Pixel Art / Novelty Christmas Wreath Cursor!
« on: November 18, 2012, 10:09:48 pm »
I forgot all about pixel art for years. But I've been taking art classes and learning a bit about color theory and shading.

So to celebrate the holiday season, I've made a Christmas wreath cursor!
Crits welcome. took like five minutes. I'm not happy with some of the AA yet but I like the colors.
Thinking I might make the bow a bight brighter, and potentially add a white border for clarity against all backgrounds.

General Discussion / non-exclusive AA
« on: June 16, 2009, 01:35:33 am »
For those of you who own Vista, you know that for modern programs there's these super-biff icons with kick arse AA.  But that anti-alaising seems to change depending on what's behind it.  I don't understand how that works.  How would I make an icon that has anti-alaising that perfectly matches whatever is behind it?  Does anyone know about this?  Is it programming?  Does Vista automatically do this?

what's up with that?

btw I'm not completely sure what non-exclusive means, so I hope the title isn't misleading.  If it is, please tell me what I could use instead...   :ouch:  I suck with English.

General Discussion / What's wrong with my art?
« on: May 28, 2009, 03:07:26 pm »
You guys know me.  I lurk around, often posting critique or edits.  And I rarely post topics of my own.  (Sorry in advance for pig-headed comment:) I often surprise myself with the quality of edits I give out.  I usually can spot what's wrong with something immediately.  But I suck at originals.

Whenever I draw something from scratch/reference, it turns out..  just....  wrong.  I don't even no what's wrong with it.  It's dead, lifeless.  Flat.  Boring.  I can post examples here if you like.  Open discussion; I just want to know some things:
Did this even happen to you, either at random times or is/was a consistent problem at any time?
How do you guys make this awesome stuff from scratch?  Where's the magic touch?  I know all about theory already, but when execution comes...  *shudder*
Anything else you have to say.

Thanks,
Shrike

General Discussion / Windmarked Pixels

Hah, bet that title caught your attention.   >:D
..
*Cough*
I've been chewing on this one idea for quite a bit of time now.  It's gone through several stages in my head, but this is the closest it's gotten to a complete thingy.  It's my own set of restrictions; they wouldn't be due to limitations of hardware, but I think they're interesting anyways.  Feel free to brainstorm, dethrone, spin-off or whatever else you want; just an idea right now.
Meant for making large scenery.
Further Explanation

This is a set of restrictions that you could choose to apply when you are drawing Pixel art.  Tests are below.  It would be somewhat similar to drawing in the restrictions of an old system; i.e. EGA colors, NES Pallette and restrictions, etc.

LINE DRAWING MODE
The suckiest name in the galaxy

-All deliberately drawn lines MUST be either horizontal ( ------ ) or vertical ( | ).
-Only three colors may be used: Black, white, and an exact 50% color of your choice.*  Changed.  Color restrictions were too harsh.  You may now choose any two colors, but there is still black and white as the first two out of four.
-Perpendicular lines must be 1px apart.
-Background color can be exempt from rules 1 & 3.
-Large spaces may be solid in color, as long as it contains no detail.
-Dithering is encouraged.
-Checkerboard dither is allowed.
-If two colors are different, they need not be separated by the 1px rule.

*Sample 50% colors (Actually I think these are the only possible ones):

Choose any two colors you wish.
I have yet to test it out.  Really, I'm posting this for crits.  Thoughts?  How stupid is it?
Thanks,
Shrike

Pixel Art / The Living Sketch
« on: April 26, 2009, 07:30:03 pm »
The pixels! THEY LIVE!

It's been too long since I've actually pixeled something.  Also, my avatar is simplistic and regular.  So, in light of both these things, obviously the natural step is to make an oddly colored face that has weird lines in the back because I'm too lazy to draw the rest!
- Early Sketch
- After nice critique from Larwick via YIM, and Anti-alaised for the background color
Critique please; Anatomical, execution-wise, color wise, just not design wise..   I like how it is.
Thanks in advance, and help me get my mouse back into shape!

Do you like Graphics Gale or ProMotion better?  Why?  I've always used Graphics Gale, but after watching several of Helm's awesome videos which he did in ProMotion I though ProMotion is more powerful, but I'm finding the interface and shortcuts seriously cumbersome.  Specifically, I'd like to have the right-click be a color dropper, as this was immensely useful in GG, but I can't find the shortcut in the preferences.  Is there an other shortcut for it?

Post here please, keystroke help or which program you prefer.  I'd be willing to pay the money for the ProMotion Full, although, I want to know if it's worth it or not.  Help?

Thanks!

Pixel Art / [WIP]Marine
« on: January 15, 2009, 03:58:09 pm »
Here's something a little more serious, which will be harder than the past stuff, little smallish sprite thingies.  It's an old Marine, or some sea-faring general person.  Whatever the case, he looks worn, or at least old.  No ear because I'm going to add a hat, which I'm avoiding.  Bandanna?  Coolish pirate hat?  Not sure, but enough talk, here it is:
First WIP: (  :-[ )

Crit me hard, this is my first actual piece.  I usually just do spritework.  Are there glaring anatomical issues?  colors issues?  Anything!  Btw, I didn't use a ref, just my own personal facial experience.

Pixel Art / Eyeball cursor
« on: January 14, 2009, 08:33:44 pm »
Hey.

I've been bored so I made this eyeball, which came out rather ok.  I'm planning on using it as a cursor, but there's a main problem of it's not round and it's not well shaded.  I already have a million colors, so adding more isn't super exiting but as there's no restrictions it doesn't matter.  I'm scared to find out how many I have now, please don't eat me. if you find out.  Anyway, here 'tis:

Couple of problems:
Shading on the white of the eye is bad, how would I fix?
I've thoughtlessly AAed the outside, and damn Windows Vista adds a shadow to the cursor.   >:(  I'll fix in the next update...
And, uh, how do I make it look like an eyeball?

Thanks!

Pixel Art / Wolf in profile
« on: December 13, 2008, 06:57:34 pm »
Hey.

This is seriously (I think,) my first delve into something actually artistic when it comes to pixel art. I was mainly focusing on animation and spriting. I've been really sick lately, so I've been spending lots of time on the computer. When in was lurking around here, I was looking through the palette challenges and found the black and white Shark challenge thingy. All of the entries were fantastic, and extremely pretty. I started making my own shark one, and the night sky was by far the best part of it. I redid it today, but with a wolf in profile instead.

Now, i actually have 4 colors, because I'm a sucker for perfect Anti-Alaising. Ok. Here goes. Before you look at it, and before you slam me with "The wolf looks like holy crap" crits, i know. It just found a reference picture*, and I know it currently looks like a hairy seal with a funky head. I'm fixing it now! Originally the creature thing was really just weird random lines and shaded and dithered for dithering practice, because is suck at dithering.

Ok.
Here goes:
Current: I'm not sure about the eye, it looks off to me. I had to add 2 colors, two shades a yellow. Maybe make it red? what do you all think?

General Discussion / Dithering tutorial?
« on: December 04, 2008, 04:07:22 pm »
Hey,

I've been around here for a little bit, and i've never really been told how to dither effectively. Can anyone link me to something or, if i'm not being a snot, make one? I've always been curious about it, since i know there are way more techniques than my bland 1x1 pixel checkerboard pattern. If there are any rules of thumb or anything, could you post them here?
Thanks in advance.

Cheers!
Shrike
