Pixel Art / Help with untitled game project!
« on: November 03, 2015, 11:18:13 pm »
Hey WotP, having a bit of trouble right now with a project I'm working on. Here's my most recent tileset for the "Mines" biome.

The problem I'm facing is that this is a procedural generated game and I'm not at all experienced with 16x16 tiles so this is really hitting me hard. I'm trying to figure out a style that is easy to reproduce, and relatively nice looking. Appreciate any advice that you guys can give me!
I'm not that concerned if I can't make this look like chasm (which, I know is impossible at my level), but there's games like Nuclear Throne with okay art but they still look fun and engaging -something I can't seem to get right with these tiles.

I've also been thinking that my problem might be how I'm arranging the tiles, so this was a quick test with some of the current assets that I overlayed on chasms screencap here http://media.indiedb.com/images/downloads/1/54/53944/chasm6.png Obviously, this isn't the problem :/

This is an older mockup.

Experimenting with warmer colours, thinking that doing such a cold looking environment isn't the way to go.

I should also mention that my programmer has got a killer destructible terrain mechanic going on, and for that reason I am limited to making everything underneath the top tiles 1 colour -except for little details like broken skulls, bones or little rock formations (pretty much in the same way that towerfall does their tiles).

tl;dr
halp

just throwing this in here for fun, enemy for the game.

Pixel Art / Portrait Help
« on: May 12, 2015, 06:02:16 pm »
Something I've been struggling with for around 2 - 3 weeks. It's a portrait of an internet friend (ref http://i.imgur.com/HnzYXmb.jpg)

Atm, I'm having a lot of trouble with colours, the palette is really annoying and not very interesting (bland?). I can't quite seem to get his likeness to read well in the piece though, really can't find what I'm missing. Any tips on what I should change with the colour and face? I realize that since my lighting is different than the ref, it won't look quite like him, but right now it doesn't look recognizable to him in any way.

Here's a few other versions, I really dislike the palettes on these ones, but the face seems to look more like the ref.

Here's all my progress so far on one canvas.

Pixel Art / Dark Creature Attack/Walk animations
« on: April 20, 2015, 05:15:42 pm »
Hello pixelation! Recently I've been trying my hand at animating an attack that is to be used for a enemy in a game. Unfortunately the enemy has to be a plain silhouette, which personally I'm not happy with, but the person I'm doing this for thinks it will emphasize on it looking more creepy and evil (which I disagree with but that's the restriction).

Here are two version which I have made, but I can't get around them looking shitty.

The problem that I've run into with the first animation is that it's too boring. He swings up, and then down and it's not a very interesting thing to look at. I tried doing something different with the second one but it also doesn't look right. I was thinking that maybe I should ditch both animations and make him do a different attack all together? Looking for any critcism and suggestions that anyone is willing to throw my way.

Here's what my walk cycle looks like, I'm more or less happy with it and my collaborator/programmer is satisfied with it too, but any suggestions to improve it will be more than helpful.

Any c&c would be more than appreciated!
