Pixel Art / Re: Hue Shifting / Color Choice [opinions requested]

I wasn't aware of that Chironyx, thanks for pointing it out to me, I'll play around with both styles and see which one looks better :)

yrizoud, omitting the outline entirely had not crossed my mind and it seems to make a lot of sense, I'll definitely be applying that, and yes that's an aquarium, needs some work :D

Regarding light sources in games, I'm looking at hyper light drifter and I can't seem to 'see' their light source being applied, but rather the shading applied is to maintain the shape of their sprites, not sure if maybe it's my beginner eyes not being able to spot this!

Pixel Art / Hue Shifting / Color Choice [opinions requested]
« on: September 06, 2017, 02:54:55 pm »
I'm trying to get better at choosing colors that look good because at the moment I'm hopeless :)

I've been reading up on color theory and watching some videos on the topic (found out that regular drawing differs from pixel drawing in certain aspects of hue shifting - such as increasing the saturation when going darker rather than decreasing)

Anyway.. I've fixed up an image and I'm quite satisfied with the colors, would like to hear what you think, there is no light source. (are light sources used in games? I think that limits your piece to certain situations?)

Thanks for reading :)

Thank you so much for such a detailed explanation and for the great examples, these will definitely help me!

I see now that my biggest mistake was thinking that the camera should cast some dim light, rather than working solely with whatever light source is in the scene. I'll try some simple shade shading like you recommended.

Thanks again.

Pixel Art / First Timer - Attempt at a pixel bed w/ sheets (side view)
« on: August 25, 2017, 09:31:18 am »
Hey, everyone!

The last time I posted was in January (kind of fell off the wagon) but I'm back at it again.
I was wondering if I could get some critique on this bed, I tried to draw it without using a reference.

Two things are bugging me:

1) The color palette so I might need to read up on some color theory :D
2) I'm not sure I got my shading right, it's a side view, so would it be brighter in the middle of the mattress? Since there's the sheet on top I'm not entirely sure.

@Double7 Oh wow that does add some depth to it , thanks for the tip man, I'll start adding that to my workflow. Thanks for your nice comments!

@MysteryMeat Yeah that light I added near the end, I'll either rework the shadows like you recommended or simply take it out of the scene :)

Pixel Art / First Timer - Workshop

A simple workshop, tried to avoid pillow shading , have I done any better? :)

Thinking about desaturating the background since it will be only decor in game, maybe darkening it might have the effect I'm after.
