Pixel Art / Project Kitsune Colour Help!
« on: July 01, 2016, 06:45:16 am »
Hello Pixelation,

It's been a little while but i could use your pixely help!

I've been working on a freelance job, with the working title of Project Kitsune, It's a story driven platformer set in japan.

We are looking to make the over all pallet more coherent and charming.

Original far too many colour pallet:

An attempt at adjusting things down to 64:

I'm struggling a bit between "true colours" blowing the pallet out and a more minimal stylized pallet making things potentially look strange.

I'de love if you had any suggestions, also general over all crits of the scene/assets would be fine as well! For reference the background is tiled to make building generation easy.

There is also a general flatness that i could use some help with. But please keep scope in mind with your crits here.

(Also all signage in Japanese is going to go through a translation pass so it all means gibberish atm).

Thanks in advance!~

Pixel Art / Alco's Process Thread 2.0 (dirty tools!)
« on: March 02, 2015, 07:45:34 am »
I was going to necro an old thread of mine (http://wayofthepixel.net/index.php?topic=17198.0) but it seems it's made it into good reads, and i'm nothing but happy about that. :)

So I suppose it's time for sketchthread 2.0, though things are a little less sketchy this time round so maybe process is a better word. The emphasis is changing a little in this one, as I'm making things a touch smaller and more focused on design. I really didn't like the space knight piece in that last thread, it's sheer size meant i spent waay to much time cleaning lines and it scared me away from the process for awhile, but I think i've broken back into things with this shifted direction.

Essentially i'm still trying to let a loose early sketching process generate a certain amount of workable chaos, or happy accidents. This is something I generally enjoy in mediums like ink, pencil or paint and I find this is a phenomena normally lost in pixel art. From that point I'm looking to focus on pallet and design and refine things into something more finished then I was previously going for.

Edit:
Current work

Okay, that aside, lets start with some gay

Current Edit:

Happy with this so far, but I've reached a bit of a dead end and I know it could be better. Crits/Edits welcome.

I've also got a WIP for something after the above piece, vaguely NSFW for anatomies sake, i'll add clothes later.
.
Current Edit:

I'de love to hear some thoughts.

Pixel Art / Tileset and Trees
« on: February 08, 2015, 03:15:38 pm »
Hey gang,

Working ON a tileset for a freelance gig, beyond a few minor touches i'm pretty happy with the tileset itself, but the trees i've just not been feeling at all.

newest:

(shadows are very WIP)

Any suggestions with the trees in particular would be super welcome. Having them be slightly cartoony and textured at the same time is proving challenging. Colour suggestions also very welcome.

Pixel Art / [WIP] Enchanted Room
« on: January 08, 2015, 01:49:06 pm »
Hello All,

So I'm trying to get this all polished up, eventually it's going to be a full mockup but for now i'm just trying to complete the room.

Current Edit:

A little hard to read but its a dungeon room giving way to something more fairytale-esque if that gives some context.

Still a ton to do, but I thought this might be a good stage to iron out compositional issues or pallet issues. (or anything else)

Looking forward to your thoughts :)

Pixel Art / Animated Portrait
« on: November 29, 2014, 03:04:04 pm »
Hey guys,

I did this test animation a little while ago

I since then have been planning to make a higher quality more complex version, just as a kind of exercise to break into animation and see what I can do.

I might ask for this thread to be moved to the animation section eventually, but for the moment i'm just trying to get a polished look down that I can then get moving. (so I don't find myself wanting to change the style on the 5th frame or something). Here is what I have so far:

latest update:

A little rough but I think you can kind of tell what i'm going for. Really looking for some structural or style crits if you have them, I want to get this portrait down before I move on to, well, movement.

Hello Pixelation,

So I've been doing these pixel sketches, they are kind of a halfway point between pixel pushing and sketching on paper, and I thought, seeing as I'm doing a ton and plan to do a ton more, I'd start a thread for it here.

I hope firstly that this style is acceptable for these forums, i'm not being overly messy, but i'm not being particular traditional either. To justify my approach I would say that the reductional nature of pixel line work means a lot of the distracting elements from other mediums (such as line weight) can be circumvented or controlled manually. As well, The fact that you're encouraged to work with a single clean line means you can focus a lot of energy on what a single given line is achieving,  and edit to a very fine degree.

For whatever reason with the process of refinement i find myself losing much less energy when working on these pieces then compared to any other medium i work in.  Which is why it's exciting to me and why I thought I'd share it here.

Anyway without further rambling here are a few complete works,

Liking this a lot not idea how i'll handle colouring tho.

A little looser, might drop this one, unsure.

Probably treat this like demon ladies in terms of colouring.

A lot of these works will be pushed to different degrees of graphical fidelity. I might go deep with the pixel tech into some but more often i'll keep it fast and simple. Speed is very important to me, if I can complete two works in the time it takes me to polish one, i usually will.

Crits on structure, composition, pose, anatomy, expression ect are super welcome. Crits on pixel craft are also good but just keep in mind the rough nature of what i'm doing. Not trying to squirm outta crits just probably not going to go AA heavy or densely shade many images. I probably won't redo images from scratch either unless you catch the work in the design phase, i'de just rather churn out what I have and start a new piece. (though i'll take the crits on board for the next one).

Okay, i'll update as things happen, assuming people care :0

Pixel Art / (WIP) C64 Cutscene
« on: July 09, 2014, 09:21:02 am »
Working on some faux-C64 cutscenes for a freelance project.

(the shot will pan across)

I should probably add some of the other colours in but i'm finding really difficult to introduce them into the picture.  A little at the end of my rope with this one tbh. Help, edits, anything would be really useful. I just need a new perspective or i'll be scrapping it and starting again.

Pixel Art Feature Chest / GR#179 - Temple Tileset - RPG view
« on: March 22, 2014, 10:35:18 am »
Hey Guys,

Working on a temple tile set for a project, i'm taking over from a considerably more talented artist as you can see below but i'm trying my best to keep up.

Mine (so far):
(The walls are rough but mostly work for me. The floor feels thematically confused but the ceiling isn't working at all. Happy with most of the well though)

Would love some suggestions, though I don't have the luxury of time to fully remake anyone given thing except maybe the ceiling. Regardless, any crits would still be very welcome.

Pixel Art Feature Chest / GR#142 - Kill la Kill Ryuko - Sprite Process
« on: October 13, 2013, 08:50:20 am »
Hello forum,

So here is a thing. (edit: added latest version)

>>>
x2
>>>>

So I was hoping to make something in the vain of much superior artist Hunter Russells (Mojry, 1up? http://professionalmanlyguy69.tumblr.com/)

But I feel the posturing of my figure just isn't strong enough. I don't know if I have time to completely rework this but I would love some suggestions all the same.

The character is Ryūko Matoi from studio triggers anime Kill la Kill, a spiritual successor to Gurren Lagann. So um yeah, I understand the outfit is completely insane (see: anime) and I have my issues with the show but I like the characters and was hoping to do the full set.

Here is a reference of Ryūko in her err... battle lingerie.

Suggestions welcome!
