Thanks guys. I see what you mean, I need to decide how that area is structured. It's supposed to be some kind of incubated courtyard of advertisements. I'll define it more and remember the proper lighting when I redraw it. Will post an update soon.

Hey guys, I'm working on this concept for a point and click adventure game. I want to define the mood of this universe in the game (there is an alternative brighter, happier universe too). I'm having difficulty unifying the background with the foreground. Was wondering if anyone had any tips or suggestions about that?

pretty cool,  but why don't you finish the last piece? And if you know what you want to change/improve, you should just make those changes on this instead of starting yet another one. You won't train yourself in a discipline of refinement if you don't, and you'll end up with dozens of piece you feel are half finished or mediocre.

I think, just hint at the texture and make some larger blank areas, like you did with the steps.

I like the smaller scale one lol. But they are both awesome. I guess if you are going to get more picky about that dither instead of finishing the game, well.. you won't finish it.

It's not so much you messed up, in fact you have some really creative ideas. It's just your rendering could be improved. For example, the front of the face feels very flat. Here is a quick skull approximation I painted when I was studying anatomy which I think will show you what I mean in terms of lighting the form:

For just about every thing else you ever draw, you will be rendering some variation of the following forms in 3d space, so it would pay to practice them. At least, it helped me:

you should use more reference images or practice some drawing from life

I think these are all good. Can you post your "hideous" attempts and we can try to help you improve those?
