General Discussion / Re: Pixelation's Future
« on: September 01, 2022, 08:28:04 am »
I'm sorry to hear this as well, although I understand the reasons behind it. First time when Secret Santa was transferred to PJ it was clear that forum is on its last breath.

Hanging out here were some of the best times I've had with pixel art in general and I've learned some important things. So far I was never able to find similar "pixel energy" so I want to tank you everyone and to wish best luck to all who contributed in any way to this great place. :)

Best regards.

magickbird I'm glad you like it. :)

HarveyDentMustDie was result of few failed attempts to find available user name on Deviant Art over around 10 years ago, so it's a sort of mash up of ideas which worked and stayed over the years. :)

Merry Christmas and happy holidays to everyone. :) Even though list of santas was shorter this year invested effort is definitely visible.

orangemagik thank you so much, it's a great piece like all your drawings. Dithering and color blends are just stunning, I'm honored. :D

Merry Christmas to everyone. ;D I feel bad since this is the first Secret Santa I've missed, it just slipped my mind due to personal obligations.

There's many great gifts here, Dex and Ilkke killed it as usual, orangemagik and aamatniekss made very appealing compositions, but that tent Jeremy did stuck in my head, I've had to go back to it. :)

Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] House interior, door problem

@eishiya I've just tried to offer possible solution regarding overall impression of the whole scene. It's not properly detailed edit and I agree that there's room for further improvement, I just didn't had more time for it. Feel free to edit it further. :)

@startselect

1. I would say practice with proper references is best approach. It's enough to draw one plank or beam of wood properly would bring you better understanding of wood structure for your second drawing. You don't even have to draw it with purpose of directly using it for a game, just draw it on it's own as a form of preparation and then try to apply that to the scene. As @eishiya said different details or characteristics may be disregarded in different situations to make it work for specific perspective, size, distance from watcher etc. so you should mostly have idea how texture should look and then find a way to make it work.

My wood edit is mostly on the door and even that is not very carefully done, everything else is just removing the noise and smaller details.

Pixel art is form of compressing visual information while still keep it recognizable. Learning from other pixel drawings may give you some hints of how some things can be handled but I think you will learn much more by trying to replicate actual photo reference. Even if you "fail" don't worry, just try again it will be better. :)

2. Honestly I didn't do any special, just played with colors a bit to make it work. @eishiya explained hue-shifting so I would just additionally recommend testing it out in different occasions and after some time you will get used to experiment with bigger color shifts. I've learned it over time and I can't say that I know ton of things about color, it's a very broad topic and for me true masters are traditional painters cause there's no color adjustment option there, with digital you can always change and adjust until it looks right without any harm to the piece.

If you are not sure how to start, even if everything sounds quite simple, you can sample colors from drawings you like and look at color wheel or color "square" to see where those colors are approximately and analyze it, after some time you will see some pattern in all greatness. :) Also there's never a right way, you will find your own approach.

Girl characters are great, you've done a great job. Secondary male characters have good poses as well and it contributes to overall dynamic shadow approach, but main white haired character appears very stiff and I would experiment with his pose to create better composition and solution.

Here's the fast edit created with idea of making it a bit more readable. :)

Hi, you've already got some nice advice and made progress from your first attempt.

Here's my attempt to make an edit of it, hope it helps. :)

PS If skin complexion was intended to be dark then I've made a mistake during the change but you can change that yourself.

I've helped a bit with cloth here, just to push you back on the road. Basically I can polish this one completely and define everything but it's best that you do it on your own since it will help you with future designs.

When you add shadows on the cloth it's not idea to just put it on the bottom. Darker shade represents something that's underneath in this case since light source is mostly up and behind, but there are positions where you can't see what's underneath, in such frames you don't have to use dark color just to keep it consistent, it destroys motion.

Also same situation in legs, in order to keep consistency you keep adding shadow on top of the leg even when it's in front of the character and more or less a bit better lighted than when that area is in position under the body. Maybe I've reduced it too much, but you get the point.

There's one thing here which should be solved as well if you want realistic rendering. Shadow on the chest area is caused by light from behind, which is ok, but then legs don't match that since close leg doesn't change tone as it goes front to back and opposite, but that's now design decision. Nobody can force you to be "realistic". ;)
