the way it fit in with the rest of the world made the whole way more cohesive despite the simplicity of it.
That said, he did still stick out pretty bad due to color choices and the strong shadows, as seen here:

Too slow, I removed two frames and fixed a frame where the knee froze slightly and another where the leg wasn't extending enough in preparation for contact with ground!

I'm not really getting an attack out of that, looks more like just a dash.
I'd extend the slash motion trail between the dash to give it more visual impact.

(not sure how to avoid it transforming/deforming at different angles)

Unfortunately not much choice but to redraw them frame by frame.

I'd say do what you did with the intro to the whole game. Remove light fixtures and furniture and replace them with drawings, the intro has a nice popup book feel that could work with the rest of the game too.

P.S. I would look up works that are similar to yours and learn what makes them good and readable
I'd recommend hyper light drifter for that. Similar palettes and cartooniness to it.

He's missing a shoulder! as for the shirt, you're going overboard with the folding! Take a look at how the folds in this silk shirt here look:

I used a silk shirt here as an example, since the glossiness makes it easier to pick out the folds. The thing with shirts is that, unless the arms are raised or positioned in some way other than down, the upper chest will mostly be smooth.

Great work! This is all looking much more unified, the way you put in props as 2d drawings really helps sell it.

hairstyle that short wouldn't cast much of a shadow, that's usually reserved for longer/crazier styles. Try to tweak the face outline too, it gives it a chunky look that I don't think is quite working here.

It's good to stay with pieces yeah, without doing that you don't get full pieces done as best they can be.
but not everyone learn best that way. Some gotta apply that knowledge to a fresh canvas or it doesn't stick as good in their head, and for practice works that's perfectly fine.
